  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Open Letter to Genesis Motors - How I'd Improve the GV80

The ability to re-arrange your pre-set radio stations as you want rather than them only being in the order you added them and not able to change that order.
On my 2021 Prestige, pushing on the right side of a radio station's display in the list (where it often has the "* REC" text) - and holding it for a few seconds - triggers "^" and "v" arrows - while still holding it I can drag it up or down to change the order. I don't recall if that is in the owner's manual or not, it just seemed like a likely method to select-and-drag them. Several controls operate that way: a quick push engages the primary function, push-and-hold for a second or two engages some other function.

I'd like my AC vented seats to remain on if they were on when the car was shut off. chances are, if I had them on when I exited, I'd like them on when I get in.

  • Keys should map to a user profile so user preferences are loaded on approach. (May be under a patent restriction by BMW).
  • Driver's side seat memory buttons are confusing if user profiles also control the seat
  • Prestige Passenger seat needs ergo motion options
  • Prestige Passenger seat needs leg extension and speed adjusted bolster system
  • Radio system does not let you completely disable SiriusXM and without help you get peppered by a notification on startup.
  • Nav system is clunky, search is terrible, over complicated and 9 times out of ten I rely on Apple Carplay with Maps or Google Maps instead.
  • User profile seat memory is frequently interrupted by other tasks at startup, resulting in the seat adjusting to an incomplete state.
  • Radio system remembers the wrong previous station on startup, so the station shown onscreen does not match the one actually playing.
  • Rear passenger climate controls are confusing when operated from the front.
  • Let me turn off the automatic stop/start as a system preference so I don't have to do it every time on startup.
  • Dealer support for the "Genesis Experience" has been ebysmal. Luther Automotive Group is trying to stay on brand with both Hyundai and Genesis out of one box and really flubbing it. Service advisors don't call back, scheduling is a headache, and the availability of comparable loaners has been minimal. I understand the desire to do things exactly as described in the tech manuals, but I am also trying to improve the product by bringing issues with software or operation to light, and not getting very far. Dealer personell have been cordial, but the dealer itself just isn't offering the support to customers the "Genesis Experience" sold us on. Put more dealers in the support network, please!!!
  • Over the air updates should be deferrable or let me set a safe schedule (ie like Windows updates can be run off hours so they don't interrupt me). Fortunately they don't kick in while the vehicle is operating, but when I cancel it, I have no idea when the update dialog is coming back.
  • Let me turn off HD radio album art. Most of the time it is wildly inaccurate and just litters the UI with visual noise.
  • Tocuhscreen response for fan speed is weird. Auto doesn't easily flip to a numeric setting. Worse, the vehicle prefers the Auto setting on startup, which "Low" equates to about speed 5, which is noisy.
  • It would be awesome if Genesis found a way to make the higher fan speeds quieter in the cabin.
  • Offer floating center caps. Sounds silly but actually adds a little to the appearance.
  • Please fix the weird behavior with mirror position on startup. I've tried reporting this to both Genesis and the dealer and no one can confirm it. Frequently, when I start the vehicle and switch to my user profile, the drivers side mirror points straight down and only partially readjusts when I finish backing out of the driveway. This means more often than not, I need to readjust my mirrors to ensure I have the correct visibility around the car.
  • Speed up the system startup time. It is painfully slow when I hop in and want to switch users. I get the impression the built in modem is waiting for data before letting me switch. It is extremely irritating and my spouse being impatient, starts driving before it has finished.
  • Don't commit seat position adjustments to memory per user profile unless I press the SET button on the door or display.
  • Fix the physical feeling of the visors. Stupid, I know, but they feel comparably cheap to everything else within the cabin.
  • Make the storage area under the center console taller if possible.
  • Add heated/chilled cupholders (or optional).
  • Fix the behavior of the parking sensors when stopped at an intersection. They randomly ding when sunlight directly obstructs a camera, when another vehicle's backup sensors are at the same height, or under other unknown circumstances.
  • Add sensor tolerance for wheels so I don't accidentally cause curb rash. This has been especially frustrating when I enter a carwash or enter a drive thru.
  • Remember last used settings for heated seats, steering wheel, and ventilation choices.
  • Add more legroom to the GV80's rear passenger seats.
  • Recalibrate suspension to be softer ride when not in Sport mode as has been offered by other hardware overrides.

Some of your suggestions are good, others may be out of the control of Genesis.
The start/stop system must default to the active position at startup. That is an EPA regulation.
The SiriusXM can be shut down. Others here have done it. You may want to search for that.

Others are costly. How much are you willing to pay for the passenger seat to massage, the heated and cooled cup holders and the major redesign to add legroom to the back seat?

I had no idea. Good to know.

Ooh also helpful info.

If I were in a position to upgrade to a newer model, I would be interested in these features.

The passenger seat changes woud be worth their weight in upgrades. Sounds silly but my spouse and I envy each other when driving just because of the drivers seat features.

