  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi all,

First of all, thanks for all the information and contributions on this forum (Extremly helpful in the acquisition process).

I am actually looking to a 2009 Genesis with almost 70,000 KM. The dealer took some underneath photos and the exhaust system (mainly from the motor to the "junction box") is very rusted (see photo).

The dealer said that it is surface rust and that it is NORMAL for the age of the vehicle (he said even a 2012 will have this rust level).

The car is located in Canada (you know snow and salt do not help for the rust).

I would like to have your opinion and compare it to 2009 and 2010 genesis (or even newer). If you have photos of below you Genesis, it will be appreciated

Thanks in advance for your help!

I don't have photos of underneath any of my 3 vehicles (even my 2006 Sonata I sold in July looked great underneath still), but the car you show looks awful IMO. My 2003 Outback looks almost spotless underneath.

I don't think it is possible to compare with other vehicles outside of you location. Different locations have different requirements and policies regarding use of salt, etc to melt snow. I know that even in places like Denver, they do not use any salt on the streets. And many Genesis owners live in places where it only snows a little or not at all.

I do:p MN = Salt .
Yeah, but how much salt? I guess when the dealer says it is normal, it should be easy to compare that to other vehicles in that same area. Obviously, it is not normal in most places.

I am going to try tonight or tomorrow another 2009. I will make attention to the underneath. Give you a feedback after that.

Other comments / photos / opinions? THANKS!

Got an '04 Chevy truck with less rust than that.
And it's been in salt water.

I'm constantly amazed at what car buyers are considering!!
Why Oh Why - consider anything with rust, damage, and some cars that are definitely overpriced..
There are 1000's of pre owned vehicles out there....... Good Deals are Possible.
Car Salespeople are known story tellers,
Yes it had one careful owner -> really, the 2nd & 3rd owners drove the SH** out of it
Regularly Serviced -> Once when New, and thereafter only when the Engine Light had been on for about 2000miles
They have even been known to put a Bible in the glove box, Oh, Yes, it was driven by a Man of G'd...(once.. at other times it was a getaway car)..
I kno' that most of us have some financial limitations, but come on guys,
Remember the floods & hurricanes -> where are those cars Now?
If you are really considering an ""iffy"" that's your decision. Me I would drop down a segment and get a better vehicle.. There will always be large used vehicles around.be patient... Horror stories abound about people who have
bought OMG's......

I live NW of Ottawa in Canada, where more salt is used on the road than sand.

Looking at the pictures, an 09 with 70K km/42K miles on it, I'd say that underbody looks altogether normal for this climate. It's a long way from brake or fuel lines rusting out!!

Looks like surface rust on some suspension members and the exhaust system shows rust. Big deal, exhaust systems rust. That's why stainless is a selling feature for exhaust systems.

If you like the car, go for it. If you have the bucks, of course go for something newer and better. Lot's of 2012's out there right now.

My two cents ..... RonJ

In the second photo, the thing that has the most rust on it is the lift, not the car. That may be misleading to some who do not look at it closely.

In the second pic it seems like the wheels wells are rusty, same with the lower rear arms. But hell, lightly sand away the surface rust and get some rubberizing spray and coat it.

You're in SoCal. My Texas WRX has no rust anywhere on the car except maybe the rotors and a small spot here or there on the exhaust or random bolts. Meanwhile my gf's WRX, which was built almost a year after mine, has spent it's life further north (New England and VA), and her sway bars are rusted to the point of looking like tree trunks and her 3-piece exhaust (when removed 3 years ago) was fused into one, inseparable piece.

That car looks normal given a northern climate.

Only rust on mine is MY knees, hips and ankles

Atun..

--> Did you purchase the vehicle?

Thanks for all of you for your answers. I haven't bought the car as I continue the negotiation process for this one.

I have tried another 2009 Genesis with the Tech (Lexicon) package, I am waiting the results of the technical examination of the car. I haven't seen underneath the car to compare the Rust level but I will try to do it soon.

The drawback with this one is that the Lexicon-audio-Nav system is not under warranty and I cannot buy a warranty for that (nothing available). As many of you stated, the Lexicon system is less reliable but also less "fixable": you change all the unit and the cost is 3k$ to 4k$.

I continue my search. Your input is valuable, thanks again and have a good day.

If you are that keen on a "G"..why not go further afield.......
100's out there, ONE with your name on it..:D

I took a look under my 09 today and it has small amounts of surface rust but far less than that one. The car has spent its life in Calgary.

Thanks Epiphany for your input, as you, I think that this car is too much "rusted".
