  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Newbie here. Been looking hard at the Genesis sedan. I know most of these come loaded and a person can get a lot of car for the money. But my question is what are some of the major cons or issues with these cars? I would appreciate some feedback. Thanks.

Well, if appearances or perceptions of wealth are important, the Hyundai brand may not project "I have arrived."

These are some of my peeves:
  • The transmission & engine management programming sucks compared to performance sedans.
  • The stuff that looks like wood is plastic
  • The Tech Package does not have Bluetooth streaming prior to 2013
  • The finish on the wheels seems sub-par and fragile
  • No cooled passenger seat

Handling is very subjective. Make sure you test-drive the model year you're thinking of buying on rough roads before you buy one, especially if you're buying a MY version prior to 2012.

- Steering is a bit numb
- seats are not very bolstering
- Premium and Technology package electronics are unreliable and expensive to fix
- Base radio is strangely void of modern technologies (though the speakers still sound great)
- Very little aftermarket support
- Headlights dim with acceleration and brighten once you let off the go peddle
- Electronic nannies are always lurking, even when you think you've turned them off
- Accent lights are not Daytime Running Lights and can't be used as so.
-DRLs look silly
- Pre 2012 models are looking a bit dated, not bad, but dated.
- Very little interior storage
- rear wheel drive only
- Back seats don't fold down for some reason. Nothing but a trunk pass-through that will be useful if you often find yourself transporting sticks or yard rakes.
- No Luxury dealerships, you are buying a Hyundai so you have to go to Hyundai dealerships.

As you can see, the list of things that I don't like about the car are pretty nit-picky, no matter what car you choose you will always have a list of things that aren't optimal.

But for about 20K you could have a 333 hp Hyundai that will get puzzling looks for days or a Camary like the one your high school math teacher drove.
Decision was simple for me.

That is a lot of negativity. I am really enjoying my RSPEC immensely, and have spoken to a couple of others in my area with the V6, and they are thrilled. Now all these people do have 2013 models

I appreciate the feedback that has been given. I have no illusions about this being a luxury car. But every car model has its pros and cons and some have more bugs than others. I figured this would be a good place for some feedback.

You need to specify what model year you are looking at.

There is only one drawback that I have found with my 2013, that is that it is so smooth and quite at speed that I constantly find myself well over the speed limit, just today I was wondering why everyone was driving so blasted slow just to look at the speedo to notice that I was doing 100MPH. I guess there is one other con with this car, it is so fun to drive that I'm finding excuses to take the long route everyplace I go, my 150 mile weekly commute has been running 400 miles since I bought the car, that is hurting the gas budget. But if you consider it a bad thing that a car is fun to drive, fast, quite and smooth then maybe a Camry would be a better choice.

One word--electronics. Model years 2009-2012 have numerous issues with the NAV and radio.
Most with Technology Package. Premium Package has had fewer complaints, and Base Trim has been very reliable.

I was looking at some between '10-'12 because those are in my price range at the moment. Guess I need to rethink that.

Base trim has been rock solid for the first two years of ownership. The only issue I experienced was the tires being permanently deformed and unwilling to balance off the lot. Hyundai and the dealer picked up the tab.

Other than that, I still get compliments to this day on how it looks and drives.

What is your budget? This info helps dramatically. I have a 2009 w/tech and have zero issues with the nav/radio. It's been a great car and I still love it after almost 6 years of ownership.

Search the forum for oil consumption issues with 2012 5.0 V8 engine. Problem seems to be have been fixed in 2013 or maybe late 2012.

It is a Hyundai so resale price will reflect that. I knew that when I bought one but I keep my cars for over 200,000 miles. If you want to trade in a couple of years it might not be the car for you.

The more miles that are on the car when you buy it, the more it will cost you to keep it up.

The car is not the ideal commuter car because of low MPG, but can't be beat if you only plan to put on 6-8,000 miles a year.

Replacement costs for the Grey Poupon is rather high.

Just got me a 2011 Genesis and I love it so far. My only small con right now, is that it does not like speed bumps or rough roads.

I have a 2012 R-spec (build date was Mar 2012 I think) and the only issue I've had was an outdated NAV map (which the dealer updated without charge).

My cousin has a 2012 3.8 Tech and has not had one single issue.

My only complaint? Too many bells and whistles. Don't use half of them but I sure enjoy the ones I do use.

What I like is I'm going a lot faster than my wife realizes I am, which is another way the Genesis is "quieter" than other cars I've owned. :D