The cupholder idea is just a suggestion since other luxury lines offer it.

Dealer experience is high on the list, I bought my GV80 from Rick Case Hyundai in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Had a rattle from day one, took it back immediately and they told me they could look at it in 3 months!!! I spoke to the General Manager who told me face to face that they should never have started selling Genesis from Hyundai dealerships, they should have waited until they had their own dealership, which didn't help me at all. I bought this car for my wife who can't use the phone charger for her Apple iPhone, which makes her dislike the car. Include a spare tire, good grief, this feels like deception (I have heard from several other Genesis owners who got surprised with a flat and no spare), no one informed us that it would not have a spare and quite honestly, who thinks to ask about that when selecting a car!!! I feel like I paid $85K for a GV80 but the service is what you get for a $20K Hyundai!

I get great service from my combo dealer, but from what I have read, I think most get much better service on a $20,000 Hyundai they they have gotten on their Genesis. Such a shame.

The charger is an issue. I have an Android and it does charge, but if I am using google maps, it charges real slow. I would think they would have had that fixed by now in the newer models.

As far as a spare tire. My wifes 2017 BMW and my 2017 Acura did not have spare tires either. The BMW had run flats and the Acura had the worthless patch can and pump. I purchased a spare kit for the Acura. Then when I got my Audi, I made sure it had a Spare and when I got my Genesis, I made sure it had a spare which mine did. I am not sure what the formula for getting the spare in a GV80 is, but my 2021 Prestige had one.
But to be honest, I have not had to change a tire because of a flat in many years. But I still want one.

You need to add spare tire to the list of things to check when you get a new car these days. It is very common to not have a spare.

How did your Prestige have a spare? Did the dealer include a donut for you? Theres a space beneath the cargo mat for one but it doesn't appear to offer room for a full size match.

Mine came with the car from the factory. Back in the early years of this model, you usually got a spare if you did not have the third row seating. I could never figure out what their formula was for not getting a spare, but I know one of the factors was the third row seating. Maybe in the newer models they eliminated it for all cars, but I am not sure.
I do know that there are third party companies that will sell you a spare and jack for this car. But, if you have a third row, I don't know if that is a deal breaker. Do a search on this forum, as it has been discussed before and people have supplied links to where they got them.
But probably some one will read your post and help you better than me.
Good luck.

EDIT*** I am pretty sure it is a donut and not a full size one.

He is correct about Hyundai dealers selling the Genesis, but he did not tell you the whole story. Genesis wanted to open a network of 100 dealers back about 2015 or 2016 but the Hyundai dealers, like him, sued and prevented it. Took a long time to finally start some stand alone dealers.

That aside, if Rick Case knew he would be selling the cars he should have expanded the service and hired more techs. If he could find them, that is another problem in the industry. Not enough people to work on cars.

Can't help with the charger. There have been other posts about making it work. Can always plug it in.

I know what you mean about the spare. About a third of cars today do not have one and that includes many high priced cars. It saves about 50 pounds and auto makers are looking for every ounce for the EPA mileage ratings. It is going on 12 years since I needed a spare, but I still want one. I had a slit sidewall and not kit would help.

Based on specs from Genesis, the after market companies that sell spares are not the exact size. Do not know if that makes a difference as you should be doing minimal driving on a donut before replacing the regular tire. But I got a quote from my dealership for the spare, jack, lockdown bolt for holding the tire. Total with tax was close to $1,000.

Thanks for the replies, for the record, I drove my father in law’s G90 and had to be flatbedded when we had a flat, he subsequently had to be flatbedded twice more due to flats, he returned the car and got a G80 with a spare. My mother in law also drives a G70, we are a Genesis family (for now), hers has a spare as well.

I love my 2023 GV80. But there are a few things I would like to see added:
-Key fob recognition for individual drivers
-Fog lights
-The ambient lighting in the front foot wells should be the same color as the rest of the ambient lighting
-Spare tire
-On front panel that controls heat /cooling seats etc.; should be brighter
-Trim around the heads up display on dash should be in a non reflective material

Do they put spares in any of the GV80's any more? I know when I got mine, some had spares some did not.
They should make it an option you can purchase, like floor mats, hitch and a first aid kit.

This part I wholeheartedly agree with…

I own a Canadian 2023 GV80 3.5 3d row Prestige. Absolutely agree with many comments in this thread. I am surprised that no-one mentioned the dash camera. I have been told that build-in dash camera is included on some European/Asian trims of GV80. I would like one please.
My wish list:
1. Spare tire
2. Wireless Android Auto or Apple Play
3. Back doors unlock feature
4. Build-in dashboard camera
5. Improved NAV (user interface for easier search and better maps).

Wireless Carplay/Android auto was just released this past weekend with an audio system update!

If you ever want to add your own dash cam, get one of these to make a 5 minute install.
