Rspec on Dyno today

..and you definitely don't want to mess with one of the 2012 300C/SRT8's...
Stock is 411 whp!

Here's a MPH/WHP chart with the Speed Limiter set to only 115MPH and the ESC still on! (courtesy of TheWeeklyDriver)

Re: Rspec Dyno: MSA Cat Deletes vs stock & 1st Rspec CAI by ABEL Racing!

ABEL Racing on Dyno Jet 224. Midwest City, OK
MotorSportAuthority cat deletes

all stock: 328hp at wheels, 313 torque

MSA cat deletes with stock mufflers & 2 stock cats: 342.70 Wheel Horsepower, 320 torque

Viagra Cold Air Intake...with stock mufflers and 4 cats... 344hp at wheels. Do to great results, we are working on a CAI right now....... Test shows the great potential we have with a good CAI set up. WOW!

We did it!
ABEL Racing Cold Air Intake with MSA cat deletes & stock mufflers & 2 stock cats: 354whp, 328 torque

You will not believe the video. Sound is amazing at WOT...deep throaty V8 muscle.

I highly recommend the MSA cat deletes. Proven 14-15hp gain at wheels.

The ABEL Racing CAI adds another 15hp at wheels and sounds amazing!!! 30whp gains at end of day!!!!!!!
If there is any interest on this forum, please PM me.

Thanks for the info :) - gonna look into the MSA cat deletes and can't wait for MagnaFlow to put out their catback exhaust ( hopefully in the spring )

Inside line had the R Spec pegged at around 424hp on the dyno Stock

I figure with the MSA cat deletes and a MagnaFlow CatBack Exhaust - the Horsepower will jump a bit.

On to the subject of "Cold Air " intakes............

I'm not entirely sure your gonna get those HP gains with a setup like the one you are showing - in the heat of summer - along with the heat coming off the engine - your gonna suck in a ton of hot air - and that's gonna hurt your HP numbers a ton. It's more like a " Hot Air " intake :D

For now - I'm sticking with a K&N filter - till someone comes out with a
High Flow intake system that is sealed - to keep the hot air out - similar to what Dinan Engineering has -

They simply run an intake hose through the opening in the brake duct housing - ( of course we don't have a brake duct cooling outlet in the front bumper - which we SHOULD HAVE )

and a Cone style filter sits INSIDE the plastic flilter housing - so only cold air is pulled through the plastic hose - and not from the engine compartment.

It's actually a pretty simple mod - and works much better than these exposed open type air filters - there's less heat soak - and more power.

So for me - it will be:

MSA Cat deletes
MagnaFlow CatBack Exhaust
And a future highflow intake if available

Here's the question..............

How LOUD is this set up going to be ?!!!

Cat Deletes WITH a Catback Exhaust - is gonna wake the neighbors :D

FYI:
That's Crank HP, not Wheel HP.
You lose about 20% in the drive train.

TimC, great SRT8 numbers! Like you said, any street start race comes down to driver and I bet the SRT8 I ran was not an expert. However, it was go on green and in a straight line........something my grandmother could do. I am also a 20 year Porsche Club race veteran and I would run a Lamborghini if it was next to me. Because again, it's the driver that wins the race. :)

I liked my Dads SRT8, but his tranny went out after warranty at 37,000 miles and that same 5sp is in the new SRT8 for now. Perhaps our 8sp trans gave me a better launch??? Details like this put my choice for the Rspec in first....not to mention all the run of the mill 300's all over the place.

Thanks for the recognition Dragon64. I completely agree about your air box idea. Actually, many of those are available......except for our cars. I put one on my diesel truck. I would remind you our grill channels air to the CAI or stock airbox already drawing in cool air. When you take it apart, their is also a sleeve pulling air from the front grill directly to air box. Those channels are still in place. Run your finger behind your top edge of grill with hood open and you will feel/see it.

We did all this at the race shop and making a box will not be hard, but we did all this in a day. Wish the Dyno numbers were better, but at least the gains were direct before and after comparisons.

Looking for another Dyno at different shop this week to compare. In the meantime , my new V8 muscle sound is complete bliss and matches the car.

I'm certain with a MagnaFlow CatBack Exhaust WITH the MSA Cat Deletes - and a sealed high flow intake - you will see 450hp to the crank easily

Even if you go with a K&N filter for now - I still see a 20HP jump :D

It's unfortunate that there aren't any other mods available for the car.

I suspect mods won't arrive in force till after the NEXT generation R Spec sedan comes out.

There's not enough attention being drawn to the car as of yet - for tuners to take a serious look.

That will change by 2015 2016 when the new R Spec arrives:

If my sources are correct - the next R Spec sedan will be a monster

5.4 or 5.5 liter V8

10 speed auto with paddle shifters :)

Pushing at least 470- 480hp stock

It's coming :D

And the tuners will take notice.......

High Flow intakes WILL be available

More exhaust choices

Software.......

It's coming

Disagree on expectations that tuners will provide aftermarket equipment for the Genesis sedan. I think the market is too small. Motorsports Authority and Millen are the most likely vendors.
I think we are on our own to develop exhaust/intake. It is not all that difficult for anyone mechanically inclined.
Do experiment with intake configurations. One good measure is the differential between ambient air temp and intake air temp. We have a dash ambient air reading. A simple ScanGauge or equivalent hooking up to the OBD port will give you intake air temp. Reducing this differential provides simple free horsepower.
As for exhaust, do not expect any miracles from MagnaFlow or even Borla. I suspect any exhaust they produce will be very expensive and will be a minor modification of their existing exhausts for the 4.6. I have direct experience with the MagnaFlow on the 4.6. In its stock configuration it has a horrible drone at low rpm/high load. I was able to eliminate this drone only by using Dynomax VT mufflers.
I think one can do a nice exhaust using just the Dynomax VT mufflers at a fraction of the MagnaFlow price. I would do this myself, but this takes some clever exhaust work and my exhaust expert is now seriously ill. The problem with the Dynomax is they have a limited configuration selection.

