If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hey All,

I just test drove a late model 2013 (that they would't let me buy as it had just been sold to a dealer in another city) and I noticed the buttons around the tech package DIS knob had been redesigned (3 new buttons where back button was) and the entire DIS system was updated.

I asked if it was a 2014 and they insisted it wasn't. I ended up getting an early model 2013 RSpec and it was the same that was in my 2011.

Is anybody familiar with this? The entire DIS and nav system looked more ascetically pleasing and I was wondering if an update to this is possible.

All 2013's and over that have technology package has that setup. Are you sure you have a 2013? That's odd that you wouldn't have this setup.

That's what the invoice says. The sticker on the door says it was built on September 12, 2012.

I think that would make it a 2013, yes?

Still old nav though... I was kinda disappointed it hadn't been updated.

If you notice on the fascia of the 6-disk changer, control buttons for the track reverse and forward are on there as well.

Yeah, I don't have any of these. So, is there a chance the dealer lied to me about the model year?

Is there somewhere I can check the VIN to be sure?

I'm fairly sure that all '13 models have the revised DIS and audio system controls. I don't know of a spot to check your VIN, but usually when you enter a VIN in for an insurance quote and it will pull the data, to include the model year, for the vehicle.

I found this on Edmunds about model years:

Position 10 indicates the model year. The letters from B-Y correspond to the model years 1981-2000. There is no I, O, Q, U or Z. From 2001-'09, the numbers one through nine were used in place of numbers. The alphabet started over from A in 2010 and will continue until 2030.
Is it confusing? Yes. So here's a list of the model years since 1981: B=1981, C='82, D='83, E='84, F='85, G='86, H='87, J='88, K='89, L='90, M='91, N='92, P='93, R='94, S='95, T='96, V='97, W='98, X='99, Y=2000, 1='01, 2='02, 3='03, 4='04, 5='05, 6='06, 7='07, 8='08, 9='09, A=2010, B='11, C='12, D='13, E='14, F='15,G='16, H='17, J='18

Well, according to a vin check site it does pull up as a 2013. I'll have to ensure the number on the invoice matches that of the frame, because I wouldn't put it past this dealership to alter or swap vins.

That being said, I have the older system. Any chance I can do an after market upgrade? Where would I start?

What does your Owner's Manual say?

What does your Owner's Manual say?

Specifically of the DIS or the model year?

The car was a demo and the manual was missing. My sales guy "stole one" from another vehicle and he handed me a 2012. I asked for a 2013 and he brought me one. Prior to this, I wanted to make double sure. I mentioned to the sales about the difference in infotainment and they said the one I test drove must have been a late model 2013. I did have the DIS manual, however. Does that indicate year somewhere?

I'm going to raise hell if they mislead me. Should be a pretty easy fix considering I'm sure they'd be committing fraud.

Since it was a demo, and the owners manual was missing, forget about that idea. Check the VIN according to instructions in post above.

Regarding fraud, it has to be in writing that the car is represented as a 2013 (and if it were really a 2012). Verbal statements regarding sales contracts over $500 are not enforceable.

It was absolutely represented as a 2013 in writing. The VIN also checked out as a 2013, but I'm going to check what the vin engraved on the frame indicates as it's easy to switch the vin from other parts of the car.

Not even a car salesman would tamper with the VIN, since that would be a crime. It is possible that the new DIS was not quite ready, and your early 2013 got the 2012 one at the factory. Hyundai has been known to make line changes in the middle of a model year.

You'd be interested to note that my 2011 that I bought from the same dealership, the sales manager was talking about swapping the vin from the car I bought to one in the show room after I demanded a replacement since the one I bought needed an engine replacement. This would allow them to sell the one I bought as new vs. them taking it back and having to sell it used. In the end I kept mine and they replaced the engine.

That being said, I checked the frame number and it matched the VIN.

I agree that this is just an early model and I had bad luck.

So again, is it possible for me to upgrade this?

Maybe you are making too much of the difference. I would just forget about it before it drives you crazy.

for whatever it is worth, mine was built 11/29/12

It has the 3 buttons.

the back button is the lower left button.

Since this was the only Genesis I had driven with the knob (all the others were base rentals) I wasn't aware that there was a different knob button configuration.

If Johnboy2k10 commits suicide, it's your fault.

Hahaha...

I guess I just want what I don't have. Mine was built in September so, several months before kf4zra's.

I think I'll just live with it. I just hate the nav system. It was the biggest complaint I had with my 2011. Mostly useless.

You know what this all means? It is probably an easy plug-and-play upgrade from the 2012 and earlier DIS to the 2013 DIS. It is just a matter of figuring out which parts and swapping them in. At a minimum, it would be the knob controller and the optical drive. Maybe the screen too, if the main computer guts are part of the screen component. It wouldn't be cheap, but it might be a very nice upgrade for the subtle differences.

I agree. I just got the April 2012 nav map upgrade (my 2012 was delivered with an older version) and I still am unable to input addresses that were current over six years ago.

Fortunately in Phoenix the roads and addresses are easy to navigate and I have lived here a long time but I no longer even try to use the nav except to display major arterials as I approach (particularly at night since some of the signs are difficult to read).

If I ever get another nav system it will be a portable Garmin. Much better system and far easier to use. Only drawback is the display is somewhat smaller.
