If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'm hoping you guys can help me understand what the reliability prognosis would be for an out of warranty, low-mileage 3.8 / Premium Plus. (added: 2010)

The car appears to be well-maintained and under 30K miles. I'm not seeing
a lot of horror stories on this forum, so I'm thinking this isn't a huge risk?

Thanks

Don't know what the price is but I've got a 2010 V8 and just crossed 60K. It's been rock solid for the 25K I've put on it.

You can find some great deals if you keep on looking. I would at least find a cpo it cost a dealer 500 for it. I just leases a base 3.8 on Jan 2nd for cheap then Sonata.

I wouldn't.

Can't you get an aftermarket warranty that covers the car bumper to bumper for 10 years....(including tech items) ?????

Check consumer reports. Also I have 145,000 miles on my 4.6 and its still runs and drives like new.

You did not post the year, so it's hard to make guesses on the vehicle reliability prognosis...

With the complex technology in cars these days, it would be foolish to buy anything without picking up a trustworthy extended warranty. That is, unless you are buying a basic transportation junker. A '10 Genesis is hardly in that category.

Ahh so it is, my apologies...

2010 3.8 drivetrains and chassis (really pretty much all Genesis 3.8 drivetrains and chassis) are generally pretty solid. The only real gripe anyone has had was about the harsh ride in the 2009 (improved in 2010, greatly improved in 2012, and cloud-nine-fine in 2015). The premium (non-DIS) head unit was higher reliability and allows self-service map updates, as compared to the higher-performance/higher-cost/dealer-only-map-service Tech unit (w/ DIS).

For any used-Genesis out of warranty, definitely buy an extended Hyundai backed bumper to bumper warranty. It will give you greater piece of mind to drop $1-2k now on a warranty than risk $2-3k in a few months/years for a new navi/head unit.

HPP reduces the months/mileage value of the extended warranty for each year the car has been in service, and they do not reduce the price, so you get less coverage for the same price on a used car. As to reliability, I had to have both the transmission and the head unit in my 2010 3.8 replaced under the original warranty. This is not the norm, and the car has been perfect ever since, though.

Picked up an 09 premium plus with tech (6 cyl) and 63k miles for $14,300 over a year ago and she's been perfect. Can't believe how nice it drives, I feel like I got a steal of a deal. Love the car. Plan to pick up a 2015 in a few more years.

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback.

From a reliability stand point I think the car your looking at will be fine. But I have another question for you:

Would you rather have electronic features or more power? (This question only works if the price for a Premium 2010 is similar to a base 2012+)

For the 2012 year the 3.8 Genesis got a boost in power from 290hp to 333hp and that's pretty significant. Then on top of that the car also received an updated 8 speed transmission and body panels.

I remember when I was searching for Genesi? Genesises? Genesisiz? A Genesis, I found I could get a 2011 or older with options or a 2012 or newer base.

I chose the 2012 or newer base Genesis because I'd rather have more power and sportyness than electronic features. I also understand not all of us have the same tastes and some would rather have the interior features over the exterior ones, just wanted to present the option.

My friend recently bought a 2012 Hyundai Certified Genesis with only 16,000 miles. The car is in the dealer shop and they say it needs a new GPS unit and new transmission too. Likely, $10,000 worth of repairs although it will be covered under warranty. My 2013 which I had for an year now had zero problem. Luck of the draw I guess.

Maybe not entirely luck. One reason that someone might get rid of a car after only 16,000 miles is that the car has problems.
