Oil Cap Issue - How easy is the oil filter assembly to replace?

Hello,

First service on my 2015 Genesis Sedan 3.8 did not go well. I must have gotten the O'ring stuck when I put the cap and new filter back, plus I clearly overtightened it.

When I fired up the engine to let it run, I noticed a fair bit of oil dripping from the oil cap spout, so clearly it's not sealed.

I threw everything I could at it, but I cant get that oil cap to come off.


That said, the oil filter assembly looks really easy to replace. Thoughts?

I've got the 5.0 so a different placement, but the cap looks the same. A rubber strap wrench seems to work well for me. The first oil change I did was the toughest time I had. Someone had over tightened the cap but I was able to get it off with the strap wrench. Degrease the cap before attempting or the strap will just slide.

Seems pretty easy to replace the part nevertheless or at least maybe the cap if I can get it off.

Those are the ones. It may be that the filter pliers were distorting the plastic since the pressure is applied to each side instead of equally around the cup. If so, it could have caused the threads to bind making it even harder to unscrew. I'd give a strap wrench a try before going to the expense and trouble of replacing the entire assembly.

Failing that, you might try drilling a hole from one side of the plastic (through the filter) and out the other side, then use a long screwdriver to unscrew it. Just drill close to the end of the cap to avoid any internals. You're probably going to need a new cap anyway.
