Potential new Genesis owner....with some questions!

Hi all,

I've been kicking around the idea of buying a Genesis sedan for a couple of months now. I'm starting a new job that will involve me driving approximately 25-35k a year, and figured that a Genesis would be the ideal highway car. Also, the 100k warranty would work well for me, since I will probably be driving that mileage for at least 2.5 years.

My concern is that the Genesis is a untested platform, at least in the US. Does anyone on the forum have north of 50k on their Genesis yet? If so, how does it seem to be holding up? I've been poking around on this site for a couple of days now, and other than the infamous " 2009 Suspension issue" :) -- which I had never heard of before this forum -- it seems like everyone is pretty happy with their ride.

How negotiable are the dealers where the Genesis is concerned? I've been prowling Ebay, AutoTrader, and Cars.com, and there seems to be a wide range of prices out there. I'd love a 2010 4.6, but is it feasible to get one with Nav for under $38k out the door? I've seen some non-Nav 2010 3.8's for under $32k as well. Seems like the 3.8 Genesis for $31k would have to be a better deal than a comparably equipped Maxima, Avalon, Camry, etc.

A couple of final thoughts: is there any option offered on the 4.6 that is not offered on the 3.8, other than the extra .8 liter in the engine bay? And did anyone happen to purchase their car through Costco? I have yet to use their auto buying program, but friends of mine did (bought Nissans) and were very pleased with the pricing.

Sorry for the long intro post -- I'll definitely let everyone know what I decide on!

Don't have a costco here, sorry, but there's a thread for the 2010 price paid. Browse that thread. You'll find what others have paid. I paid $38,500. You will find subtle differences between the V6 and V8, including options on the V6 that are standard on the V8.

My purposes for buying my vehicle was to provide an aftermarket support for the vehicle. So I didn't price compare with other vehicles. However, the vehicles that the Genesis is attempting to compete against are in the BMW/Mercedes class.

I'll definitely check the "2010 price paid" thread. As much as I would love to have a V8, it might make more sense financially to get the V6 with the options I want.

I saw your thread on some of the aftermarket items you are offering. Your 4.6 looks pretty sleek all tricked out in black! Keep up the good work -- in a previous life long ago, I worked for an aftermarket parts distribution operation out of FL. Once my kids are out of college, I'll be able to establish my "aftermarket" budget once again!
 
i bought my 4.6/Tech sedan through the CostCo pricing. Very simple, no haggling at the dealership. Find a participating dealership through CostCo's web site (they'll email the dealership with your email by the way...) and when you get there tell them you are doing the CostCo program. The dealership will have one or two sales types set up to do that program; they'll print some stuff and show you the money breakdown. The price I got was quite competitive to what others on this forum had obtained... at least until the end-of-the-2009-model-year discounts began. Even so, those folks haven't beaten me by much unless they got a car with a couple thousand demo miles on it or whatever.

My folks bought their Azera via the CostCo program and were quite satisfied with it; that's why I joined CostCo just to buy my Genesis. When I went to the dealership the first time my CostCo membership hadn't yet activated but the dealership didn't care. Perhaps just going through the CostCo website is enough.

V6 to V8 differences:
I don't know about the 2010 models; I know the 2009s better. In 2009, the V8s have a limited slip differential (LSD) while the V6s use the electronic traction control system to emulate the LSD. How well does the V6 emulation work? I don't know; there is a thread on this forum about snow traction though. Tire choice is a far bigger factor though than mechanical LSD vs. electronic LSD in my mind.

The US V8 models came with nicer interior materials than the base V6 models but I think I've read the "premium leather" is now on the V6s for 2010. Some interior trim panels (the "plastic wood" stuff) varies between V6 and V8 models but even that changed from US to Canada and during the year - one of those "running changes" type of things. It wasn't consistent. You'll have to carefully compare V6 models with your option package to a V8 with the same options to see what Hyundai is doing now.

V6 and V8 cars have different wheel & tire sizes. And, if you decide to do the rebadging thing (replacing the Hyundai corporate logo "H" with the Genesis "Wings") you'll have to make sure you get the correct wheel center caps... the spoke pattern differs; on V8 rims the spokes extend into the caps so sticking the less expensive V6 caps on V8 rims (2009 at least...) gives you cutoff spokes.

The V6 and V8 setups use different transmission vendors & different gearing, and have different "final drive" ratios in the differential. The V6s have a higher numerically final drive so the 0 to 60 time of V6s is closer to V8s than you'd expect based on the horsepower difference. Neither engine+driveline is a slouch. Most folks are beating the highway MPG rating by the way though the V6 models do get better MPG than the V8s. My V8 returns about 27MPG highway average.

mike c -- good info here. I've been a member of Costco for the last 10 years, but have never utilized the auto buying portion of my membership. It seems pretty cut and dried, which is a good thing. Hopefully they will have a dealer within a reasonable distance from where I live (Cary, NC).

Given the fact that this will be my highway car, I'm inclined to go with the 2010 V8. I'm not that concerned about the difference in MPG, and honestly, the 27mpg you are getting is definitely a number I could live with. I've seen some decent pricing on pre-owned '09 V8 Tech's (there is one on Ebay currently for $33k), but after spending most of today reading about the suspension issue posts on this forum, I am leaning towards a 2010. Hopefully, one of the dealerships has both years on the lot so I can test drive them back to back. Either way, it will be a significant upgrade from my last new car ('01 24v Taurus).

Thanks for the heads-up on the badging issue. I DEFINITELY will have the badges replaced -- there is something about that script H that just doesn't look right on this car. I'm not a huge fan of debadged cars, either, so it's nice to have an alternative that looks as sharp as the "Wings".

I've been going back and forth on colors. The only colors I've ruled out are the Champagne Beige Metallic and Cabernet Red Pearl. I really like Black Noir Pearl, but have been detailing cars since I was 15 and should have learned by now to avoid black automobiles! :
 
Hi Fwiw, and you being in Cary, I'm in Raleigh, and will recommend you to Southern States Hyundai - they tracked down the exact car I wanted from 500 miles away and were a breeze to deal with. Ask for Rick or Mike Hammer. Cary's dealership was a complete waste of time - very pompous and it really just sucked to deal with them.

I held of on buying until I knew what the changes would be for 2010, and ended up with an 09 as I liked the packages better, plus they cost less. As for the V8, I couldn't find any reason to pick it over a V6, but they are both good engines.

I've changed the badges and installed HIDs in my V6 with Premium+ package, and I've driven both 09 and 10 sedans (there is no ride quality difference), PM me if you need any info.
