If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I know there might be some bias here but you folks seem to be pretty fair and it looks like many of you did quite a bit of research. My Acura dealer (I own a TL) has a certified pre-owned RL wth Tech package, chrome wheels, painted beak, and about 5500 miles for $39,000 beofre negotiations. It's tempting. But so is the Genesis. This is a big iinvestment fo rme because I don't switch out cars too often. I'm not much for the sales process.

Anybody test the RL? Any thoughts about it vs. the Genesis. Would you take a few moments to explain why if it were your money you'd go with one or the other?

Have any of you been able to negotiate the Genesis down? Also, when I go through Cards Direct, they have 2 packages for the 4.6..option 1 and option 2. Do you know what the differences are?

Thanks in advance.

Well, for a 300 hp RL, your best comparison is against the V6 Genesis, and you can get that for around $34k, so its a $6k premium for used with less warranty, but you do get the lux service department.

If you are looking at the 4.6 V8, you have the base and tech packages, and you are already getting an extra 100 hp over the RL...

Biggest issue for me personally is that the 2010 RL is hideous looking. No way I could have it in my driveway.

RL is SH-AWD? Only advantage if 4WD is needed in your area. Size, features, etc.- my biased opinion is that a 2011 Genesis 3.8 TECH at $39K trumps the Acura.

Did you test drive the RL ? What did you think?

Did you test drive the Genesis ? What did you think?

If you haven't driven both, you need to.

After driving both, you won't need to ask anybody.

I did test drive both. I like them both. As a TL owner I guess I feel secure with the Acura brand. This whole Hyundai thing, as attractive as it is, without sounding like a snob because I'm not, is kind of a siesmic shift in my reality.

I guess I want someone to reassure me that if I go and plunk down $40K on a Hyundai I'm making a good decision. lol

I'm a former TL owner myself. The Genesis as a car seems fairly well done. More solid than my TL for sure; virtually no rattles and squeaks (there is an annoying squeak behind the center console somewhere, but it seems to be ephemeral). The Genesis is quieter, faster, but tends to be a bit floaty and doesn't handle as well as the TL did.

I think the difference will come down to the respective dealers. Hyundai dealers are either really good or really crappy. In terms of service, because Acura is a luxury brand, you will typically get a *lot* better service with much better digs at the Acura dealership. If you can handle the differences in the dealer experience, and the AWD isn't a requirement for you, then I think the Genesis would be the better choice.

If you liked them both the same and you trust the Acura Brand.

I'd get the Acura ! - Slam Dunk!

Well I did a pros and cons list in my head as I was bouncing along in my rough riding TL and have decided to get the...Genesis 4.6 in that nice blue or maybe the Titanium Gray. My commute has gotten longer and I need to have some luxury. The V-8 and the 6 speed swung it for me. A really nice combo. Hope I can get a good deal although I don't kno what a good deal is for one of these. Also, will be trading in an 05 TL with 31,000 miles in excellent condition. The dealership may get me there.

Thanks for your help.

I came out of an 08 TL-S 6MT into a '10 Gen 4.6

best decision i ever made, for luxury brand as Acura they are surely cheaply put together. plus now they are one of the ugliest car lines in America

It was my money and bought the a 2011 Genesis 4.6 over the TL and the RL. The car it replaced was a fully loaded Acura TSX with Nav. The Acura Dealer here in Athens GA was as close to perfect as a dealer can be but the Acura's don't have the power and are not as much fun to drive as the Genesis and the design is bad IMO. By the way we also keep our cars for at least 6 to 12 years depeding on miles driven. The TSX had 239000 miles. I have a 1996 GMC Olympic edition Suburban that I bought after the Altanta Olympic Committee was finished with it. The 1996 Suburban only has 143000 miles on it and may last us another 8 years or so.

Thanks for the support guys. It's amazing how strong branding can be. I've been branded by Acura. YOu both know too then that going from a TL where everything is laid out on a consol an arms length away to the kind of layout a Genesis has is much different. The AWD is kind of seduct ive but I grew up driving rear wheel drive V-8's in Detroit so it shouldn't be that weird to get another now that I'm an older fellow. Speaking of which....and I mean no offense...do you think the Genesis looks..youthful? If you know what I mean.

I am a swap driver fot Acura---I drive all types from dealer to dealer----was thinking of buying one when I drove a Genesis---could not believe how quiet the ride is and how great the sound system is----end of story---I still work for Acura BUT I own a Genesis. It is even with the RL and looks better---good luck with your car

Wow. Strong endorsement. Thanks.

I had a 2006 Acura RL w/Tech Pkg. Although it was a nice vehicle and surprised me in many ways, I got frustrated everytime I needed to use the trunk. For Acura's largest car, it had a very small trunk. It was a chore to get all of our groceries in the trunk and we only shopped for two. The RL was traded for a Lincoln MKX which was traded for the Genesis 4.6. I get more power, better mileage and more comfort with the Genesis. I also have a decent size trunk for groceries and trips. It seems to me that trunks are overlooked these days for the sake of styling. Many of today's trunk opening are small and almost useless (i.e. Cadillac CTS). Acura's are nice vehicles if you can get past the current styling of them. I can't and I don't need all wheel drive either. For me the Genesis is the better choice.

If comfort is very important to you, make sure you drive the Genesis over harsh surfaces. I'm guessing the RL is going to give you a softer, more controlled ride. The Genesis is far more powerful - and that's what I like about it. I also think the Genesis looks nicer.. The interior can go either way - they're both really nice inside. Just make sure you get a good long test drive because some people feel the Genesis rides a little harsh. The Genesis is a luxury sport. The RL is just luxury...

I really wouldn't buy the RL.
Same power output as the current TL, but with dated design and higher price tag. No thanks.

Have you considered the TL SH-AWD?
I test drove(quite extensively) the TL Sh-AWD w/ tech package and 6MT, and I gotta say that the car handles very well for a sedan that size.
Obviously with the less torquey engine, the car feels somewhat slow compared to the Genesis, but I liked the overall driving experience better than the Genesis.
Audio system is superb, manual shifter is smooth and precise.
Rear seat leg room was plenty although not as big as the Genesis.

I would've bought the TL if they were the same price, but with heavy discounts on the Genesis and only $1500 off MSRP on the TL(at that time), I decided to go with the Genesis.

No doubt that the Genesis is a better looking car, but if I were to do it all over again, I'd probably go with the TL.
Not only because of the issues I've had with the Genny, but also just to try out a different car.

Dan
