  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Second-gen Genesis Reliability - better info

Our reliability stats for the second-gen Genesis now cover the year ending June 30, 2015. (Others are over a year behind, and so have nothing yet on this car.) Repair trips per 100 cars:

2015 Genesis: 22, low -- excellent start for an all-new luxury car

We've updated our reliability stats for the Genesis to include owner experiences through September 30, 2015.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2015 Genesis: 21, low

Very good for a premium vehicle in its first model year.

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2015 Genesis: 91, < 1

In words, nine-tenths have required no repairs in the past year.

We'll have further updates in February and in May. The more owners participate, the more comprehensive and precise these will be.

This will probably be a nice tool someday but as I read it currently, there are something like 23 responses on mechanical problems? For a car that has sold 20k+ units there is no statistical significance to the numbers yet.

As you understand it, how is statistical significance calculated?

Though larger sample sizes are always better, the stats we have for the 2015 Genesis are based on more than enough cars to provide a usefully precise measure of the overall repair frequency.

They're not accurate within a few repair trips per hundred, but there's no real need for them to be.

I think the 2016s recently reached dealer lots. I'd been requesting a 2016 to review, and got one (nearly fresh off the truck) 11/2-11/9. Wonderful car, especially for the price.

Well, given the number of cars sold you need 400 respondents to achieve even a modest +/- 5% error rate. Increase your error tolerance to 3% and now you need 1,000 respondents. We also don't know how long all the cars have been in service, are these all fresh and 30 days off the lot, or are the one year old cars showing up, and what are the percentages of each.

Again great effort, but not enough data yet to be of statistical significance.

It sounds like you're using a formula intended for use with small populations. When a population is large, the population size simply isn't part of the calculation.

To my knowledge, there's never been a car reliability survey with a minimum sample size of 400. CR's is 100. JD Power in the past aimed for 225. (I don't know their current minimum.) CR then reports on 15 or so separate problem areas, which requires a much larger sample size than the overall repair frequency. JD Power drills down to specific problems out of a couple hundred possibilities. To accurately report on a problem that affects a few percent of cars, how large should the sample size be?

On the confidence interval, do you think someone should make a car purchasing decision based on whether the repair frequency is 30 repairs per 100 cars or 33 repairs per 100 cars? As I see it, this isn't a meaningful difference, just one additional repair per 33 cars.

I have 13K on my Gen 2' live in Tampa Fl area and have not had ant flats potting issues with tires at 33psi cold....love the car and won't risk swapping the tires for what might be a stiffer ride with the Michelins.....Hope this is useful.

Michael one thing which might complicate matters is Hyundai now has two manufacturing locations for the Genesis. They used to be made exclusively at Hyundai's Ulsan plant. Now they are making some of them at the Asan plant. This may or may not have an impact on model quality.

Odd, as I wouldn't think this would make sense given the low production volume. Any idea why they've split production between two plants?

Most likely it won't have a significant impact on reliability.
