  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Rattle at Startup

Ok....the help number at Hyundai was bullshit. No help what so ever. They "documented" what i said and then called back days latter to say they stand by what the engineer said after the tensioner change, that it was acceptable. Well, after sitting for 3 days it rattled again. I told the dealer they were getting it back because it is not fixed, but the engineers are on vacation due to thanksgiving! The plan is to deliver to the dealer, after 4 days when the engineers get there, we all are present on start up! My belief is.....they WILL understand they are WRONG and it's not fixed! Will update soon.

Uh oh, I just cranked up the car after it sat in the garage a few days, and it came to life with a horrible clattering and an exhaust smell like spray paint. Now, it has had a clatter for a few seconds on start up ever since I bought the car with 3500 miles on it, but it always abated and ran perfectly.

This morning, the clatter has not gone away, and I can feel a bit of a shake coming through the whole car. So, I'm off to the dealer to find out what has gone wrong.

Now we have a 4.6 acting up?

I have a 4.6 with 113,000 miles. It recently sat parked at the Atlanta airport for 7 days. Started up completely normal. I think it would be worthwhile to find out the history of the cars with the problem regarding the production dates, oil filters used, frequency of oil changes, car parked on level ground or hill, oil level at time the problem occurred, oil consumption history, ECM updated or not, and if car had ever been in a severe lightning storm with very near strikes. Maybe Hyundai is doing this and compiling the data.

In the past two weeks I've visitors from out of town. One in a loaded 2012 Santa Fe and the other in a loaded 2012 Kia Sorento. I was standing next to each when they were stated and both made a horrible lower end knocking sound on start up. If my R-Spec made such a noise, I guaranty that a new engine would be in my car's future.

Update:

The clatter did abate after the car idled for about 10 minutes, and by the time I got to the dealer, the engine had quieted down and I could just barely hear a slight knock, although the service writer could not. They did not have any loaner cars available, so as soon as they get one, I am going to put it in the shop and let it sit there a few days, and then they will crank it up and listen to the clatter. As of now, the engine will clatter on start up if it sits for any length of time, but the car seems to run perfectly after it idles a minute or two.

I checked the oil level, and it is perfect, and the oil has been changed regularly. I did use Mobil 1 synthetic the first time I had the oil changed, but after reading here on this board that synthetic was not necessary if you get it changed regularly, I have used the 5W-20 house oil of the place where I get the oil changed. (BTW, the engine clattered for a few seconds on start up with the synthetic oil as well.) They say it is a synthetic blend. I have also used the oil filters they have there.

I will post an update after I find out something from the dealer.

So you have no idea of what oil filter has been used and if any were crushed from being the wrong filter or installed incorrectly. There have been issues with some aftermarket oil filters regarding the Genesis. Sometime back Hyundai sent a TSB to their dealers regarding oil filters and engine noise. I have only used OEM filters made by Mahle. Having owned Mercedes and BMW I found that some aftermarket canister filter elements don't fit correctly and therefore I only use OEM mfg. filters.

Good info, but I noticed this clattering on start up shortly after I bought the car, and it only had 3500 miles at that point. Could a bad oil filter have caused problems so fast?

Here is a example of what can happen when not using OEM filter. collapsed

Wow, interesting. It seems they would not be allowed to sell those if they collapse like that. Rest assured, my next filter will be OEM.

Here is an example of my experience with my Mercedes E500. Note the OEM filter mfg. by Mann for Mercedes on the right not collapsed.

Well since my car got hit the other day I've been driving my truck. The car sat for 4 or 5 days in cold weather up here in MA. When she cranked over the engine knocked for 30 seconds or so then quieted down. First time that has happened to me. I got my last oil change at Sears so I'm sure they used aftermarket crap.

My car is at the shop getting fixed so I can't diagnose or tinker around with it.... bummer.

Additional update:

As I've driven the car since the above post, the engine has not clattered much at start up, and the car seems to run perfectly. But it was time for an oil change and check this out from my post on the aftermarket oil filter thread:

For the last few months, I have been getting my oil changed at a place here by the name of Time It, who bought out all the local Super Lube locations. They have been using whatever their house brand of oil filter is.

I just had my oil changed today and attached are pics I just took of the filter they removed from the car. As you can see, it is collapsed on one side and there is a hole going into the inside of the filter.

Based on comments in another thread here about engine clatter on start up, I went to the Hyundai dealer and bought an OEM oil filter, which I had them install today when they did the change.

After looking at some of the posts in this thread, I now wonder if I did the right thing by going with the OEM filter. Is there a best brand filter I can use which won't collapse? Thanks for any help.

Guys - as a prior "Rattle at Startup" victim, please, please, have your phones on every morning when you start the car up, and video it. Because notoriously, it won't do it at the dealer. :) I emailed my dealer a weeks worth of startups, so they could see what I see. Really proved my issue.

Update(good news):

Having gone with the OEM oil filter at my last oil change, I had to leave my car at the airport for six days in February for a business trip. The car sat there at the airport in sometimes freezing weather the whole time.

Because of the terrible clatter that occurred after the car sat in my garage for several days over the Christmas holidays, I was very apprehensive about cranking the car after six days sitting outside in the cold. However, when I cranked the car this time, there was no clatter--it cranked up exactly like it does when being driven regularly.

Therefore, I can only assume that that poor oil filter that developed the hole in it had some culpability in the knocking that occurred after that Christmas hiatus. Rest assured, I will be using the OEM filter going forward.

Thanks for the feedback. That is very good to know.

....was wondering if the clatter that you were experiencing has remained a thing of the past.

What was the part# for the filter you used? White paper cap or black plastic caps?

My 3.8 v6 has done exactly the same. What was the issue? I'm worried about this ride!
