I am wondering what the two plastic housing pieces are that are on either side of the rear view mirror and stuck on the inside of the windshield. This would be on a 2014 R Spec. Can someone enlighten me?

One is for the rain sensing wipers. I do not have an R Spec, so can not comment on the other
 
Not sure, but it might be Windshield Wiper Deicer sensor.

....or Auto defogging system.
