Pros and cons of buying a Genesis

Cons:
- Not much good to say about the transmission, except for the warranty. It's a difficult thing to live with at times, like getting used to a horse with an odd gait. Walks when you want it to trot, that sort of thing.
- Not crazy about blue everything on the dash and controls. Blue is the worst possible color choice for night driving, as the human eye is very insensitive to that color. The old BMW orange/red should be standard - much easier to see at any time, day or night.

I believe the dash/gauge color is a preference thing. As I hate orange/red gauges, they are harsh to me. I love blue, green, white. To me the Genesis blue is fantastic.

I heard that the 2012/13 8 speed was clumsy. I find my 2014 to be well sorted out with the transmission. My business partner has a 2014 Equus and his 8 speed is very good as well. So I believe this has been corrected.

The older 6 speed ZF box that was in my 2011 with the 4.6 was very good also.

That is an industry psychology thing. The human eye does not focus well on blue light, while it focuses very well on red/orange light. I think many aircraft use orange/red lighting for this reason.

I cannot say I know anything about the psychology - but I can say that my own experience is blue is MUCH easier for me to see at night. Red/Orange is just harsh. This is many years of driving many different cars.

White has always been the easiest for me.

I test drove my R-spec during the day and it looked like the instrumentation was white - never thought to ask. Unfortunately, I can't see blue (it is very fuzzy) well so it has been a problem for me too. Would prefer almost any other color (except perhaps green).

I would not describe the tranny as "clumsy" but there is a pronounced delay if you punch the gas from a standing start. This may be intentional as there is more horsepower here than in most cars and the result could be dangerous. I have found the transmission shifts up and down effortlessly - seamless upshifts but you can feel the lower gear shifts while downshifting. Not a biggie in my book.

When I first drove the Genesis it has some delay in kick down at highway speeds, but after about 500 miles or maybe 1000 miles, that has seemed to go away. It now drops gears as soon as I mash the pedal. I haven't noticed any delay from the start off the line, but I do notice that the traction control can be a little quick to cut in sometimes which causes a drop in performance right off the line.

I certainly can "see" how the blue might be difficult for some. I just prefer it to orange or red. But for me white is best.

Which package do you have to get to have the driver information system that displays between the tach and the speedo? I thought it was with the navigation, but I have seen some with nav that don't have this. They just have the generic blue info area.

Premium package has the touch-screen unit and Tech package has DIS.

The car adapts to your driving and yes that takes a while. Car was sluggish when I got it, but now I have to be careful because it's sports car powerful.

I'm still looking for the first real downside to my car....

Only two I can come up with are depreciation a bit high (likely due to new bodystyle, but if you buy it right you should be good) and some dealer service depts don't treat folks the way you would want to be treated for a car in this price range and category (see my thread on Dealer not torquing the oil drain plug - ugh).

But really neither of these are the car's issues, more brand related I suspect.

The only downsides that I've seen, are:
If you live where it rains, you need a trunk liner, because if you open the trunk with it's raining, a half cup of water dumps into the trunk.
The gas cap door is plastic.
Rocker panels seem to be plastic.
DRL's are not bright white. (different bulbs can be exchanged)
Real wood would have been nice.
Bad in snow (with standard tires)
MPG on short trips is bad. (on the other hand, if you're only doing short trips, a tank will still last a long time)

On the upside..
V6 has more power than you need
Interior is "REAL" nice.
Ist Gen Genesis looks a lot like the Equus.

I frequently have 3 girls in my backseat. They are of the canine variety, however.

I'm pretty observant when it comes to picking up on the idiosyncrasies of my car. I notice no dimming in my lights, even in the halogens before switching to HID. This is while running an aftermarket sub as well.

I would have your alternator checked for free at an AutoZone just to make sure. There's the potential that your alternator isn't keeping up with the electrical load - although I would think your symptoms would be reversed, brightening on acceleration/dimming when letting off as alternator is spun up or slowed down.

Another thought is that your acceleration is jarring some ground loose.

- It was caused by the Halogens sucking down 55 watts mixed with the direct injection electronics sucking a ton of power too. It was extremely faint. The only reason I noticed was probably because I'm from rural Wisconsin and the Milky Way can seem bright at night sometimes

Most of you are a little older than me.

I have the 7 speaker radio. Non-tech package. Its not loud enough for me. Needs more amplification. Speakers seem to sound good for stock.

The gas mileage doesnt seem to bad. I average about 24 miles per gallon. Not bad for a 4000lb car

I have 17" tires with 225 wide. I would prefer at least 235-245 wide for better traction on dry roads. However, the 225s are great in the snow

As long as this car is reliable I love it. I dont have all the bells & whistles so I'm hoping for less electric issues.

- YES!! The tranny blows (there's a joke in there) at being sporty. It doesn't like down shifting. It would rather do anything than down shift. Unless you floor it, but then its too much.

- I have nothing but hate for that Casio Watch back light blue. Not only does it look tacky (like the back light of a $20 Casio watch) but it is too bright at night. Luckily you can just turn the screen off.

Just a bunch of little niggles, no major hate for any important aspects of the car from me.
