If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. This is my situation....

As read on my previous post, I purchased a 2013 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 tech package with 59000miles.

At 67800miles about 5 months later the transmission started to miss shifts and became very iratic, confused and sometimes jerky.

Hyundai did a scan and it came up replace transmission (I will post dealer paperwork for proof in prvt msg, not here to slander a dealership)

Est repair $9000 for tranny and aprox $6000install plus taxes.

Thankfully they repaired it under warranty......prob because i had recently just purchased it or because of the limited miles i put on.

So a month later......

I get a call.....the car is fixed.

This morning i go to the dealership pick up my car with my 2 kids (1 and 3)

I drive out of the dealership, shifts seem better but not smooth....i hit a major intersection with the intent to turn left....its early morning so traffic is heavy. While creeping to turn left i push the throttle and the car moves forward....then it slips and the car stops.....revs are climbing and i am stuck in the middle of a high speed intersection with heavy oncomming traffic.

Probably the most terrifying moment of my life.....my 2 toddlers in the car with fast moving cars rapidly approaching me stuck in the middle of a left turn while my car is reving with no response.

Oncomming vehicles had enough time to ether stop or swirve so there were no injuries.

I had it out with my Hyundai dealership.....they said it was road tested and ok.....i call bs.....im so upset right now, so hurt, cant believe i put my family in dangers way.

End result.......Needs a new transmission.....2nd tranmission was defective.

There ordering me a 3rd tranny.

This is my last Hyundai.
Please be cautious.

I will post dealer invoices if needed in private msg....

Chaos in total... $17,000. To replace? 8K of which for a 6 hour swap? $1250 an hour they were going to charge you? Anyone of importance at Hyundai that is watching: INSANE!!! CRIMINAL!!!! I wonder what Hyundai paid the dealer?

AND a rip off dealer?... Where did they get this POS replacement? Must not have been new. Maybe game boy level rebuild? OR something else with the CAR is causing two transmissions failing. CPU, hoses, coolers, something. Did these lazy nutty ever bother to do real problem resolution, or just slap another transmission in, no troubleshooting or testing?

Please send to me in PM. See below msg.

Thank you DRS.....

Im at the point im scared to drive my genesis.

It took them 4 full days to swap over my transmission with 2 techs.

I belive something within my genesis is making the transmission fail.

see pm

If it was a used Genesis, you are lucky they covered the repair.
I believe that used Hyundai's are only covered for 5 years, 60,000 on the power train, unless it was a CPO.

Every car maker has failures like this. Doesn't matter if it's a $150,000 car. I wonder if the dealer tried to pull a fast one, and install a rebuilt, or one from a junk yard.
You should look into this.
On the other hand, you are lucky they did anything.

At the least write a letter to Hyundai. May not get much but would like to do it just to see a reply.

It certainly makes you wonder if anybody test drove the vehicle after replacing the transmission...

You are welcome. And I get what you are saying. Especially after being stuck with your youngsters in oncoming traffic.

Thanks for the PM....

I agree that one good possibility is something else is causing the failures.

Yep, I guess be glad Hyundai replaced it. But who would afford $17,000 replacement on any car, no matter their wealth unless maybe a Italian super car. Insane.

Did you ever see the papers actually turned in with approval numbers from Hyundai for warranty reimbursement? You buy the car from that dealer (sorry for ignorance on this question)? You see where I am going here. All dealer issue? And the suggestion above that they put in a used bad transmission. This paragraph is a big stretch.

Why so many days of labor? And so many people? It was supposed to be a transmission replace. Not that complicated compared to the effort you experienced they had to put in.

This seems more like a dealership issue than a manufacturer issue.

I don't understand why you are hesitant to post the name of the dealership. Prevent someone else from doing business with these people because they sound like the definition of the term stealership. Unless you are lying, none of this qualifies as slander. You had work done at the dealership, this is what happened after the work was done. All FACTUAL. Nothing more to it.

He might also prevent himself from doing business at the dealership... Better to take it up personally with the GM and owner first. Then it they turn out to be jerks, let 'em have it.

The reason I will not post the dealership is:

1-my car was 7000miles out of warranty, and they are replacing my transmission free of charge.

2-service at the dealership up to now has been flawless.

3-they still have my vehicle as we speak.

As per the invoice.....the final invoice i recieved did not have pricing on it as it was covered under warranty. I was able to glance at there personal worksheet when i had to sign the consents and i saw pricing of $9000 for new tranny and 24hrs of labour x 2 techs est.

Sorry to hear about your traumatic experience. I wonder if they spent the month learning how to rebuild a failed 8 speed transmission.

Some techs don't check to see what specific fluid is needed depending on year model of Genesis. I caught one that did not know about the 7 and 8 speed transmissions using different fluids. Nor did they know the transmission filter was built into the pan; they claimed it had no filter. To change the filter in the 2011 ZF 7 speed V8 the pan has to be replaced same as with some BMW, Jaguars etc.

Well, at least they're customer service is not as horrid as their mechanical competence seems to be. Again, you have a service/dealership issue and not a manufacturer issue.

I am questioning the long term reliability of the hyundai 8speed transmission.

Yeah, especially when techs are putting in the wrong fluid...

Good luck getting it properly fixed. Sounds like your dealer just sent it out to AAMCO.

The most dangerous thing you did was to buy a used car with an almost expired powertrain warranty. Also, the '13 model you bought had incredibly high mileage. If you choose to keep the car without any warranty coverage at all you may suffer other expensive repairs down the road. These days it just makes no sense to be warranty naked.

This is my last Hyundai.

Don't jump the gun. I completely understand how upset you are having had that experience but neither Hyundai nor the dealership put your kids in the car. Having said that, I have owned two Hyundai's - a 2011 Santa Fe and my current 2012 R-spec. Both have been flawless. My cousin owns a 2012 3.8, also flawless.

Cars are mechanical creatures and used ones tend to be even more. I suspect the previous owner did something that caused the initial failure. There is no excuse for the dealership to have blown the replacement but it does happen. Since you say their past record was flawless then the problem may lie elsewhere in the drive train and beyond the ordinary shop tech's ability to diagnose.

Next time you pick up the car take it for a good test ride but don't put yourself in harm's way. If you are still not satisfied the repair has been done correctly get in touch with the dealer's GM and escalate, if necessary, to Hyundai Regional Service Manager. The incident you have described is very serious and could result in a significant damage finding should another failure result in injury or death. They should take this seriously.

But don't sell Hyundai short. They make a fine line of cars. Just buy your next one new.
