Puzzled By Battery Connection In Trunk - Wallymn Read.

Cleaned out trunk (again) today, and looked under the false floor to where the Spare Tire and Battery are located. Something puzzles me.

The PLUS (+) side of the battery has two cables going to it. The smaller of the two is connected directly to the positive post, but the larger of the two is connected to a small box that sits next to the positive post. (this box also had fuses, and other things in it). I don't understand why it has two plus connections, and also how the two connections are connected to each other.

Wallymn changed to an aftermarket battery recently and would know how and why these two Plus connuctions work. WALLYMN, ARE YOU READING THIS? Also Wallymn, does your new battery have a vent tube like the OEM?

Also noticed that the Negative (-) cable connects to the bottom of the trunk. No Negative cables going through the car like the Positive.

Not even counting the cost of an OEM battery, just needing a battery in a hurry will be a problem if batteries can only be bought from a Hyundai dealer.
 
Probably the direct cable is to the starter solenoid while the fused circuits are to all of the lower-draw circuits including all of the items that are active when the car is not running.
 
This doesn't answer your question about the wires but I don't think finding a replacement battery would be a major issue. According to this site the Genesis uses an H8 Group battery. The Interstate Battery site also list the same replacement information. If you click the "Also Fits" tab on the Interstate Battery site it will list a large number of other luxury cars that this size battery is also used in.

I had no difficulty finding one in stock at an Autozone store less than 15 miles from me and I live in fairly rural SC.

Ok, I can't look at the truck now (so this is from memory).. There were two positive leads (same as on the Wife's Honda) I just reconnected to the new battery, I don't remember a "vent hose" in the OEM battery.

I also had to use an extra bunge cord to hold the new battery in place.

It was a simple replace. As I said in prior posts I used an Optima Battery, it was much smaller but rated for the same CCA.
 
I tried poking around hmaservice.com, but I'm an idiot when it comes to shop manuals and reading electrical circuit diagrams. :(

Ever since I nearly burned my car (not the Genesis!) by accidentally reversing the jumper cables (cables melted and I singed my hand knocking the clamp off the post), I tend not to take chances with things of an electrical nature ;)

Otherwise, I just wing it!

Gotcha, DG. I fried the electrical system on my '79 MGB whilst winging it. :mad: My wife told me that I shoulda read the manual a little closer. Maybe we should go and have a beer to console ourselves and remain convinced that we are real MEN. :grouphug:

(GAWD, did I just do that hug thing? My wife is have a terrible influence on me.) :o

Thanks. That Interstate looks exactly like the OEM battery except the Interstate is white, and the OEM is black. Just for the heck of it, I will check AutoZone, (and AdvantageAuto) as you never know when you will need a battery. Lastly, where in "Rural SC" are you. My Daughter lives in a rural area near Gilbert, just west of Columbia. Also have good friends in Greenwood and others in Greer.

Yes, there is a clear vent hose that leads from the "forward edge" of the battery, and goes down through the floor of the trunk, through a rubber grommet. I think this is to vent the hydrogen gas out of the battery to the outside, not inside the trunk. If not to vent hydrogen, then it is to have any overflow acid go outside, not in the trunk.
 
well now you have me worried, anyone know why the stock battery was vented?
What Bob said. In a battery in the engine compartment, there's plenty of places for the gas and acid to escape (generally down). In an enclosed space with a mat on top, you're asking for an explosion.

The closest town is Gaston, pretty much directly south of Columbia about 20 miles. Same county as Gilbert (Lexington). Grew up here. Not quite as rural as when I was growing up, but still pretty "country", especially on my side of the highway.

My closest Autozone didn't have one in stock (1 day to get one), but both the Autozone and Advance Stores in West Columbia had them in stock.
 
Well, I pulled out the trunk mat today, (hard to do on 1 leg), I can't find the hole you explained....
 
Just a few inches forward of the battery, my car has a rubber grommet in the floor of the "spare tire wheel well". A clear tube runs from the Plus end of the battery, down through the center of the grommet. I have not checked under the car to see just where the clear tube comes out.

I doubt if my car is the only one to have this, as it is a safety feature. My build date is Sept. 18, 2008 and it could be that Hyundai made a "Running Change" on later models.

I've had cars in the past where the manufacturer made "Running Changes" so it would not surprise me, but this is too good a feature to stop, due to safety.

Look under the car, rear, and you will see a down 'vent' tube.
 
Just a silly queston.
I wondered if the aftermarket replacement batteries will have the venting systeman a output connection like shown in the picture above. I am assuming that the little connevtor box with + on it will just fit on any battery post.
