  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

New tire width on 5.0's with free tire swap

Thank You Midnightsun for the side by side pictures. I knew I wasn't going nuts. :D Let me know how your flat spotting is. I think the Contis are much worse than the Hankooks which I thought was why we got the new tires in the first place according to the letter we received from Hyundai.

This is not going good at all. I had the new Conti replacements "Road Force" balanced and the out come was 1 rear tire was not in spec and could not be balanced. They said it was defective and had a flat spot? They put it back on the car with no weights whatsoever and plastered with residue from all the weights the put on and removed. I took the wheel off yesterday and scraped al the crap off ready for a new balancing as I do not trust this place and am heading to my son in laws garage where he has a pretty sophisticated machine. Does mostly high end cars. We will see what his machine says before claiming a warranty replacement tire through the dealership.

Has anyone had a tire store, besides Discount Tire, swap the Hankook's for an upgraded tire besides the one being offered by Hyundai?

That sucks, but all these vibration issues really makes you wonder about tire manufacturing quality control in this era of cost reduction of everything!

Do not take for granted a balancing machine is calibrated. I have seen this way to often as of late. Went to my son in laws just now. Put the rear apparently defective flat spotted tire on the machine. 1.25 grams on the outside and 1 gram on the inside and balanced out to 0. Watched it spin all around and smooth as it gets, go figure.

Easy to see why so many issues are hard to diagnose - the equipment used may be as much of an issue as the problem you're trying to fix!

No kidding, 2 tire shops I have been to in the last few years have had bad balancing machines. Almost wonder what goes on. You pay for a service yet the machines are not maintained properly. Same goes with lug nut air guns and pressure reading instruments. Loose lug nuts and wrong pressure in tires.

I had an issue with Discount Tire and balancing on another vehicle a couple of years ago. On my 3rd trip back, the technician said he was going to balance the tire without "Smart Balance". I learned that Smart Balance somehow reduces the overall amount of weight required to balance tires. When he removed smart balance and rebalanced the tires, the problem was solved. I now always specify that they should not use smart balance. I am not sure if they use it by default now or not.

Thanks again for taking the time to measure the tires Midnightsun. How did you make out with your issues noted above? Any flat spotting with the Contis?

Did you go with the ProContact TX or with the ExtremeContact DWS 06?

Hyundai dealer gave me the Pro Contact TX. Quite pleased with them so far.

That's great to hear. The dealers here in TX are doing the same tire on the swap.

I've done a bit of research and have found that the Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 looks better than the ProContact TX in a few categories.

Does anyone have any experience with the EC DWS 06?
