  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

This last Saturday, January 9th 2021 my 2015 Genesis V8 Ultimate scared me like I never have been before.
While taking a turn (with some gusto) on a relatively empty highway at night, with two other cars passing by in the other lane, all systems shut off for half a second, came back up, went down for another 2 seconds, and came back up again. During these interludes power steering, and brakes went "mechanical", fuel flow ceased, and upon restoration the SatNav and information screens showed the Genesis logo as if the car had just been started.

Has anyone here experienced this before? I saw a few posts about older Genesis sedans doing this, but haven't seen any from my car's model.

Currently waiting for the local Hyundai dealership to pick it up, but I'd like to know if anyone here as encountered this and what the problem/fix was.

Wow. That's scary AF!

I have had all my lights go out once at night and almost went in a ditch. All interior and exterior went dark but I had full power. This happened when I tried to activate the high beams. Others have had faulty switches that caused this. Were you activating the turn single or anything when this happened?

No, nothing unusual at all.

I failed to mention that two weeks prior to this incident, again, my girlfriend and I had just dropped my daughter off with her mother, and as we drove through town, it jerked like we hit something. Again, the flights flickered ever so briefly that I wasn't sure I had actually seen it happen until she mentioned it as well. We both believe this was a precursor event to what we experienced Saturday evening.

Wow, that is crazy. Had the light switch problem at night (headlight off then on etc), all dash reading haywire including no speedo or gear reading, reduced (limp mode?) throttle response but never complete disengagement as you have described.

Good luck and please let us know what you find out.

So just a message back to report, (sorry had to leave the country on business shortly after picking the car up from the shop, this was my first chance to respond).

All of this turned out to be the battery.
I had known for a while that my battery was acting sluggish. Slow to start the car especially in colder weather as it's an almost 6 year old battery.
If you have a Genesis and have never looked at the battery in the trunk, it's quite a sight to behold, roughly 2 1/2 size of a normal automotive battery.
They're Absorbant Glass-Mat batteries (AGM) meaning they're spill proof and less prone to premature failure.

However, it seems the Genesis and G80's won't run directly off the alternator as cars did in my youth, rather the alternator charges the battery, which distributes power to the entire system. The way it was explained to me is the first cell of the battery was old and decaying which explained the sluggishness when starting, the second cell (which was explained as sort of a "fail-over") was dead.
Voltage readings were sporadic when the car was running before replacement. After replacement everything was fine. Alternator was fine as well.

Scary, but an acceptable explanation. Few hundred dollars later and I was back on the road, right as rain.

Good explanation of how the system works as compared to the old systems.

What I plan to do, if I still have the car, is at year 5 put in a new battery. They are a wear item and usually go between 4 and 5 years. Better to replace it on your terms than a January day at 5 below zero.

I know what you mean about the battery... I replaced mine (original) around a month ago. It was like trying to pull a dead body out of the trunk! Thankfully, the parts store gave me a cart to wheel the deader in & new back out. The lady behind the counter asked me if it was from a boat.

When I got the battery warning light, I was about 20mi from home... So I'm not sure if driving it that distance also took out my alternator or not. But I made it back home in one piece. Long story short, the alternator had to be replaced as well.

Here's a pic of the original battery - Not quite "Unlimited Power" but it made it almost 6 yrs!

Hey i just experienced the same thing in my 2015 g80, was going down a backroad at about 50mph and suddenly lost all power and response for about two seconds and it all came back on to the opening screen as if i had just turned the car on. However i just replaced my battery back in November so how I'm not sure if my problems could be stemming from the battery as well. I've also had some steering issues like tough steering and loud thuds when turning the wheel, and when those loud thuds happen my entertainment screen goes black, but my dash cluster remains on. it will also inconsistently cut power when turning the car off or on, it will do the normal push my seat and wheel back and sing to me for only a half a second as opposed to 5-10 seconds. Just a bit ago today I got stranded in a parking lot because it wouldnt turn on at all, and thats not a key fob issue since the battery in that is only about a month old, and turned itself past accessory mode to on (didnt start the engine of course) while i was out of the car. My alternator and my battery were tested and shown to be just fine, i also checked all fuses and relays and they were all good as well. not sure what else it could be.. any idea?

I’ve also experienced this. We put a new battery in last year, and we just had the car checked at the dealership - everything is fine. However last week the car died in a parking lot and my husband had to bring out the jumper cables but it turned on before we even put the cables on it. And then just now we made a turn up a slight hill and it powered off and instantly powered back on. The genesis logo was on the dash as if it truly restarted, and we lost a lot of throttle. Have no idea what’s going on.

I am having the same issue is it a bad battery connection?
