  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I asked my dealer what they charge for an oil & filter change...They said $39 with multi-grade oil and $89 with synthetic (plus tax)...

A $50.00 premium for synthetic oil??...Holy cow!! Always a DIY'er at heart, I was born at night, but not last night!

So am I being unreasonable or just a tightwad??

Thanks for ALL feedback!

If you want synthetic oil buy it at Walmart and take it to Jiffy Lube they will put your oil in if you request it.

I purchase Mobil 1 for $22.00 at Wal-Mart bring it to my dealer with my filter and he charges me $9.75.

I'd say $25 for regular oil, $40 for synth, since that is about what it would cost you and you don't have to do it yourself. My dealership wants $48 for a synth blend and the car for an hour or two, so I just buy my own oil and change it myself at my convenience. Oil changes on the Genesis (V6 at least) are really simple.

I'd say that's about right, my dealer charges $26.95 for regular and $42.95 for synth, so I've mostly had them change it because I getting lazy in my middle age. They also regularly send me $5 off coupons for small services like oil changes (just about the only thing I ever get done).

I do it myself so $100 oil change sounds crazy to me. But if I was busy and didn't know what I was doing or didn't have the tools or inclination to get under a car, it seems reasonable considering what other dealers would charge.
Here are your options...
1. DO it yourself
2. Get oil and give it to dealer (they may balk at this).
3. Get Genesis filter and gaskets and take it to Jiffy Lube or any similar place.

I want synthetic oil so I buy my own oil and go to the dealership. He provides the filter and a car wash. $20.00 later I've got my car back.

Mine was $39 for parts, $15.50 for labor and $3.82 for taxes for a grand total of $58.32 for regular oil at the dealer.

How much of a PITA is it to change the oil in a 4.6 yourself? I'd like to change my car's oil myself.

search this forum under V8 oil changes, but you are gonna need a 27mm socket and a 1/2 inch ratchet to get the oil filter off. Also you're gonna need a hex key, not sure of the size. The oil takes forever to drain out of the pan, and you have to jack the drivers side only at the end to get all the residual out.
I found this thread to be helpful. Keep in mind some of the info is wrong and was corrected, so read the thread completely.

right price is free.. My dealer provides free oil changes for life of car as part of purchase.. I haven't always used it (oil needs to be changed even when I am away from home)...

How is everybody keeping track of their oil changes when you do it yourself? This is so there isn't a problem at a later time with warranty issues.
