If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

For what it's worth.....I did my best to break in the car as the manual says. It directed one to keep the RPMs between 2000-4000 the first 600 miles. The only way to do that in city traffic is to use the manual mode and one would rarely see above 4th gear at speeds under 40mph. Unfortunately I discovered that the up or down shifting takes upwards of a full second after moving the lever. My little old Sonata turbo I traded on the R-Spec was nearly instantaneous. Regardless, if someone wants to make some money and has the knowledge and ability one should consider making a "Chip" for the transmission. I'm told transmissions have their own ECUs.(?) The 4.6 V8 I test drove seemed to have the same problem. Forgive me, I'm just complaining out loud but the silly thought came to my little old brain.

I would try this now that the car is broken in.

Disconnect the battery for about 15 mins then reconnect.
Drive the car like you stole it and see if it shifts better. The transmission learns your driving habits and if you drove it like a granny for the first 600 it might be shifting for economy and comfort vs. performance. Give it a shot.

There is a separate removable transmission ECU on the old six speed made by ZF. Hyundai claims to make the new eight speed in-house, but I suspect it has much of the ZF technology under license, and probably has a removable ECU.
Consider a SprintBooster at about $325. It really brightens throttle response.

Rey,
Just had an online chat with a gent from Sprint booster, a Mr. Racine. I understand the concept of changing parameters for drive by wire. However, he said a Sprint Booster would NOT help the manual shifting slowness.
Thanks again.

Your source at SprintBooster is correct in that SprintBooster will not quicken shifts. It will hasten throttle response making your throttle much less sluggish.
I had the SprintBooster on my 2009, and liked it so much that I installed it on my 2011.

ZF may be reserving faster/harder shifts to its dual clutch transmission line. My guess is that any tuning of the Hyundai transmissions will unavailable from any source. It may be possible to swap ECU-valve bodies s from other applications, but that is an iffy and expensive proposition.

Did an online chat, again, with the Sprint Booster folks. Current device not tested yet on an R-Spec. They said they'd advise me when available but gave no date.

Im calling Hyundai corporate next week to find out if and when a software update is coming for the 5.0 R Spec

Dragon,
Rey convinced me to buy a Sprint Booster. I did, although I bought the one for an automatic transmission rather than manual as he suggested. Regardless, try one and put it the sport mode. I think you'll like it.

believe me - I will try it :)

I am jut hoping that Hyundai recognize they have an issue with the transmission - and opt to fix it AS THEY SHOULD ;)
my thoughts : 1. sprint booster
2. software upgradefor the 8 speed
3. engine software if available
4 highflow intake system
5. freeflow exhaust
6 headers - maybe - if the cost is right )

* if this is a "learning" transmission - it must have the IQ of a 2 week old baby sloth :(

car is too slow to react to my right foot

except the brakes - they work just fine :D

Dragon,
The Sprint Booster, besides making the throttle much more responsive, seems to hold the transmission in 1st gear a little bit longer than without it. Prior to the install the car up shifted out of 1st almost instantaneously unless one had a considerable amount of throttle angle applied. Also down shifts, sometimes two gears, are extremely quick. Don't forget to get the manual transmission type. Just did a 600 mile road trip. No difference in highway mileage. Around town it seems to have cost me 1-2 miles per gallon.(?)

Skywagon,

I took the car out this weekend and I think I see or feel what youre talking about.

Also there is a bit of a lag from a standstill to completely floored pedal to the medal response. Not much I can do about that. Im pretty sure I wont be racing any kids in da hood. :D

Seattle,
Recently, before the Sprint Booster install, the time to up shirt has become considerably less when using the manual mode. Is the adaptive mode learning? Maybe? I wonder if turning off the traction control might make a difference?

I've noticed that too - it is faster

but the car picks and chooses it's gears

on more than one ocassion - it jumped from 3rd to 5th - ithout me wanting it too

I keep having to downshift - fighting this "learning " transmission every step of the way

it still doesn't like to berushed - and i am losing patience with it

most of the time - i just drive it in normal DRIVE

After 3500km, I was a little frustrated with the manual shifting. Then I decided just to use it in full auto mode. My drive is about 90% highway so it is crusing at 130km/h all day but that other 10% involves mashing the throttle from time to time. What I've experienced is that it does eventually learn to hold the gear when you lift up a bit (say in mid turn) where it didn't do this before. I'm used of driving a stick so it will never be as good as doing it yourself but I'll take the tradeoff in exchange for the 429hp.

well you must have a correctable problem with your transmission. get dealer to look at it. as i have previously stated i use "sport mode" a lot and manual/auto shifts are rapid and almost instantaneous. AND i have not seen any esc/tc interference as yet! i seldom use 1st gear tho, at stop light i select 2nd gear and it goes to 60 mph in a "blink"! in short, i love it... course my mileage really sucks but don't care.
