  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Interesting article just the same. I traded a current generation 540 M-Sport for my G70. I can nitpick both of them. And each of them is better at certain things. Overall I have zero regrets, and I could have bought another 540 if I really wanted to. I love the G70.

He had some good points but also some that are not accurate.

Let's face it guys, BMW knocked it out of the park with the M340i, and no matter how right Genesis gets materials, NVH, etc, until the Genesis outperforms the M340i, it's always going to be treated as being on the Junior Varsity team.

I have never been able to like the 3 series in general. I’ve had quite a few of them as loaners and they just don’t feel upscale at all to me. Sure, the acceleration is great, but it’s not so much faster than the G70 that I feel like it’s worth it.

And to get anywhere near the features the G70 has for $53,000 the M340 is around $68,000. And even then there are features you cannot even get such as ventilated seats, power tilt telescopic steering wheel, NAPA leather, comparable sound system…

The only reason the Genesis is treated as “junior varsity” is because so many enthusiasts are hung up on it being a Hyundai.

Guys, please note that I too am a G70 owner, and I'm coming from a place of honesty and acceptance. I've rented a few 3-series vehicles before as well, and in casual daily driving, the G70 is near indistinguishable. I believe this is what Genesis engineers were aiming for. They wanted to make a solid, excellent-handling vehicle that delivers on a well-balanced package of safety, technology, performance, and luxury. To that end, they succeeded: It is an excellent all-around vehicle. But the M340i manages better performance with better fuel-mileage.

The weak-points of the G70, as we all know, are fuel-economy, engine NVH, and when compared to the Big 3, performance, particularly off-the-line. In particular, we all know that initial acceleration compared to the M340i, the S4, a to a lesser degree, the C43 AMG, is deficient. This appears to be a deliberate decision on Genesis's behalf, probably to preserve elements of the drive-train.

For all the things Genesis does well (and even excels at comparatively), in stock form, because it loses in acceleration, for whatever reason many people disproportionately assess based on that performance delta. That G70 vs S4 vs C43 AMG video has almost a million views, and illustrates all-too-clearly the performance difference, and how in everyday driving, what would (most-likely) happen in everyday driving scenarios. In other words, meeting or exceeding those targets in performance would open the door for people to pay more attention and perform more nuanced comparisons. But many won't even get to those nuanced comparisons while there's a performance delta.

Now we all know that a JB4 can change that outcome (at the expense of a warranty), and that Genesis could very easily tune the vehicle differently from the factory. The truth is they don't, and until they do, the adolescent part of the decision-making process of many will go for the faster vehicle with the "better" brand name.

Interesting response. My G70 does not feel deficient from a dead stop. I drove a current S4 when they came out. I had read so many comments about the S4’s “lag” that I made a point to nail it from a dead stop more than once. It rally did have a very noticeable lag from a dead stop.

I agree that fuel economy is deficient, but when you pay well over $10,000 less for the car it becomes mute point. Who the hell cares about it?

I should point out that I have owned two BMW 5 Series and two A7 Audis, so I’m not biased.

I had a 3 series owner drive up beside me at a red light yesterday. He was so confused as to what I was driving. I decided to punch it and of course left him standing still. At the next light, he pulled ahead of me looking at my front grill in bewilderment and then rolled his window down and ask what the hell I was driving. (Very nice guy btw) I responded by telling him is was a G70 and my car was made by the same person who made his car... (well kinda).. He said he just LOVED the car and thought it was a rocket. Too be fair, I'm not stock but it was cool to hear all that... and it's not that uncommon actually. I've talked to lots of people in traffic with them wondering if it's an Aston Martin.

Bottom line is it's just a fantastic car and with the "mild" tune I have, it's faster than a M340i (not that that matters) and just does everything so well.

Yes.. this here is an important point.. because bmw underrates the m340 from what I remember.. So if you tune the G70 up closer so they are more evenly matched...... then what happens.. ??

Another more critical part.. I read in some article or thread a while back that Genesis tunes their transmissions for more safety and longevity compared to bmw....... in order to include the 10 year 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty. ........ Now.. if you had the bmw.. (made in Mexico.. by the way).... and they told you.. "hey .. if we take off some fractions of a second in acceleration... we can more than double your drivetrain warranty.. would you be interested in this option ?? .. " ... then.. would you take this option ?? . I know I would take that immediately.
