  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Seat belt warning

The car needed to be moved

To mis-Quote the Sergeant-Major from Monty Python:
"Right! Stop that! It's SILLY. Very SILLY indeed! Started off as a nice little idea about the stupidity of defeating safety-belt warnings, but now it's just got SILLY!"

Hey guys. Checking back in.

Just wanted to let you know I drove my car from one spot to another. I moved it probably 50 feet. There were other vehicles in the vicinity. I confess that I didn't put my seat belt on.

Thoughts?

Bored?

Yes, that's exactly what I'm doing (stirring the pot, fishing, trolling, etc...) but I still think I can get a couple of these old geezers to bite.

Many years ago I took a run up to the corner store 2 minutes away and on the way back left my seat belt off because "why bother".

Going around a corner at 30kph (19mph) I caught a patch of ice and slid into a parked car. I then quickly fled the sce...just kidding, at that slow a speed, I went forward and hit the steering wheel with my mouth. My tooth cut right into my lower lip and and caused a permanent numbness in my mouth. I was amazed at how easy it was to get injured at such a low speed.

That being said, I am pleasantly surprised at how unobtrusive the seat belt chime is compared to other vehicles I've driven.

LOl, am I the fish or the guy jumping in the water?

I should add, I do use my seat belt at all times but the reminder when I forget is a nice change from other vehicles I've driven.

I'm thinking you're the fish for "biting" - but the OP is the guy getting chased overboard (for resurrecting this thread) :)

Yeah, I should have probably read the whole thread first :o

To answer your question .....as far as I know, there isn't any "hidden steps" to do that in Genesis G1/G2, well....maybe there is, but no person in this forum is aware of it.

I don't care if you wear set belts or not, it's not my problem. ;)

Most of the auto deaths you see reported on TV end with the statement ..."and he wasn't wearing a seatbelt."
So says all the people you don't know someone who died because they COULDN'T undo the jammed seat belt after an accident and died as the car fire consumed them or the car sunk under the water. The media never reports on those cases, just like they never cover the stories where lives were saved or mass shootings prevented because of someone else carrying a weapon. But because its is the law, the family who lost the loved one cannot sue the car manufacture or government for the death due to broken seatbelt. And just because "report" says was not wearing seatbelt does not mean person's life would have been spared if he was wearing it. Today, airbags do everything and more to protect you during an accident rendering the seat belt all but useless. And magically, i have never worn a seatbelt in all 40 years of driving and somehow I've survived. But the thing is, when I test drove the G70, the warning didn't go off, so there must be a way to disable. Just bought mine yesterday, haven't been able to figure it out, but will call the dealer tomorrow to see if they can advise since they were able to turn it off in the model I drove test driving.

You do bring up an interesting point. Can you share the number of deaths due to belts that you do know about? Surely you have some facts we can base a decision on wearing or not. I'm very open minded and would like to get some facts about the danger you see so I can decide.

Things like this get in the way of straight thinking
A 1983 University of Michigan study (http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/251/2/48561.0001.001.pdf) found that the fear that seat belts might trap an occupant in a vehicle that caught fire or plunged underwater was the most frequently stated concern of Michigan drivers. However, a study of 1981 crash statistics by the university's Transportation Research Institute (attached, and available on-line at: http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/67129/2/10.1177_109019818401100205.pdf.) concluded that deaths from fires or drowning were relatively rare. Fires accounted for less than 3.6% of passenger car occupant deaths; drownings for 1.4% of occupant deaths
SEAT BELT INJURIES
They found that occupants who wore seat belts were more likely to be conscious after a crash than were those who were not wearing them. Only one of every 190 people who used a seat belt was unconscious, compared to one of every 78 occupants who did not wear one. The percentage of all non-belted occupants who were fatally injured was almost twice that of belted occupants.

