Wow...that's a pain! The Genesis dealership destroyed my old tires while I was waiting to get them mounted - a truck drove over them. So they replaced all 4 tires with new ones. Makes you wonder what goes on in the service bays out back...
Holy crap! That sounds unreal!
Well this has been an absolute nightmare. Finally got my wheels on last night. I took the time to pressure wash each
wheel well from winter crud, clean the components, cleaned the brakes and put a coat of
ceramic on them. Side note, anyone else notice how much dirt those damn
wheel well liners hold? I swear, even with my pressure washer about 1.5" from the liner, I had to spend a good 10 mins on each before I stopped seeing a significant amount of dirty water coming off them. Brutal!
Wheels are gloss black but machined face with a tinted clear, so the pattern and design stands out. I was looking for a muted look, but as I have stated many a time on this forum, solid black is not my thing because of lack of definition unless within 20 ft and vehicle not moving. The tinted clear is a good match with the tinted trim along the windows. Not exactly the same tone but it works. i was trying to avoid total
chrome delete...not looking for that total stealth look either. Wheels themselves are just under 20lbs each, Rotary forged.
And happy to say that my offset calculations worked out perfectly. I went with +32, 21 x9, and the tire has a very slight poke at the front (about 1/8", which is what I was expecting) and the back is very close to flush. Looks perfect and with the slightly wider tires, it has a nice aggressive stance.
The Fast spline nuts supplied are perfect in every way, length, quality of finish (gloss black) and the key easily fit in the
wheel without making contact inside the lug bore holes. Tip - in order to prevent accidental scratching or dings, I wrapped some Gorilla black duct tape around the key so there is about 1/16" past the end, that way, if I accidentally tap the face of the
wheel when putting it in, contact is with the tape, not the end of the key...thus no ding, 'cause I have never done that before :-| . And just long enough not to interfere with the key going over the lug. Works like a charm.
Anyway, I digress. So, got my wheels on and went for a drive. All seemed to start well, then got up to some speed. At around 55 kms/hr, start to hear a faint drone, which increases in pitch as I go faster. At 80-85 kms, very noticeable and loud, higher pitch, and over 110 a little ridiculous. Also have a vibration at 70 kms and over 110 kms/hr. But I did not notice in the steering which may mean it is isolated to the rear wheels/tires. Given both issues, there is a decent chance that one of the tires may in fact be defective, according to BlackCircles.ca, which is where I bought them. I would be surprised if a balance issues because the shop uses a Hunter Road Force balancer. One of the best. In fact, that was a must when choosing the shop to install. If anyone has experience in these sort of things, input is appreciated.
The shop that installed said they will have a look, so have to bring car back there so they can take a look again at the balance of the
wheel, and the tires themselves. If the tires, I have to file a claim with Black Circles.ca and likely pay the shop more $$ to reinstall and balance. What a royal pain in the buttox.
I was worried degradation in ride quality, which is why I upsized to a 265/40/21 from stock 255/40/21. I was hoping that the slighty taller sidewall would give me a bit more cushion. i also chose a Touring tire rather than a performance tire...touring are designed for better ride quality. At my age, the days of "spirited" driving are long past. Result? while you do feel bumps slightly more, I am extremely happy with the ride quality. No where near the jarring impacts I was concerned I would feel over bumps. The bonus of upsizing? The variety of tires available increases significantly, the costs are significantly less than stock size. Yes, speedo is slightly off, but had an speedometer app on my phone this morning comparing my HUD speed with it constantly, and only noticed on the highway where they were off by about 1 km per hr. Obviously the app is not perfect, but still provides a good idea.
Crappy weather for over a week and a half here, so once we get a stretch of decent weather, I will give it a clean and post some pics somewhere on this forum.
I think the last mod I am going to do at this point is paint the muffler tips black. Not a fan of the stainless being so prominent from the rear given my
badges are blacked out.
Sorry for the long post.
