  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I found a good deal ($25k from a non Hyundai dealer) for a 2015 Ultimate sedan 3.8, RWD but it has about 81,000 miles. I'll need to buy an extended warranty, probably the GWC Exclusionary Coverage, which will add $2.5k. However I'm concerned about things like the adaptive air suspension and high tech electrical items. I'd appreciate any thoughts or comments...

Buying an extended warranty is always a good idea. These are very complex cars and the repairs can bear a hefty price tag. Just be careful with 3rd party warranty, make sure they cover the parts and repairs at the same price level as Hyundai dealership does.

You cannnot buy a Hyundai warranty because the car has over 60,000 miles on it 9i.e. it is outside the manufacturer's warranty). My Genesis has been very reliable, but I have less than 16,000 miles on it.

With that many miles and direct injection, be aware of potential carbon build-up problems. This problem is likely not covered by aftermarket warranties as it is not covered by the Hyundai warranty.

what's a preventative way around that? injector cleaner every so often?

Running Top-Tier gasolines or Chevron Techron will help some. Eventually, you'd need to have the engine and valves cleaned. BMW uses coconut shells to do so. Lexus/Toyota uses a combo DI and Port fuel injection to reduce build-up.

3.8 Ultimate does not have the adaptive suspension. The 5.0 does but I don't believe is is an air suspension. That's a lot of miles for a 2015. I have 60K on mine and they just replaced the transmission because of a surging it did in sport mode. Covered under warranty otherwise it would have been around $10K.

Unless you like to gamble this is not a good purchase....... It's a great car but you don't have a history on how the original owner maintained the car. This is a very complex car and replacement cost will kill you.
As trouble free as my 3.8L has been I probably will not keep it beyond 60,000 miles

I'm in a similar situation but the car is from a dealer, $19k 82mi. Did you purchase the genesis or what did you end up with? How has the vehicle held up over time?

My first generation 2015 3.8 AWD went from being the crown jewel in year 1-2 to now being a near total turd. So many issues crept up year after year that I'd love to dump it if used prices weren't so outrageous.

Issues: Pano roof no longer opens (known issue), front and back bumper clearcoat peeling (known issue), seat lumbar support died, black door pillars are fading, AC can't keep up well in the heat when at idle. Climate control has issues blowing out of proper vents, automatic wipers suck, auto lights don't come on when needed, worst of all is their use of cheap $2 amber turn bulbs that burn out CONSTANTLY and installing passenger side blinker bulb is beyond a PITA.

So for me, buying a 2015 first gen Genesis is a BAD bet to take on.

The sunroof of the this genesis had an issue closing and dealer said they'd repair it. I did notice a similar issue with the A/C but I thought it could've been bc the car hasn't been driven in 6 months. Coming from a 2013 g37 coupe the A/C was unmatched so I was kinda disappointed with the genesis there ( I live in Dallas Tx, it's 110 this week).Overall Its been split 50/50 reliability wise. Some owners said lasted over 100k mi with regular maintenance others say it became an issue around 60-80k mi. What a bummer I really love the styling of the car all around and it has all the features I'd like.

Just to be sure that you noticed...
He (at the time) was talking about a one to two year old car. You are talking about a seven to eight year old car.
I was hoping the genesis could be something like a Lexus LS that could last a while.

Its definitely not a Lexus. But it is significantly cheaper to maintain than a Lexus. My only beef is that I can't find an aftermarket shop that will work it. I'm in Dallas too.

When I tried to get dealer to work with Hyundai to fix my pano roof since I've complained a few times when I was in for oil changes, they said there was nothing they would do and the bill would be close to $3500++ to repair the mess.

That's terrible. The dealership I'm working w said they'd repair it before purchase so I really hope that issue doesn't reoccur

My 2015 5.0 Ultimate @ 104k (purchased @ 52k) has been relatively trouble-free.... The only thing for me that has fallen under the repair category so far has been an alternator. The only other thing is a flaky front parking sensor that I've been too lazy to replace. The rest of the $ that I've put into it has been maintenance & "consumables" - brake pads/rotors, tires & etc. Although, I do have some of the shared issues - the premature DRL bulb failures (stopped using "auto" lights), and the auto wipers seem to have a mind of their own. Everything else is still functioning normally so far...

My indie mechanic seems to have no particular problems working on it - said it was pretty easy, especially compared to a BMW or Mercedes.

Seems to be better built than the last Infiniti (G37S) that I had. That car was in the shop was 7 or 8 times by the same mileage for numerous (and expensive) issues - water pump, A/C compressor, throttle bodies and cam position sensors. Airbag warning light was starting to come on at random, so I got rid of it ASAP.

Buying anything at 80+ k is a gamble though, mostly because you have no clue on how it's been maintained (or not).

I've had my 2015 3.8 AWD for 1 year now got it with 60k miles now has 85k and has been a good car so far other than pano roof spontaneously shattering 2 weeks after I got it. Luckily the $3500 repair was covered under 30 day warranty. Had to replace front brake rotors and battery which I think is questionable. The DRL bulbs must be a common thing as I have had to replace the driver side twice.
