I am a new coupe owner, some 10 days now, and wanted to introduce myself and let you know a little about me and my car. As I enjoy hearing a little about the poster, and his/her previous cars, I'll start there.
I'm in my early 50's and live in ND - yes, spring is FINALLY here
. My previous car was a 2007 Eclipse SE that has now been passed to my significant-other (horrid phrase). Her ride had been, for years, an early Mazda MX-6 GT (yeah, she be the performance driver, not me). Age of that vehicle triggered a need for a replacement. And so the search began.
All of my previous vehicles had been of the 4-cylinder variety - years ago an Audi Fox, for a brief time an Alfa Spyder, an Altima (yes, family does matter). Nothing with any oomph, but all with decent handling. So a few years ago, when needing a car, I fell in love with the lines of the Eclipse, and bought the SE.
Needless to say, my SO was polite, but eye-rolling did ensue. "Why not the GT??"
So THIS time, the targets were something with some "muscle". I had never owned a Camaro, nor a Mustang, and so my search began there. She and I were at the Auto Show in Denver last spring, and I must admit, the Canary Yellow Camaro that was on display was a knock out. As were the more up-market Audi's, BMW's, etc., but the true eye-catcher, for me, was the Camaro. (For her, it was clearly the blue Shelby.)
So I started there.....and the Camaro is a beautiful car from the outside. Sadly, for me, the infatuation ended when inside the car. Frankly, I felt blind and wrapped in a cocoon, much like a Chrysler 300. Both very nice cars, but not for me.
Driving from that dealer to the Nissan-Honda dealer (I wished to look at the Honda and Nissan coupes) we came across a local show of classic cars. So we stopped, and walked and talked. While there, one of the owner's drove in his "hobby car" - a term I did not know. He had built it from the ground up - a little two-seater no-top (convertible, but with no top ever intended - bet there is a term for that too) that just GROWLED. I will not describe the gut reaction, for I think that all here understand that.
So we move on to the Nissan-Honda dealer, and there in the sun is this Black Hyundai Genesis Coupe.
I am in trouble at this point.
After a 2 hour test drive, and a 2 hour cooling off period where she and I talked finances, who drives what, all that kind of stuff.......
I leased the Genesis Coupe.
This past weekend (Memorial Day) and after 400 miles (a new concept for me....drive for the hell of it) my eyes have been opened. I said above that I had driven "decent handling" cars - while the Alfa was fun, there is no comparison. And the growl of the Coupe, is, to me, amazing.
So there is one partial story of a new Coupe owner. If there is interest, there is more I can say, perhaps a comparison of driving the Eclipse and the Coupe, but I will not bore you further.
JC.
P.S. It is truly amazing what my SO can wring out of that Eclipse, in comparison to me.
