In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Ok,so I have had to put in 2 quarts of oil in the past month.I do notice a bit of smoke when I step on gas to merge onto highway or pass another vehicle.Car still idles smoothly no other problems as of yet...Will my MPP warranty cover any of work it may need to replace piston rings?
Has anybody had work done on they're car with an extended warranty covering it...

The year and build date posted would net better results to your inquiries.

if you have a early 2012 r-spec you probably have a problem. i had to have my piston rings replaced and had oil consumption issues. it was covered under warranty and drives great. albeit my car was in the shop for a month.

Please post model year, build date (label in drivers door jamb), and mileage, and whether you purchased new or used. If purchased used, was it a CPO? If you have an extended warranty, is it an HPP Platinum? (not sure what MPP is).

Has the only consumption issue gone away since having the piston rings replaced?

Mine has gone about 1000 miles since last oil change and the oil is full. I'll check it again in a couple weeks to see if any oil is lost.

Some 5.0 engines with build dates earlier than March 2012 exhibit the excessive oil burn problem. The problem (and path to solution) is very well documented on this forum.

Mine was built early March 2012 so it's close, but I"ll be watching it and checking the oil. So far there have been no signs of oil consumption.

yes my problem has been resolved, car runs excellent

I've driven about 1000 miles since purchasing my Genesis, and checked the oil today and it was about an eighth of an inch below the F mark, so that appears to be possibly a small amount of oil missing, is that enough to be concerned? I"m at about 45,800 and the sticker from the last oil change says it's due at 52,000+ miles.

That is the kind of oil consumption to die for! No concern whatsoever. Put some Mobil 1 synthetic in, and you'll probably have near zero consumption.

I think 500 miles per quart is widely considered by the "experts" as being OK, but I would scream, if that were the case with my engine - my 5.0 V8 uses next to zero as far as I can see.

I hope you're right. The previous owner had it three years on a lease, there is nothing in the (such as way too frequent oil changes as someone posted on a Genesis they were looking at) Carfax report to indicate any issues or concerns. I haven't seen or heard any symptoms, or knocking or ticking in the engine, etc. But in reading about this issue I want to be pro-active in watching for it, and not wait until the oil light comes on. I've seen posts here by others that the oil light came on and they were 4 quart low.

Everything else about the car has been great...no issues and hoping not this issue either.

I checked the oil today and it's right after the F, like it was last time. So over the last about 1500 miles, three checks saw it slightly above first time, right at the F last two, so that suggests no oil consumption problem but I"ll watch over the next few thousand miles before the next oil change. The oil was changed by the dealer a few weeks before I bought this car, and they recommend 5 W 20 oil and a quality brand of synthetic, and they said they actually used Mobil 1.

Everything about this car has been great and it's easily the best car I've owned.

I purchased a pristine 2012 with 41,000, discovered this oil consumption issue myself through regular maintenance. Complained to the dealer and now I am getting my oil checked by the dealer every 1,000 miles for 4 checks. So far I have been down a half QT at each 1,000 miles for 2 of the 4 checks. Has anyone gone through this "oil consumption program" and should I prepare to get smoke blown up my A$$ at the end of this program. Had I done my research, I likely would have chosen a 2013 or above... GRRR! Thank you!

Just about every car maker consider a quart in 1000 miles OK. You are half that. While you may not like it, I think is is pretty normal. Here is what BMW says
Oil consumption is normal on all engines,” BMW spokesman Hector Arellano-Belloc said in an e-mailed statement. “BMW vehicles have long intervals between oil changes (10,000 miles). BMW engines (excluding the BMW M) may consume up to one quart of engine oil per 750 miles under certain driving conditions.”Jun 30, 2015

I don't agree that it is normal, but I do agree it is normal for automobile manufacturers to try and weasel out of their warranty.

The last two cars I have owned, have never used any noticeable oil (using dipstick check). I have to go back 20 years for a car that I owned that used any oil between changes, but I didn't use synthetic oil back then.

What type of cars were they, Mark? Just curious. Modern engines have been shown to burn oil (I want to say "by design", but I'd say it's more accurate to say as a result of the design). It's especially noticeable with the long intervals we can now get away with, with modern engine and lubrication technology. Going 5000-10000 between oil changes(or 14k like my mini recommended that i honestly didn't follow), is going to make this even more noticeable. Higher compression, faster spinning engines and especially on DI engines for some reason, all lead to it. 1-2 quarts between oil changes should be expected on modern engines that go 5-10k between changes.

What type of cars were they, Mark?
  • 1998 Toyota Camry 3.0L V6 - 88K miles
  • 2009 Genesis Sedan 3.8L V6 - 64K miles
No oil usage between oil changes was ever noticeable on the dip stick. I used Mobil 1 5W-30 about 95% of the time (at first oil change), and a few times some other name-brand synthetic (Castrol, Pennzoil. etc). Normal oil change interval was about every 6K miles, most of which I did myself.

I'm actually impressed that your 09 3.8 doesn't seem to consume any in 6k miles. I've noticed it a lot in modern engines. Though, I've noticed it a lot more in DI engines. Changing oil at 7500 miles each time, I noticed I needed to add 1 quarter about 2/3 of the way through the interval on my Mini Cooper S

Most car MFR's have gone through the "low friction piston rings caused excessive oil burn" issues in the 2010-2015 years, and have learned their lessons. Hyundai's "lesson" lasted about 9 months with the 5.0's in during MY2012. I bought my '12 4.6 to avoid the 5.0's oil burn problem, and at 70k miles it still doesn't burn a drop between oil changes. :spoton:

Mini cooper = BMW so some oil burn is expected. :sorry:

Yep. I do miss my OLD BMW's. Reliable as they come... as long as you don't drive yourself nuts chasing Power Steering leaks forever(that you will never ever ever completely fix). lol The 80's made for some damn impressive BMW's. All downhill on reliability from there.
