  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Non-Linear Acceleration with the 4.6

You'll also notice the traction control retarding acceleration at the earliest hint of wheelspin. It's way way *way* conservative. I normally drive with it 'off' as it never really is off, it's just less intrusive. Wish you could set it to DEFAULT to off or find a way to turn it *all the way off*. The Gen handles so gently I'm not worried about it getting bent out of shape as I would be, say, a modded 350z which will easily swap ends if you overcook it. Frankly it's not really that kinda car anyway. It'd just be nice not to have the intrusion!

I don't think it's just the traction control tho as sometimes I've noticed it runs like a scalded b*tch and sometimes it's just lukewarm. Not sure if it's gas related as it seems to be temp independent. As another poster noted, it HAS gotten better once I played with the tiptronic a bit.

A funny possible solution, but you could throw it into Tiptronic mode and start in 2nd gear from a stop. Funny, it's still got plenty of torque to give even at a stop in 2nd gear :D Not too much where a smooth start isn't possible though.

just had my 4.6 in for body work. Battery was disconnected for weeks every thing but trip was saved

Apologies for bumping an old thread but what I've found is that the car is VERY sensitive to gas quality! Not sure if it's the additives or what, but Valero branded premium basically makes the car have surge/hesitation issues. Exxon? No issues whatsoever. The thing screams as I'd expect it to. Not a torque monster the way my CLS is but very sweet in it's own right. I just wish the engine management were a bit less 'intrusive'. At times it seems to be choking off WAY more than just a few HP.

I've noticed two things that have been mentioned here. The first is the lurch from a stop. It's very difficult to regulate the throttle from a stop so that I don't surge forward. The second is a noticeable slow down when shifting. It's like the shift is taking too long to happen, and when it finally does I'm at too low an RPM to continue the fantastic acceleration. I have to wait until the revs are up a little to surge forward.

fully agree, I made the mistake of filling up with Kwik Trip 91 once, I will never do that again, it felt like 2 cylinders were lopped off.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Hi guys,

I too know what you are talking about with the acceloration. I have the 4.6 and performance wise, that was the only thing that I was really disgusted with. So I ordered a little electronic device called "Sprint Booster". It is great. Does exactly what it says it does. No more lag in acceloration, period. And at the push of a button, you can have full performance, partial performance, or turn it off and have all your lag back. (no pun intended). Google it and read the reviews. No More Lag. It's a bit expensive at $329, but worth it to me. There is a shop here in Atlanta that emailed me that he could get it for me for $299, but I got the email after I had already ordered it. But it was ok, for $329 free shipping and no tax. Let me know your thoughts.

One thing I have not seen mentioned here, for cars that "seem" to start out slower, then all of a sudden, picks up and goes like h.ll.

In my younger days, we used to say that the car got up on the cam. With todays Genesis, the valves are Variable Valve Timing, on both the Intake and Exaust. This VVT will make a car start out one way, then once the RPM's get to a higher point, the VVT kicks in and the car takes off.

This is my opinion as well. It feels almost like a VTEC on my old S2000.

I agree. I have the lag when I accelerate from a stop but then when I'm on the freeway, it just takes off.

Exactly. Highway is where the V8 truly shines. :)

Recently brought my 2009 4.6 in to fix rattle( glove box door) While there they reprogrammed the ECU (factory mandated upgrade/fix). The non linear/stuttering acceleration that has annoyed me for quite some time and which I attributed to secondary port throttles sticking or the electronic nanny interfering is, thankfully, gone. A revelation really. Smooth as silk now. Love this machine. Drive the hills between Malibu and Westlake Village regularly and find the handling more than adequate. This is a very, very composed automobile. Responds very well to being hustled quite hard. Needs adjustable shocks and is a bit oversprung but 5 way Tokicos will take care of that. Overall, love it.

Do you know the service bulliton # for the ECU programming? If you could enlighten me, regarding aftermarket suspensoin, brakes, full exgaust ect. that are designed for our 4.6 sedans let me know. I have been in theads and only read about customized installs very expensive.

Thanks

orthoman---don't know the fix #. they told me the factory had mandated an ecu reprogramming fix and found, after the "fix" that aceleration was much smoother without the on/off character as before. ---westlakegreg

Thanks,
Just had my Gen serviced they told me they did son ECU upgrade I don't see any diffrence in acceleration possibly worse since my programing of more agressive driving than I do now was lost:mad:

Myself I think the problem is more related to the drive by wire system not being able to interpret the pedal pressure properly thus giving the throttle control the wrong position/acceleration information.

This stopped after my exhaust was installed

IT WORKS !!!!!! Just had my car in to have the tire monitors reset (lost signal after heavy rain) and they told me that I needed a ECU update titled "Driveability Recall", at the same time they told me I was eligible for a FREE Nav pkg update. It all took about 4 hours and they gave me a free loaner car! I noticed right out of the dealership that the non-linear problem was gone! It felt like a BMW 5 series! Not sure how gas mileage will be impacted (if at all). As for the nav update I can't notice anything different except that changing screens seems to take just a little longer (maybe there's alot more data to sort thru, who knows). So far I am very very happy with the smoooooth acceleration around town!

ps I think the update was: 10HYZ13 or DTC P0456 (10-01-025), thats all that is on the printout rcpt.

If you start out in 2nd gear it will solve your problem. "D" is for when you have a coffee in your hand... or a girl in your lap. I feel sorry for you younger guys that never grew up with the joys of a "stick shift".

I've been driving my 2010 4.6 now for 7 months and I have noticed the same thing. The engine more than makes up for it in the 3000 to 4000 rpm range. That being said, I have never owned a car with a perfect engine. This car is so technically advanced that it's a wonder that there aren't more quirks. Hyundai must have really put there hearts into this Automobile and I only wish that our domestic auto makers were the same.
