  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

new car purchase dilema 14 vs 15 ?

I would not buy the first model year of anything. That's a rule that has served me very well over the years, and I have regretted breaking it 4 out of 5 times. You can get a left over '13 for peanuts, and there are almost no differences between that and a '14. In 2-3 years the bugs will have been worked out of the new car, the prices will be lower (CPO's will also be available), and you'll be at a good spot in it's life to sell the '13 privately. FWIW.
You would not buy the first model year of anything, yet you've regretted it 4 of 5 times??!! hhhmmmmmmmm........
And you're not going to get a '13 for peanuts...... I promise you, they won't lose money.... that's marketing hype that too many people actually believe.

For the OP, just wait and get the car you want. You'll lose your arse if you try to trade twice in two years.

In nearly 40 years of driving yes, I've broken the "first model year" rule probably 5 times, none recently. Only once has the purchase turned out well as far as cost/resale/problems with the vehicle. In So Cal. right now, there are loaded 2013's advertised for 30-32K. I'm sure there is still another couple thousand in that. 2013 R-Spec's for under 40K. A 2015 is another 10-12K at least.

Since the genesis resale values are abysmal, you can purchase a 2014 New Genesis for $24,000. Never purchase a brand new genesis, you will immediately lose $20,000. This happened to me. 2012 genesis with tech and premium pkg is only valued at $18,000.

Citation, please?

I seriously doubt my 2 month old '13 Genesis Tech is worth just $13k.

So if one purchases a new 2014 Genesis for $24,000, then as soon as it is driven off the lot it is only worth $4,000?

I do agree that buying a new car and selling it within 2 years is financial suicide.

But buying a two year old car has its own pitfalls. Why would someone sell a car after only two years? I would assume that the OE didn't like the car, or the car had some problems.

Just out of curiosity I had my dealer give me a quote on my car, 2013 V6 Tech+Premium 9200 miles. They offered me $26,800..I only paid $30,700 for the car so I don't consider that to be too bad of a deal considering the 14's and 15's are both out now.

I doubt that is a cash price. That price would probably assume you are buying a new car and trading in, and "probably" that you are paying MSRP for the new car.

I had my 2009 Tau in last week for the 60,000 mile service. I grabbed a ride on the shuttle to get breakfast and the shuttle was a practically new 2013 R-Spec. Riding in that car was such deja vu that I knew I didn't want to go with a 2013 or 2014 regardless of the savings.

I ended up getting a COSTCO deal on a loaded 2015. I was a bit disappointed at what I got for my well-kept 2009, but five dealers quoted it at just about the same price. The COSTCO discount really helped.

I ordered an Ultimate Ibeza Blue 3.8. No word yet on the wait, but the 3.8 Ibeza Blue 3.8 comes only fully loaded..

Buying at a huge discount is what hurts the 1G Genesis resale value.

Oddly enough, resale on the 3.8 coupe is pretty good since there is a low supply of those on the used marketplace.

Also what hurts is when Hyundai sells thousands of cars to rental car companies at huge discounts and they unload the cars a couple of years later.