Those Dynos suck. Here is a great Dyno.

Dyno.jpg

Only 600 lbs. and 38 miles to the gallon! Oh, I forgot. It tops around 212 mph.

Update: Feb 7th - new dyno with ESC OFF

357hp at the wheels today at a different shop...BUT THE SAME brand DYNO:confused: Dyno Jet

* Unplugged ESC per "ESC OFF Thread" and it worked!
* Did 4th gear pulls (3 times. Hot pull, 3rd try was best run with ESC off)
* Left Eco on???? Ugh! Not sure if it did anything, but cause shift sooner??

Best part was the race shop had not seen a Genesis Sedan before...much less an Rspec. He was shocked and quite impressed with the dyno numbers. The guys in the shop all came out when they heard it on the dyno and they all said, "What a sleeper that car is!" :D::D:D

Pics & vid coming.

I meant to post on this thread earlier: "moderator"

I ordered the electronic exhaust valves today. Will provide full open exhaust when flip the switch. Going to add just before the MSA cat deletes. Down tubes are included.

Will compete in Porsche Club Autocross just for grins and get some good video to post on this forum next month. Will try and get some in-car vid too.

How come this dyno and well written article pegs the RWHP at 364 and torque @ 342 and you guys can't even squeeze that with your modified version?. Both cannot be right however your loss from claimed 429hp at the crank to your actual figures are pushing 25% loss which is not normal. This article is much easier to believe IMHO with about 15% loss which was consistent over 12 runs. http://blogs.insideline.com/straightline/2011/06/dyno-tested-2012-hyundai-genesis-50-r-spec.html

Not sure I completely understand your question. I am a little bummed our Dyno numbers were not higher also. But, all things equal, I had a stock baseline and proved a 30 RWHP gain from stock and that Was the goal of our tests. My car may not be putting out as advertised from factory. Not concerned since I am getting more work done and we hope to adjust the fuel curve if possible.

I think he wants to know why your losses are so great. He, like I, am not doubting the consistency of your dyno. A "broken" dyno that is consistent is still good to test # gains. I am a little surprised with the numbers myself. When I saw the numbers I said to myself "obviously this is the 4.6".

I would expect a modded 4.6 to push 350HP and a modded 5.0 to push about 400HP.

It also depends, however, on elevation of your area. Relative humidity, temperature and all that. But if you're having consistent runs, then that is fine to measure HP gains from mods IMHO

Very nice! I envy you the exhaust cut-outs. I plan to add this mod sometime next year as budget allows.

On a related note - I went to my local exhaust shop to discuss options. They were thinking that simply removing the rear mufflers would make for a good sound. Apparently they are doing this with modern Lexi and MB's rather than doing more expensive cat-back systems.

So we tried it - they put her up on the rack and unbolted the rear mufflers (right after the resonator). We turned her on and the idle sound was more aggressive but not too loud. Then we hit the pedal and OH MAMA!. THAT is what a 5.0 should sound like! In the end it was too loud for me for everyday driving and CERTAINLY would not pass the wife test. However, with exhaust cut-outs it will be perfect! Quiet and luxurious for everyday driving but when you want it, you unleash the beast!

Cheers,
Newman

^^ Tell me you didn't take a video clip....

Many apologies. But in my defense I was awestruck. Dumbfounded. Flabbergasted!

For what it is worth, this is a simple exercise for any of us to repeat. Jack up the back of the car just a bit and unbolt the rear mufflers. You can leave them hanging. Then turn her on and let her rip!

Cheers,
Newman

Newman. Well said. The cut outs will allow that 5.0 sound and keep the wife happy on date night. I will post the vids. Is there a tuning thread for the Rspec yet? I want to adjust or reflash the ecu.

Love what you're doing with the car.
Not sure you will be doing any of the reprograming / fuel curve adjustments you mentioned in anoth post, any time soon. I waited on those kinds of mods with my '09 4.6; and they never came out. But one can hope; me included, now that I have a R-Spec.
If you do any more dyno pulls, please try it in 5th gear. 4th was correct on the 6 speed Tranny, but 5th is the 1:1 on the 8 speed.
Will keep watching to see if you guys solve the engine heat isolation, before I mod the intake tract.

Mark F.

I think the real value of chassis dyno pulls is to compare changes made to a particular vehicle.
Chassis dynos results will vary using a single car and different dynos, even with the same dyno brand. The only true comparison between two cars would be to test them on the same dyno on the same day.
Dynos where the motor is strapped to a test stand usually do not include a factory exhaust, simply because of size limitations of the typical dyno chamber. All the dyno chambers I have seen use a common large stationary exhaust system. An OEM factory will probably dyno test with full exhaust systems for emissions and mileage. The same factory's published hp rating is more likely to not include a full exhaust system.

I agree Ray. This is why I like my data so much. Each added mod was done same day on same Dyno before and after parts were added. I know the numbers did not exceed expectations on the Dyno I used, but I showed "true" 30hp gains at the wheels. I figure this puts me at 459hp!
