  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Question - What do y'all play with your CD player in your cars?

The sound quality is pretty freaking awesome if you're using a CD verses anything else.

I'm playing the B side of Quadrophenia and you can hear everything. Just beautiful.

(For the kids out there, CDs were a digital format that appeared in the early 1980s and had a good run. Almost as good as vinyl records IMHO.)

I think you hear sounds in the music that I never heard before. I have a kick ass Marantz from 1977 that I had thought was the best sound ever! But this 2015 Genesis 5.0 just keeps surprising me.

Too bad that it won't rip straight from the CD to the internal hard drive - seems like a big oversight. You could toss a CD in my old 2007 Infiniti and it would copy the whole CD w/ all the metadata intact. I believe on the Genesis, it'll only take files from a USB stick and then it only copies one at a time.

True, that would be nice.

On another note, has anyone determined if the hard drive is accessible and replaceable? As I stated in another thread earlier this week, I was under the misconception (I really need to read the manual!) that the available space (26GB) in my Jukebox was somehow linked to the SD card. Most likely my wishful thinking as to how simple the upgrade would have been. I can't see how it would be so difficult to pop in a 1TB+ drive to give us some room for a music/video database IN the car. Unless they chose to use some type of flash chip on the system board...

I've currently loaded a bunch of 320k files onto a 256GB Samsung Fit Plus mini-stick and seems to be working well, but still would prefer to upload to the car.

CD player? What is that? Is that like a an 8-Track device?? :)

Seriously though, I haven't used a CD player be it home or in my car in probably a decade. No desire at all to deal with storage of, or buy of old tech. I'm 100% BT streaming now. My CD slot is now used for a phone mag mount.

Some of us aren't willing to part with "Legacy" tech - nostalgia, I guess. But as of now, a phone mount resides there in my car as well...

accessible, yes. Replaceable, indeterminate. The entire OS for the radio resides there and it’s not clear the file system or OS will tolerate resizing.

Carrying cd's around in my car with the heat/cold let alone having to find a place to store them, oh and having to constantly swap them out (I rarely if ever listen to just one album) is too much of a PITA to stick to the whole "it's nostalgic!" talk.

I would not go back to a CD , however good it might be on the genesis .
First its just 10+ songs , and starts to slip when i hit a pothole or speed breaker . Its a last decade technology - i am surprised the latest 2019 genesis still has CD slot. Hope the new 2020 model does have some upgrades.

Like Alper, I rarely play a CD anymore, much less even a 4K UHD Blu-Ray, because discs are just so 90's. But nothing sounds better than playing directly from the digital master. I was disappointed when I initially tried some FLAC files and found Genny doesn't support them. As an old school Hi-HFi guy, it's not so much about nostalgia as it is about audiophile SQ. I want the best sound I can get cause it makes a difference to my ears.

I know most people don't share my passion. But what qualifies as great sound to the kids of today actually makes my ears hurt, lol. 320k is about the bare minimum I can accept and that's about what you're getting with most Bluetooth streams unless you pay for higher in your Apple account or another service.

Lastly, to Kraig's point above, while my 320 files sound decent, I'd guess CD's would sound substantially better; I may have to break out a few classics for testing purposes... :stereo:

I suspect you're right, Sub. I wish Hyundai would disclose more about this but I've had no luck finding yet.

So is this the right thread to ask if any of you guys know of an adapter for my cassette tapes? I have a bunch of good ones I made in the 70s.

I kind of like the Sirius radio. Gives you a nice selection , just turn the radio on and go.
Yes, 300 stations to choose from and I listen 90% to two and split the other 10% among 3 others. I've not listened to AM/FM for a couple of years.

I don’t disagree with you. I haven’t bought a CD in many years and I mostly play various streaming services. I’m just saying that the Genesis sound system really makes CDs sound great.

I only use mine for DVD audio. I rip and burn my own mixes... takes a bit of work but I get about 70-80 songs per disc. 24bit 96khz 5.1 DTS audio sounds way better than a CD. I don't care if they break, I kept the ISO files on my server so burning another copy is a piece of cake.

Why have 17 speakers when you're playing 2 channel material? I'm okay with them getting rid of the optical drive IF the system can play a 6 channel FLAC, WAV or DTS file.

Could always get a DAC and pipe 11.2Mhz DSD through the aux input. I've done it but the analog gain stages in the headunit aren't the best. It gets warmed up a little too much.

XD-05 with a Burson V5i opamp, fed by an iPhone over DoP.

If only the headunit could decode DSD/DXD.

I dont know anything about the converters and adapters you guys speak of! That being said ,does it affect the longevity of head unit? All the things that are being done with the head unit, like using converters and other gizmos just to play music. Sounds to me like it would hurt it over time? Yes, no, maybe ,kind of so!

I used to only play CDs due to the higher bit rate until streaming music unlimited choices won me over even if the bit-rates are pretty low akin to mp3. Apple iTunes mp4 bit-rates has pretty good quality, however I got tired of burning my iTunes playlist to CDs.

Steaming services are just too convenience with unlimited songs to choose from on the fly. However, over the air HD radio stations in Atlanta sound as good as CDs on my Genesis radio I have learned recently when I tested the FM radio after my 13.5 update. Surprised me on how clear the Lexicon 17 speaker system sounds with a good sound source. I am sure CD and DVD music sources will sound as good or better than HD radio for anyone willing to create dedicated playlist or play specific albums.
