  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey guys. I was wondering if our car's headlights uses a permanent sealant? I am trying to paint my headlights with a friend of mine and he asked me that question. I guess he doesn't want to cut open the back of the housing since it's a pretty new car. Regardless if anyone knows if our housings has a permanent sealant please please please let me know :) I will be posting some pictures soon of the modified headlights.

Thanks in advance :)

This is going to be an assumption. I assume they wont have a permanent sealant on them.

However, the only way to find out...? Bake those bitches B-)

Just don't do any sanding on the lens, or the UV protectant will be removed and the headlight lens will turn yellow in a year or so.

Bad news yo! i tried opening with a heat gun and turns out our gennys headlight's sealant is stronger than others. It took me 2 hours to open 20% of the headlight -_- it was ridiculous. The sealant is extremely strong. My friend's 2011 370Z headlight was much easier. Basically with the heat gun if you heat his headlight for 2-3 seconds the sealant gets loose. With the Genny took me 7-10 seconds which was damaging the housing aswell.

I haven't tried baking since I heard so much horror stories ( headlight color change, overheating, condensation, etc )

So i'm getting a different new grille which hasn't arrived yet and vinyl on some chrome parts of the car. As far as headlights I'm gonna have to wait and see. If i get new headlights I definitely want to try baking the old headlights to test them.

EDIT-My genny is a 2012 which has the LED strip light....i saw other members with 2009-2011 headlights being openend and repainted so I believe their sealant wasn't as strong as the 2012 or they baked it.

Baking is simple and harmless if done correctly. 220 is for about 25 mins. Gets it just hot enough to pull apart within 3 mins or so.

Nissan uses rubber butyl sealant. Its always quite soft but it seals up really nicely. I have a few feet of it in my basement :D
