  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

What made you pick the 5.0 vs. the 3.8? I am back and forth. I was pleased with the power of the 3.8 but the 5.0 definitely has more punch. I like the torque of the 5.0 but really like the mpg of the 3.0. What was it that made up your minds?
Thanks.

What made up my mind was the dis and 9.2 screen. Then it was the suspension. There is also a co2 filter that I really like. But if your having an issue picking just got with the one that you feel fits you the best. Good luck.

The 3.8 Ultimate has all of those things except the adjustable suspension. The 5.0 gets you bigger motor, adjustable suspension and fog lights over the 3.8 RWD. However, the 3.8 AWD has some features that are not available on the 5.0 too: heated rear seats, heated steering wheel and headlight washers.

Well like I said which ever one feel right the 5.0 felt right for me.

That's like saying why did you choose the 4 banger over the 6. Honestly, have you ever heard of someone who has said, my oh my, way too much power, I should have gone for the smaller engine? As for those who say the six is almost comparable, you are in denial. I tried both throughly with no sales people with me and there is a major difference. I am by no means a racer or need to prove my car is faster than yours, just like the feeling of touching the gas and effortlessly taking off. Something subliminal about having the 8 and gobs of power. At a certain point in life we deserve to pamper ourselves. As for gas milage, I could not give a hoot if I got 8mpg. If you spend $70K on a car and you worry about gas milage then you simply cannot afford the car IMHO.

I have to be honest and admit that I didn't have time to test drive the 5.0. I spent so much time on the 3.8 that I had to go and so will come back later. I was impressed with the 3.8 power (more than I expected) but my last 4 cars have been 8 cylinder high horse power cars. They get out quicker and more effortlessly. I think that I am somewhat trying to talk myself into the 3.8 because I am getting to where I hate paying the high price for gas. It just annoys me. I also don't like having to use Premium gas. Again, it just annoys me to think that my money is going to somewhere like Dubai. Still, it may be that one drive in the 5.0 will have my mind made up. I like the way my current car accelerates with no effort at all.

I am curious about the suspension difference. That could be significant. I had not heard about that yet. I do like fog lights. All else seems to be available in the 3.8. I am not up north and do not need AWD.

One last question for the moment; I see that the 5.0 does 0-60 in about 4.7 seconds. I can't find out how fast the 3.8 is in the 0-60.

By the way, to Midnightsun; they had a Montecito Blue model on the lot and it was beautiful. I really like that color. This one had a light gray interior and I think I am sold on that color combination.

I guess I would be bias but yes this colour is thee colour for this car IMHO. Stunning just about wraps it up. Got tired of the same old gray, black, white thing.

Motor Trend "got 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds and passed the quarter-mile mark in 14.7 seconds at 96.1 mph" for the 3.8 AWD model:

One other subtle trade-off for the 3.8 versus 5.0 is that the 5.0 has staggered 19" wheels. To some this is a major plus. However, to others, it can be a major disadvantage in tire cost (can't rotate) and gas mileage.

Well put and I cannot agree more.

The quickest times I have seen Quoted for each model:

5.0 - 4.75 0-60
3.8- 5.9 0-60 and 14.0 @100 1/4 mile

so basically your looking at about a second difference 0-60 time both are top end limited by gear ratio to @155mph.

IMO the 3.8 is plenty quick enough unless you plan on drag racing and if you plan on that with a 4500 pound luxury sedan I don't know what to say.

The only thing I miss off the 5.0 is the fog lights

Agree
Don't miss the fog lights
Like the heated steering wheel and rear seats.

I seriously doubt the 4.75 number for the 5.0 V8. Most auto press are too cheap these days to do any accurate testing, so many of them just guess. That (4.75 seconds on 0-60) is way faster than Hyundai claims for the 2012-2014 R-Spec.

For example, one publication that does do actual testing is Car and Driver, and here is what they say about 2012 R-Spec:

"We squeezed a 5.1-second 0-to-60 time from the R-Spec and covered the quarter in 13.7 seconds at 103 mph. Our long-termer’s initial test numbers read 5.3 and 13.8 at 104."

Considering that the 2015 is quite a bit heavier than the 2012, 4.75 sec seems like a stretch, even if 2015 torque went up when the 2015 HP went down compared to 2012 (same 5.0 displacement).

I have not mashed the throttle yet but even at normal every day driving I can tell you the 2015 feels more powerful than my previous RSpec. The right word would be effortless power. Regardless, plenty fast.

Cognitive dissonance.

Yeah, trying to pretend that there's no performance difference between the 3.8 and the 5.0 definitely qualifies.

I didn't say there is no difference. But saying that in "normal every day driving I can tell you the 2015 feels more powerful than my previous RSpec" is not a scientific claim that I am willing to accept without more data. A gas pedal can have a stiff spring, or a weak spring, on it, with the same exact transmission and engine. You can't tell by peddle feel as to which is faster unless one does a real 0-60 test.

Just because "you don't accept it as scientific" doesn't mean it's not valid. Furthermore, Hyundai engineers are on record saying that they've adjusted the torque curve of the 2015 5.0 so that it has more pull down low. That's not something you're ever going to "see" scientifically unless different owners put it on a chassis dyno. Nevertheless, they wouldn't have done so if it made no difference.

If you got into a 2015 5.0 you would finally understand.

Speaking of differences between gen 1 & 2. The AC is fantastic compared to the mediocre system in gen 1 and will freeze you out. The cooled seats actually got my family jewels over chilled on the way back from work wearing a pair of jeans so it is really working well. The cabin is so much more quiet it stands out considerably, amazing piece of work. Suspension is improved considerably as well as the overall handling and ride in general. In fact there is not one thing I have found yet that I preferred in the Gen1, tip of the hat to Hyundai for a major achievement.
