  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi everyone - This is my second post here on this forum!:grouphug:

I just purchased a 2009 4.6 Tech Package (Pearl w/ brown/black leather combo) with 4Kmi in Kansas and I'm driving it back home to Massachusetts. I'm at a Super8 motel right now somewhere in IL.

I love this car soooooo much. I found it used on autotrader and picked it up for a pretty good price. So far all I've done is some highway driving but can't wait to get on some back roads. Theres tooo much tec in this car and need to read through all the manuals.

One thing I've noticed while driving is that when behind a 18 wheeler there is a lot of draft/shaking going on. Does anyone else experience this when behind larger vehicles?

Anyway, I hope to make it back home by tomorrow night. Lots of driving to do tomorrow!

Welcome. Yeah, it's an easy car to love. That's a long a$$ drive. I have never experienced what you mentioned, but I tend to stay far and clear from all 18 wheelers. If you're light on the throttle, the V8 sips gas on the highway. I was getting 500 miles to a tank, easily on my last long road trip.

Yes it is one long a$$ road trip. The deal was a good one and I'd never done a road trip like this so I figured, "what the hell".

I've ordered the wing badge and wheel caps. I'm contemplating whether or not to order the steering wheel/air bag. I have a feeling I will.

I love knowing that other people paid more for their BMW/Mercedes/etc....:)

Wow that's a hike - but its a great chance to get to know the car! At least the trip will be comfy - the longest I've done so far was 6 hours at a time and it felt like four.

Have fun! This car was made for road trips. The miles just seem to fly by and I think you'll be quite surprised by the highway fuel economy.

Did you buy the car at Mission Hyundai?

No, it was a private sale. Only 3 months old with 3,800 on it. I love this car so much. The brown/orange lether seats are awesome!

Yes, I've experienced that quite a few times, you can feel the car being buffeted by the draft winds. Some others on the forum have noted that the car seems to be generally sensitive to crosswind and I'd tend to agree, although it's not the worst car I've owned in that regard by any stretch. Anyway, I simply take it as a sign that I probably shouldn't be that close to the 18 wheeler anyway and either back off, or pass. Not really a big deal.

Back in January I did a marathon 18 hour drive in the Genesis, from Columbia, SC to Lafayette, LA, and back to just east of Montgomery, AL. I felt amazingly good, even after all that time in the car, it felt like I could make it the other 6 hours back home, but I decided not to risk it, just in case I started getting dreary on some of the long stretches between Montgomery and Atlanta with limited places to stop.

I had a similar experience with long distance driving. Last time I visited my daughter in Atlanta, made the drive home to Connecticut non-stop...about 12-13 hours. We usually stop for the night in Roanoke but this car just eats up the miles so comfortably we went all the way. Never felt like that in any previous car.

Finished up my road trip from Kansas to Massachusetts. I got an average of 26.5 MPG which is damn good. I was using premium gasoline (not sure if that makes a difference).

Right when I walked in the door, I had a package on the kitchen table waiting for me; KDM badges that I ordered before I left!!!

Thats not a "long road trip". That is just a comfortable trip. I've made two "long road trips" so far, and will be making another out to Roswell late this month for three weeks.

As for the wind buffeting when behind an 18 wheeler, ALL CARS GET THIS buffeting when behind 18 wheelers. More so when behind an empty car carrier. My Genesis does very well in cross winds and when behind 18 wheelers. (My FWD Continental does not do as well in cross winds, and we try not to stay behind 18 wheelers as they throw up stones).

Where ya headed to?

I used to drive a 2001 Olds Aurora front wheel drive and never felt buffeting like the kind I get in the Genesis.

Oh, you're only going 200mi longer than my trip. Although I did only go 1 way and not round trip. It ended up being 1550mi for me.

I suspect the "buffeting when driving behind a truck" is caused by the high road clearance of the Hyundai. It sits high over the road to begin with, and when you have 17" or 18" tires, that does nothing good for stability in cross wind situations.

I suspect your prior car stood lower to the ground, and that they may have had 15" wheels. (My Avalon was like that). That contrast may be why the new car seems to handle worse in those situations.
