Rear seats are getting cold air, not heated air

I love my 2010 Genesis, but living in Florida I seldom get to use the heater.

Well, temperatures fell to a record breaking level this week (January 4, 2010), and suddenly I'm using my heater instead of my A/C.

Guess what, the heater works wonderfully (nice even heat, no drafts, quiet, etc.) but the rear seats are getting C-O-L-D air, not heated air.

Does anyone know a fix for this? (I will go to the dealer to get it fixed, but... I prefer to know what I'm in for before I give him the car).

ps. I've got an automatic climate control system - you set the temp you want (ie, 78 degrees), and the computer automagically maintains that temperature.

BocaDave: I've noticed that too the other day. I'm in the same boat as you living in Orlando with the temperatures. Anyway, I happen to reach back to see if the air was warm and it was cold. I think it is not something they are going to fix. It has it's own hot/cold selector and nothing from the front controls it (that I know of). I would either close the vent back there or slide the dial to heat. If the dealership service center does do anything, please provide feedback; I'd be curious as to what they say.

I haven't had that problem as I'm in Fort Lauderdale. We used the back seat heater quite a bit while in Boston last week. The main system took 2-3 minutes to start heating up the air. The center back heating fan when turned on properly gave the back area IMMEDIATE heat with in seconds. Check the controls as it may help.


It worked so well so fast my back seat passengers had to adjust the heat downward within5 minutes because it was getting to warm even in single digit weather.

I find that funny because many of us with early Genesis' had very high HEAT come out that center vent, even with the A/C on. In my case, the left side adjustment back there would rotate by itself off the cold to heat. Rather than taking it to my dealer, I just wedged a small piece of cardboard, from a match book between the adjustment wheel and the edge of the housing. Can't even see the cardboard, unless you look for it. Now, in the summer, with a/c on, it stays cold, not switching to hot by itself. Even though I've been driving with my heat on lately, I forgot to check if the air coming out that rear center vent is hot or cold. If still cold, I will just leave it there, and shut the vent off with the other adjustment wheel back there.

As for the other rear vents in the "B" piller, I don't know about them, but I assume that the temperature is automatic as it works from under the dash, just like the air that comes out from the lower (heater) vents and the middle (a/c) vents. These vents can also be shut off.

Between the cold snap here in Florida, or the COLD when I was in NM and TX last month, the car stayed nice and warm, even though I never checked those three vents.

Looks like my car's going to spend a nice long day or two in the dealer's repair shop while undergoing this fix.

How do you learn all this stuff???

Not getting heat to center rear seat vent ,only happens when its cold. When dealer pulls car inside to work on it it work because temp is 70.They keep telling me there is nothing wrong. I tried to download the pdf above but it comes up blank. Can anyone help me.

This may sound stupid, and if it is, I'm sorry - but have you checked the dial on the rear HVAC? There are two: I believe the one on the left controls the airflow speed, and the one on the right controls the temperature. This threw me off the first time, because I thought they were for right and left airflow - but one is indeed temperature...

I checked the controls the dealer checked the controls,its not the controls.

rear seat heat problem fixed

It took two trips and 5 days total to get this problem fixed. I downloaded the PDF above and gave it to them. They followed it but that did not fix problem. The regional service manager came out and the problem was the control module(the on off and temp wheels) it comes all together with the rear vents. They replaced it and I now have hear in the center rear vents.

I had this problem on my 2009 Genny that I just purchased and brought it in and got a new rear control unit (100% warranty) and all seems to be working well.

Yesterday while driving in warm weather with the AC on, I kept feeling a warm draft and couldnt figure out where it was coming from, until I reached back and felt that vent. I adjusted the hot/cold dial up and down several times and no change, just hot air, so I closed the vent. I got to my destination, went for a bike ride, and on the drive home it was now blowing cold AC air. I didnt touch it again.

I have this problem on my 2009 v8 tech. Is the problem just replacing the switch? For me, the A/C is not working but the heat is working for the backseat. And I noticed the switches aren't working as well, I cannot turn off the air with the switch or change the temp. I can only turn it off by turning on the A/C to lowest temp and it won't work in the back.

Sounds like normal operation. Your rear unit zone was set to heat. It operates independently of the two front zones. Many folks don't realize this and the manual does not mention it. When you changed the dial setting it just took a while for it to blow cool air after being in the heating mode. Rear seat passengers can fiddle with these dials, so it's a good idea to check them yourself to ensure that the rear zone is not combating the front zones.