How do you feel about the passenger behind you? If passenger is unbleted the risk of the driver death goes up quite a bit. Influence of the unbelted rear-seat passenger on driver mortality: "the backseat bullet". - PubMed - NCBI

Does the possibility of ejection concern you? Seems that increases risk considerably
Relative risk of death from ejection by crash type and crash mode. - PubMed - NCBI

found this too
Among drivers and front-seat passengers, seat beltsreduce the risk of death by 45%, and cut the risk of serious injury by 50%. Seat belts prevent drivers and passengers from being ejected during a crash. People not wearing a seat belt are 30 times more likely to beejected from a vehicle during a crash

As for the dealer, if he is smart he is going to tell you he is not allowed to give you that information. If nothing else, it would piss off his lawyer.

Looking forward to your information,

It’s always nice to meet somebody who knows more than the National Transportation Safety Board and similar organizations in every country on the Planet. Good luck disconnecting that ringy-dingy reminder chime.

Oh, you might want to learn about why airbags do not render seat belts obsolete.

Let me preface this by saying I'm a proponent for wearing seat belts. I wear mine 90% of the time.

With that being said, does anyone know how to disable the seat belt warning chime that dings when you don't have your seat belt on? Or at least point me in the direction of how to figure out how to disable it? I looked in the owners manual download that is available in one of the pinned threads up top but wasn't able to find anything regarding it.

In previous vehicles of mine it would say how to disable that noise in the owners manual. It was usually some sort of weird steps you had to do like, sit in car with seat belt on, turn on car, roll down window, take seat belt off, turn radio on then off, etc...
So I guess all of you hover around motorcycle blogs and forums and rant constantly about how no one should ride a motorcycle or especially when not wearing a helmet? you would if you were consistent and worried about others safety. But let me take a wild guess that none of you frauds do, because the same arguments you have put forth here would apply double to one riding a motorcycle, but you would have to think about an issue deeper than a 7 year old to realize that. But now you say, "well that's a person individual right and choice if they choose to ride a motorcycle knowing the risk" Exactly. As it should be with wearing a seatbelt. BTW, since it is the law, if you get in an accident not wearing your seat belt the insurance company can and most likely will deny injury claims, so don't worry, your rates wont go up and you or car manufactures will not get sued by us crazy non-belt wearing lunatics. So now you have to ask yourself, if the gov is really concerned with our safety, why do we have to wear seat belts but are also allowed to ride motorcycles without helmets in most states? The Fed intervenes in one case and ignores the other? so is it about safety or the insurance lobbies paying off politicians to protect their profits? gosh, which do you think? Either we have freedom of choice or we dont. Either it's our responsibility or it isn't. And all you geniuses who can't wait to do whatever the gov tells you without question, can any of you tell me where in the constitution it says the fed gov has the right to tell us to wear seat belts?

wow talk about reviving a dead thread.

I'm for freedom of choice, but I've also formed an opinion. My choice is to wear a seatbelt. I made this decision based on three things.
1. I was in an accident where the belt prevented more serious injury
2. My son is an EMT and has treated seriously injured or found dead people ejected in an accident
3. The statistics are overwhelmingly in favor of belts.

Now I also have an option of those choosing otherwise but will not give it on a moderated forum. But you should have freedom of choice.

Oh, my grandson got into an accident on his motorcycle last week. He was glad he was wearing a helmet., but again, you should have your choice.

I myself do NOT wear a seatbelt when: moving car from driveway to street, driving around my own property, moving from one parking spot to another, driving in parking garages, the last 50 ft before the car comes to a stop. Has my chance of fatality increased? YES! Maybe I hit a patch of ice backing my car out of garage and spin out hit a cement mixer, maybe as I am pulling out of a parking spot I get T-boned by a truck going 70mph, maybe the last 20 ft before the car comes to a stop the brakes fail and my car hits a wall at 5mph......BUT THE WALL CRUMBLED AND THE ENTIRE BUILDING COLLAPSED KILLING 500 MEN WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

I'll take my chances with the above. Same with the chances I take driving a car everyday, jogging in the afternoon WITHOUT full body armor, eating food WITHOUT sending it to CDC to check for known poisons!

All sarcasm aside, leave it to people's best judgement. The point of thread is to discuss how to disable the chime, not how you once forgot to put on a seatbelt whilst parked eating an ice cream cone and got involved in a 50 car pileup and broke both legs and your goldfish died.
