If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Ridiculously low MPG on GV70. Anyone knows why?

Hi friends I’m a new 2023 GV70 owner and after a few weeks driving around I noticed that my average MPG is ridiculously low - between 8-10 and my full tank only last for about 140-150miles in total. I wonder if you guys know any possible cause (perhaps I did something wrong) or it is still normal?

My GV70 is 3.5T sports prestige and I know it is supposed to consume quite a lot of gas. But 8-10 MPG is hardly making any sense for a compact SUV even though most of my mileage is in city roads.

For further information:
1) I drove in comfort mode
2) I seldom use AC, never used seat heating/cooling
3) Didn’t play music at all

Anyone has the similar issue as I do? Thank you for your advice

I have a 2.5 Advanced Plus model and I average around 21 mpg (11 ltr per 100Km). I have driven only around 750 Kms so far and mostly within the city. I try to not go beyond 2500 rpm and I haven’t tried the sport mode yet. I have driven in same conditions like you (no AC or heated or cooled seats).

You might find more people discussing on this topic in different threads and people have given tips to optimize the fuel economy. The first few thousand Kms it is not ideal to measure the car’s fuel economy. Especially this car because it leads the way you operate the car - like how hard you are trying to accelerate, brake, up shift or down shift (if you are using paddle shifters), etc.

I would say go through the other threads and give it some time.

Would help to have a bit more information. If this is for trips of a mile or less and sitting in the drive thru line for a coffee it is not so bad. If it is longer tips, some back roads cruising, yes, it is terrible.
AC uses minimal gas, heated seats and listing to music uses none.

There should be a setting on the gauges that will give a reading for the instant MPG. What do you get on an easy ride at a steady pace?

Thank you my friend. I will give it some more time to show. In the meanwhile I let my dealer have this car checked.

Thank you my friend. It is for daily commute/grocery shopping (3-5miles each trip, less than that I prefer a bike) mostly with a mixing of a few longer test run trips (mainly on interstate roads). I never had drive-through for food/coffee yet with this car. I reset the MPG meter every trip but every time it ended at 8-10 after the trips. The total mileage for a full tank also fell into this zone (17.4 gallon for 140-150 miles).

Maybe my setting for the car is more gas consuming, or maybe something is wrong with my engine? I am not sure but I will have it checked by my dealer

I wouldn't reset the MPG meter every trip but for every fill up. Sounds like your trips are very inefficient with a lot of acceleration, stopping, accelerating again with minimal holding at a speed for a period of miles. I have the 2.5 Adv. and I get a steady 24-25mpg on every fill up but that is over 300 miles with a mix of back roads and highway.

Tank capacity is only 15.8 gal.

Take a nice ride, about 20, 30, miles or more and see what you get. The short trips are a killer, especially in cold weather.
When I lived in CT, I'd sometimes go to the grocery store 2 miles away. On the way to the store it would be 8- -10, but with it warmed up a bit the trip home would be 12+. A few minutes on the highway at 65 pops it to over 20. Long highway trips at 80 mph gets me 27.

Your 5 mile trip seems low but it will be in any car. Take a nice ride, enjoy the sun and watch the numbers to see if they are better. They should be considerably.

Does tank size vary by country? I'm in the USA and normally I fill up with 1/4 tank left and put in about 12 gallons. Three times my onboard computer has stated I dropped below 50 miles remaining with my 3.5 Sport Prestige and those times the fill-ups took 16.187 gallons, 15. 532 gallons and 15.588 gallons. I would have thought I still had about 2 gallons left.

Good question (I wouldn't think so). The Google (and Genesis) says it's 15.8, at least for the US.
Weird, I just googled it and it shows differently. Also as shown on EPA MPG mine is undercut by half, at least.

Thank you, sir for the explicit advice. Cold weather should not be the issue as I live in DC/MD/VA area and these last few weeks are still suffering from summer heat. But I got what you mean and I will take some longer trips/smooth rides and see if it improves.

Also does driving mode affects the gas MPG significantly? Like what is likely the difference between ECO, comfort, sport mode?

Everything I looked at said 17.4 gallons or 66 litres...the manual, several websites, etc.

Sport mode could cost you a couple of mpg as it changes the shift points and keep you in a lower gear longer. ECO softens the pedal so you won't get the jackrabbit starts. Mine does not have comfort.

You do live in an area with a lot of traffic, especially at rush hour. I take a 1400 mile ride a couple of times a years and really don't like passing the DC area. I'll be passing there next Tuesday.

Actual MPG differs by driver and driving style and has many factos such as tire pressure, outside temp, quality of fuel, etc. If you are seeing 8-10 mile per gallon that insane and I'd love to see a picture of it showing a drive of more than 3-4 miles. I'm curious if you are sitting in stop and go traffic and doing some really hard accelerations.

Even doing hard accelerations on my way to the grocery store (4 miles away) I've never seen my 3.5 GV70 drop below 15-16 MPG for that short trip. If I accidently cruise on the way back without hitting stop signs I can't get it below 20 MPG. If you are driving in comfort mode and actually seeing those numbers you either need the a fix of something crazy the dealer should be able to pinpoint or you need to adjust where you buy your fuel and your VERY heavy foot.

BTW. Listening to music, running the AC, using the seat heaters/cooler, having the headlights on, etc technically uses fuel at the tiniest of levels but not enough that you would ever notice or be able to measure it via MPG.

Oops. Sorry. What a difference a V makes. 🙄

My GV70 3.5 is averaging 21.7 mph in 35 mile one-way primarily rush hour which 50% of that is stop and go traffic. I Can’t complain. Sounds like something might be wrong with yours.

If You're getting 8-10mpg, I'd suggest trading it in for a Dodge Charger Hellcat... It gets about the same gas mileage, but it will get you anywhere faster than your GV70 :gathering:

You don't have to reset your fuel gage every time. Scroll to the next screen and it'll give you the fuel consumption info etc from your last ignition start. The main screen for fuel will give you accumulated consumption from last fuel up (which you reset after full tank fill up). Can't add much more to what others have said. I think in your case it's all the short trips of only a few miles. The highest consumption is during those trips of 0-2 miles when the engine is cold and all city driving.
