If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi all,

I had my 15,000 mile service today. The dealer was excellent by the way - Props to North County Hyundai!

Anyway - They used PEAK full synthetic 5W20 motor oil. I never heard of it. Does anyone know this brand? Any good?

Just curious. Its not a brand I know.

People on another forum say that Peak conventional oil is blended and packaged by Warren Oil, which also supplies Walmart house brands such as Tech 2000 synthetic. Not 100% sure about Peak synthetic, but probably supplied by Warren Oil also.

Peak may not be the best synthetic out there, but should be superior to any conventional or synthetic blend (a blend of conventional and synthetic oil).

I use mobil one super synthetic and its super great and i add a qt of lucus oil to it to keep the car lube on dry starts love it great combination

I do not use oil (snake oil) additives. Quality oils such as Mobil One, Synpower, Pennzoil Plat. or Ultra and many others provide all the protection needed in an engine. Additives may also work against an oil's design chemistry.

Pretty sure the dealership is using 5W-20 synthetic blend where I get my oil changed. Pretty sure my dealership told me they were using Quaker State...wonder what brand will be used next oil change haha? Why do the dealerships use different oil brands and not one?

They just use whatever they can get at the cheapest price in high volume and that also meets specs.

In addition to what RSPEC429 said, dealerships are independent businesses, and not owned by the auto manufacturer (as required by law in most states). Hyundai doesn't make oil, and even if they sold Hyundai oil it would be made by someone else, so there is no reason to use the exact same brand. Plus, some customer want synthetic or a specific brand and will extra for it.

Successful businesses find out what their customers want, and sell it to them. Not all customers want the same motor oil, and not all are willing to pay the same price.

Funny you guys are talking about this.
The dealer I purchased mine from used Quaker, just like the sticker says on the Air Filter. The dealer I go now used Valvoline synth blend (those were my free changes) and my last change which I asked for full synth they used Pennzoil ($89.00 oil change I made add!). Should I be at all concerned with all of the brands of oil they keep changing or should I say screw it and change the oil myself with Amsoil or Mobil or Castrol Synth??

Never heard of Peak oil. Only the antifreeze...

There is absolutely no problem in changing brands. The Quaker State sticker on the air filter is a paid advertisement put on by HMA at port of entry. Quaker State doesn't even sell motor oil in Korea (QS and Pennzoil are US brands owned by Shell).

Amsoil makes three different synthetics. The one that produces all the fantastic published test results does not meet API specs for the Genesis, so I wouldn't use that (could theoretically void your warranty). The other two are run-of-the-mill synthetics that are over-priced.

Castrol (BP) is OK, but no better than any others. The also have several different "levels" of synthetic (Edge, Edge Extended Performance, Magnatec).

By far the most economical place to get motor oil is to shop for 5-quart jugs at Walmart. I prefer Mobil 1, but there are other good ones as well.

The different oils aren't going to hurt anything.

If you want to start using an oil consistently, take the oil of your choice to a place you trust and have them put it in or DIY and get to know your Gennie.
