I met a friend of mine today who pulled up in his W220 S Class Mercedes he's had for a few years now, and he was amazed to see that I had a Genesis, and wanted to take a look at it. He just got his car back from the shop a couple weeks ago and is closing in on his warranty ending, so he's looking for new cars.
Right away he liked the color, and the badging (I have the KDM badges on the trunk, steering wheel and wheel hubs) I handed him the fob and let him take a closer look. It was also nice because I got to compare the S with the Genesis side by side, even though its an older S. We compared a number of things about the cars, he was impressed with all the standard equipment - he does not have heated seats in his Mercedes! Also, I found out that after you shut the car off, you can operate the front windows on the Genesis, but all windows and the sunroof on the Mercedes - I did not even know that before.
We pointed out all the technical baubles on the S, like the self-sealing doors and trunk, one touch rear windows, the little handle that pops out of the trunk lid when it opens so you have a clean surface to grab to close it (that had to be repaired at the dealership, btw). Overall he stated it has all the features you really want without the extra stuff that can break, which he liked.
He asked to take it for a drive so we started the Genesis up. He asked about the sideview mirrors and if they tilt in reverse, and I explained the three ways you can make them tilt on reverse, and he liked that - the Mercedes only will tilt one way he told me. He liked the adjustable lumbar and memory settings, thought the seats had good thigh support, and took it out on the road.
From driving the car around he basically stated that the car was peppy, had a more sporting ride than his S, and that the cabin was nice looking. He mentioned the 18" wheels probably make it a bit stiffer as well, but he liked the steering feel and how quickly the car responded to driver inputs - he kept saying sporty. He also commented that the sunroof was quiet, something we'd both complained about on BMWs we'd had where you can hear the air rush if you don't have the sun cover closed as well as the glass.
He came away impressed with the car, stating it had what German cars used to have - great mechanical elements and feel, but without all the fussy gadgetry that breaks and costs a lot to repair. He had his radio system replaced under warranty as well to a tune of $6k, and he's ready to get rid of the car before its out of warranty, and he stated he has to go take a closer look at a Genesis now.
