  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I posted this under pet peeves but figured I'd create a new post as well. In designing the Genesis, it appears the widest point of the body (excluding fenders) occurs where the front and rear doors meet. Though this may make the production of the sheet metal easier, and perhaps cheaper, it creates an optics issue with highlighting and shadows, particularly with a metallic paint like platinum which almost behaves like a pearl it's so luminous. The shade range that this paint produces is gorgeous, but since the plane break occurs at the junction of the two doors, you often get the impression that the rear door paint is off just a shade, particularly in low light (early morning, early evening) and when viewed from an angle, since the width of the car increases right up to the rear edge of the front door, then immediately begins to trail off at the front of the rear door. At first I thought one of my doors had be repainted in the port prior to delivery, but I'm beginning to think it's a design flaw. Anyone else notice this?

Thanks. My wife says something similar. I'll admit it's a little crazy but at times it can be really noticeable. I'll take a photo and post it.

Didn't mean to be so curt. I'll go home and see if I can tell what you mean tonight. I can sympathize with you, because it's been about 14 years since I bot a new car and I am treating this thing like a rare Faberge Egg. It has a few nicks here and there from road debris, so I'm coming to peace with it. But I know it's only a matter of time until someone nails it in a parking lot. Till then it's just perfect.

You know what really annoys me is the cap for the tow hook access on the front bumper it looks like a different shade of white, but I know its just an illusion due to 2 dissimilar surface areas.

Picky, Picky, Picky!

^^ :D I am so!

Yesterday, I turned down a country road and met the mirror image of my platinum V-8 coming the other way. This is the first time I have observed a platinum on the road. The sight distance was so short that both myself and the other driver were open mouthed in surprise.

My take is that the platinum looks like a million dollars. I don't notice any subtle shadings of color.

Those gorgeous curves in the body work you are complaining about are NOT cheap to make. If you want to see some cheap body work, just stop by your local Cadillac dealer.

My platinum 4.6 has the highest grade body work and paint job that I've ever had on a car. From just an appearance standpoint, the car looks more expensive to me than the new E-class or a 5 series. It rivals the LS460 on fit and finish - that car has one gorgeous body.

i amy be partial because i own a Platinum but the car really looks good with that color. the lines of the car and the color really complement each other. Kinda like the classic grey/silver of the Mercedes

I think some of you may have misread my post. I was very complimentary of the paint job and there is no way I would spend 30k + on a car I did not like. It just strikes me as a little unfortunate that the highlight/shadow lines occur at a door seam. Manufacturers usually try to avoid such occurrences. Here are a couple of photos to illustrate my point.

You should how nice the lines are on my Satin White Pearl..talk about SEXY!! :D

I've noticed the "shading" on a couple of the platinum cars I looked at, but not the titanium.

I think what you are seeing is a reflection of the ground. In your pic, you are parked on asphalt. In front of the rear wheel, that curve is carrying the light car color. As is flattens out you can see it get very dark. I believe it is relecting back the dark asphalt it's parked on.

Try parking on a very bright or light surface and see if you get a different result.

Wow, it's very noticeable in those pictures. What I've learned from years of detailing cars is that your eyes deceive you. This is why it is very important to have proper lighting when detailing a car. Get a halogen lamp, from a hardware store or one from your home and shine it on the break between the front and back doors. If the paint is mismatched it will be clear as day to you when you put 500W-1000W halogen light on it.
This is a stretch, but I noticed that when I was buying a touchup pen from the dealer, the Platinum metallic and the Titanium Metallic were pretty darn close. Is it possible that they put some titanium rear doors on your platinum....not likely, but look on page four of this spec sheet and you will see 3 colors that looks darn close to each other. Hope that helps...

So maybe I'm not so crazy after all. I actually found a photo from another members gallery that appears to show something very similar. Not quite as pronounced, but visible just the same. I really think it maybe a design issue since it appears on both sides. I have a very strong halogen light bar I use for lighting outside at night that I'll shine on the car later, though I seriously doubt that both rear doors were painted. As far as different colored doors being put on the car, it's a stretch. The color is actually a match under bright natural light, particularly when the sun is high over head. Furthermore I was told by a Hyundai Genesis rep that the car is actually assembled, then dipped to apply the paint which would preclude a mismatch. I'm taking it to the dealer on Monday to have the service manager take a look. Step 1 in my inquiry with Hyundai USA.
