  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I am original owner of 2012 Genesis 3,8 with 119,000 miles. All routine recommended service has been done by the dealership. I noticed fluid on the garage floor in the rear area of the car and took it to dealer. The pinion seal is leaking where the drive shaft connects to the differential and the dealership gave me two options. Replace the seal for 800 or replace the differential for 2,500. They said the seal replacement may or may not make noise because of mileage. I would like to keep the car for a couple more years however I understand as the age of the car goes up the failure of parts also goes up. What are your recommendations or suggestions as any help would be appreciated.

I'd get a quote from a good independent shop for the seal.

Get a salvage diff. We put over 220,000 miles on our Genesis and no diff. leaks or any other oil leaks. The rear diff did develop a lot of lash after 200,000 miles and that is one reason we traded it in.

Thanks for taking the time to offer suggestions.

+1 on getting another quote. $800 for a seal replacement sounds steep. I just looked at mine recently for another issue and it doesn't look like a tough job to do.
I would not replace the whole differential, just replace the seal and swap in some new differential fluid.

I agree with hero6 just replace the seal and diff fluid and call it good!

a pinion seal requires a complete disassembly of the differential, as the pinion gear itself as to be removed. that also means on reassembly pinion depth, backlash, bearing preload, etc all need to be adjusted correctly. it's a small, simple seal that requires a good amount of work unfortunately

Wow ! It is that in depth. Not as easy as remove yoke and remove seal reinstall seal, reinstall yoke?

it could potentially be done that way but there is a one time crush sleeve on there that helps preload the pinion bearings which may or may not provide enough preload after removing the yoke from the pinion, also at a minimum you'd have to reset pinion depth.

Not bad, given the labor involved. If done properly, then an excellent value for $$$.
