  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey guys. So, I took my kids through the automatic car wash today (they love it!) in my '09 4.6 Genesis. As we entered onto the conveyor, I immediately start responding to work emails ,via iPad, that needed responding to. Neigh did I realize, until it was too late, that I had left my automatic windshield wipers in the 'on' position. Needless to say that upon exit of said car wash my wipers no longer worked .. I imagine them straining beyond their limited capacity under the weight of the blue scrubby spaghetti brushes, until they no longer could fight the overwhelming onslaught and some component gave up. They now come about a third of the way up and stop. I then have to manually push them down, out of my direct field of view.
What do you guys think I screwed up? Stripped a gear? Fried the motor? Is it a repair I can do with my limited mechanical know how? Should I get a pro???!
Any advice is appreciated. Hopefully, I am posting in the right place. Cheers.

There was a recent recall on some windshield wiper motors. May be coincidence that yours broke while going through car wash. Someone posted a link to the recall. Check to see if your car is on the recall list.
Here it is: http://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/showthread.php?t=18664

This is for 2012 model years only, OP said he has a 2009 so no dice there :(

First thing I would try, remove both wiper arms, turn wipers on and then off so the motors settle in the rest position. Reattach wiper arms in their rest position, try again. Could have stripped the teeth a bit and moved where the arms sit on the motor nubs. If that doesn't solve your problem, it sounds like the motor itself might be in need of replacement.

Just an update guys.It was the motor that went bad. The cog in there is made of plastic and the wipers strain against the blue scrubbing monsters caused the cog to strip all of the teeth off on one side. Luckily, I have a friend that is a genius with electric motors, he owns a shop where he builds alternators from scratch for the oil field. My buddy took the motor apart and flipped the cog to where the side still with teeth faced the gears and low an behold, it friggin works!!! Yay! Problem solved. I doubt, that had I brought it in to the dealership, they could have repaired it like that. I am sure that they would have just swapped the motor with a new one. Instead of paying $500 plus dollars, it cost me a six pack and a future favor.

If it breaks again take it to the dealer for the free replacement. If you are eligible you should have gotten a letter from Hyundai in the mail recently.

Hyundai recently sent out a letter saying that warranty on the wiper motors were extended to 10 years - 100K miles. It was NOT an official recall, just a warranty change. I don't remember all the model years included, but the 2009 was definitely covered.

It's a nice gesture from the manufacturer because recalls are only required on safety items, so they're just like "Look, we messed up, if this thing doesn't last 100k miles, we'll do it for free". BMW/MINI did that for the HPFP on the Turbo Cooper S motor because it was such a huge issue. They warrantied it to 110k miles, mine started failing at 111k miles..... and trust me, as poor as their service department had treated me in the past, they certainly were not going to honor such a large job a single mile past warranty.

They can shove this "nice gesture" where sun doesn't shine. Wipers ARE safety item and should be recalled regardless of the mileage/age, especially when there is a known issue with a known fix.

I had to take the car in twice for the free fix because the first time they "fixed' it nothing had changed and the wipers still didn't work lol. But yeah at least it was covered..

Agreed, they are a safety item. Not sure if they need to be recalled, but at least they have extended the warranty.

More HTSA complaints are raised - more chances for a recall or a recall range extension. I raise one on every problem with any car I have that I consider safety issue. Takes 5-10 minutes to do.

Hi, I have the same Genesis as yours and the same wiper problem. I am considering DIY it. How difficult is it to replace wiper motor starting to remove cowling? How long did it take to replace the motor and complete the job, except for disassembling the motor itself and fixing it?
