R-Spec Magnaflow Exhaust

I just got off the phone with a Magnaflow exhaust technician. As of right now it appears they are the only ones considering a cat back system for the R-Spec. Obviously I could be wrong. Regardless, below is a link to the R-Spec page in their website. Even if you're not interested in one of their systems perhaps you would consider going to the below page, find the "check availability" section and tap it. A small box will pop up. If you type in your e-mail address it will show Magnaflow the amount of interest in a system for the R-Spec as well as giving you updates on it's progress. Even if you don't drive an R-Spec please consider helping out. The tech said it takes 1-2 months to develop a kit.

Question -- why not just replace the factory mufflers with Magnaflow mufflers? Why does a person have to buy the whole catback system? Just curious as I just bought an R-Spec and considering replacing the mufflers.

Great question Steve-

There are pro's and con's to either way. I had magnaflow mufflers put on and new exhaust tips, this was prior to any company making a cat back system. By the time you add the cost of the parts plus the installation, you could spend a little bit more and get the entire MagnaFlow system (cat back) which has manderal bends (no kinks) and it bolts right on with no welding required. In other words if you like to get under a car, you can save the installation cost with the cat back system. I spent about $350 out the door, includes mufflers and tips plus installation. For another $180 including shipping, I could have bought the cat back system if it were available. This is all assuming that the mufflers I purchased haven't increased in price in the last couple of years.

If you don't want to do any work yourself, an exhaust shop probably would charge around $100 at most to install the cat back system.

I emailed magnaflow about 2 weeks ago and they said that the catback system for the Rspec is in engineering. They also said that it normally takes 3-6 months until it will be done. I think the cost will be quite a bit more than you think. The last time I checked the 4.6's system it was $900+. I may just have to go the muffler route too. I wonder if they will even develop one. Is the 4.6 exhaust that much different? The only thing that sucks with having a limited production car is weak aftermarket.

I don't believe it will price out at $900. Is this the MSRP from "retail" price? The cat back for 4.6 retails for $962 on MagnaFlows site, but at http://www.performancepeddlerwholesale.com/ it was previously listed with shipping included for $532.

I must have seen that price on the Magnaflow site. That makes me feel a little better. I still have my doubts on whether or not they will actually make it. Has anybody seen if the 5.0 exhaust differs at all from the 4.6? I also wonder how they will do the tips?

This is just my opinion, but the car would look fine without tips coming from the outlets on the mufflers since the rear facia has the fake tips built in. I would be willing to bet the kit for the 4.6 would fit the R Spec, just without tips......

I guess I don’t have enough patience to wait for the Magnaflow catback system for my 2012 R-Spec 5.0. I went to my local custom exhaust shop today and had the Magnaflow mufflers installed. So far, so good. I believe it is a bit quieter than my 2010 Genesis 4.6 catback system because from what I understand the resonator is still in-line on my 2012. My exhaust tech said it can come off if it is too quiet. Opinions?
I have to admit I have bad hearing so I will have to wait for my mechanic son to come and visit to get his opinion. He really liked the sound of the 2010 Magnaflow system I had installed a year ago on the 4.6L. Let’s see what he has to say.

For those of you who like the old (1960’s) muscle car “throaty” sound I have a suggestion for you. What I did, per my previous post, was have the stock mufflers of my 2012 R-Spec 5.0 removed and replaced with Magnaflow mufflers - it sounded quite a bit quieter than my 2010 Genesis 4.6 with the Magnaflow catback system installed. So, I went back to my local custom exhaust shop and had him remove the resonator and that did it! Perfect! Throaty but not overbearing at all!
Bottom line is, in my opinion, you don’t have to buy the full catback system (if it ever becomes available for the 5.0) – just replace the OEM mufflers with Magnaflows and remove the resonator. It is awesome if you like to hear those 429 ponies!

OK, Folks. Gotter done. 2012 Genesis R-Spec 5.0L OEM mufflers removed and replaced by Magnaflow mufflers. Resonator removed too. Personally - I REALLY like it. The sound in the cabin is minimal but from outside it sounds great!

Sounds good! I also have the magnaflow mufflers on the 5.0, but I kept the resonators on. How is the drone? Mine is bad at times, especially under load at low RPMs. I am wondering if the drone would be less w/o the resonators? You do seem to get less raspiness with them on from what I can tell with your video. Either way they sound Bad Ass!

I applaud you exhaust mod. I think if you put your resonater back on your exhaust would sound MUCH cleaner. Even though MagnaFlow mufflers are legal the raspy exhaust note isn't in most states. This is my constuctive critisism. I also think you would also get a deeper tone and sounds more controlled with the resonator on, but you can always make any changes once you get accustomed to your exhaust. Thanks for the feedback, guys. I actually did have the resonator on for a while but it was MUCH quieter than what was on the video - I would say about 75-80% quieter. And I didn't notice a drone during that time. That being said, these are relatively loud but it seems to me not much of it comes into the cabin at all - it (the sound) is mostly from the rear of the car.
I believe the camcorder caused more of that raspy sound that it is in real life. All in all, I am very satisfied with it! I love my R-Spec!

Great Thread. Thank you. Love the sound and videos. On a Technical perspective, aftermarket (whether just perf mufflers or the cat-back), it the car faster? Trying to pick up those 0.10 in 0-60 and 1/4 mile.
