  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Has anybody pulled the trigger and installed the ONSTAR FMV (For My Vehicle) in a Genesis? The 2012 Genesis appears to be compatible. We have in our Envoy XUV, so we are considering it for the Genny...

Ah, ya gotta love the forums. I believe I did not ask whether or not it (OnStar) is of value to you; I asked if you have installed it on your Genesis.

BlueLink? Yea, I heard something about it...thanks for the info. We were looking at the OnStar FMV because, well, we're familiar and like OnStar.... thx!

but like OnStar, there's always "The Dark Side" (and I'm not talking about putting a car tire on a motorcycle):

But it appears that it's not available for the 2012 Genesis!

(I apologize for the duplicate reply (above). I am still in 'learning' mode on this forum. Moderator please delete one of them.... mea culpa. )

It also appears that BlueLink is, at least for the rollout, based on cellular coverage for location triangulation etc with no GPS involved, while OnStar uses cellular and gps-based navigation... is that correct?

Hi QuantamRift - I do some digital work for OnStar and since your 2012 Genesis has not been validated yet, the best bet would be to take it to an FMV installer and they will be able to tell you. Also, if you hadn't heard, the FMV mirror is available for a special price right now. There are more details on it here www.onstarconnections.com Let me know if you have any other questions! - Lisa

An installer knows more than users. Huh, never seen that before.

Nice try. Bring on the real facts and then we'll consider it as consumers.

The biggest problem I see is that you lose your home-link, since these are located on the mirror. You will also lose the compass that is also built into the mirror. You also get a few black boxes glued to your windshield.

Outside of that, I have Onstar in my Corvette. I never used it, but thought it was worth it. However, what you get from FMV is not the same. The only thing you are getting are the emergency features. You do not get the ability for Onstar to open the car doors or start the car, yet you are still paying $199/yr. You can also get the directions features, but that will cost you $249/yr. Of course, most of us have a nav system.

Thx.
