  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Seeking advice: Looking at buying a low miles 2009 v8

I have a 2015 v8, and am happy with it.

Someone is selling a 2009 with less than 40K miles, and I am wondering what is the collective wisdom and inputs from this forum members wrt issues/opportunities with this model? What should I watch out for?

Thanks

09-14 honestly ,they are pretty solid not really problem vehicles.

Some early 2009 v8 engines have had bad valve springs which cause engine damage. I would go with late 2010 or 2011 v8.

How do i check for that?
At this time, i made a commit to the seller; and am picking it up tomorrow.
How do i determine if this is early 2009 v8, or a later one?
Thanks

check build date on VIN plate. Early in the model year would be 2008 to Jan or Feb 2009.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
The 2009 4.6 v8 was a wonder car, as far as advice, the engine should idle at a steady 650rpm, silent, should have 0 knocks, or any type of clicking.
The engine should be considerably quieter than your 2015 v8, with the engine bay open while listening intently, even though it ideals 150rpm higher (less valve clatter, due to being MPI vs GDI).
Good luck with your purchase.

Thank you for all your collective advice and wisdom. I picked up the car. It is low mileage. Everything works. APRIL 2009 Build. The only thing not working is the Steering wheel control, moving in any direction, or telescoping. Not sure if it is the switch, or there is a blown fuse. Will need to look at it later.
Also, noted that audio does not work over Bluetooth, only phone calls do.
Thanks again.

The switch for tilt etc in the steering column is most likely the problem. It is a known issue with the early first gen Genesis.

Correct. There is no streaming audio in that vehicle.

A rare.find, With such low miles,, Congrats,

However, I hope you checked the car fax details to make sure this reading is accurate and has not been tampered with?

Thanks daviderle...your advice on listening to the engine with hood open and comparing to my 2015 was very helpful, and you were absolutely on the money. Also, thanks to the advice from "homeofstone" on looking at the build date to avoid early model year cars.

Yes, I did pull a CarFax before deciding to go and see the car; and spent time looking at the documentation when i got there (after a long test drive by me, and my buddy along).

Until the last owner who bought in Dec 2018 (i have her purchase receipts where she bought from, a used car dealer in Hayward CA that has focus on higher end cars), history is verifiable and fine (based on Car Fax chronological history, and actual documentation in the car) until the seller who is the 3rd owner bought the car very recently; the 2nd owner was an older Asian gentleman from HongKong who lived in both places and used International Driver Licenses, that i found in the glovebox).
The person i bought from, the 3rd owner, she seemed genuine, found her via NextDoor, works at a hospital...but one can never know about what transpired in the last 4 months since she bought; only time will tell. Asked her in multiple ways why she is selling, and not sure I got the truth (but she did not change her story)....but before i bought it, i did my best to check the car out, long test drive, under the hood, under the car, etc (took a friend along to have two sets of eyes on things).

Tires have good tread, seem still original (Dunlops); but interestingly are labeled "M+S", so may have been changed, not sure? So far so good; put ~150 miles on it yesterday; I miss my 2015 features of blind spot detection, and Adaptive Cruise (wish there were aftermarket options). BTW, the ride is much more stiffer and rougher than the 2015; but online threads indicate that that is expected.

Will keep my fingers crossed.

Next stop is to register it tomorrow; then get Oil/Filter change to Synthetic (current sticker shows from JiffyLube and says next change due at 17000 miles; i am not a fan of Jiffylube). Also, perhaps change other filters and fluids. One area i could use your guys advice on is if I should do the first set of changes at a Hyundai Dealer/Service Center, or just buy the parts (any pointers to online resources for OEM genuine parts and part#s will be much appreciated), and get a local well respected mechanic to do the needful?

BTW, love this forum....awesome group wisdom, and support! THANKS

Those are the original tires and are terrible. We got them off our car asap when we purchased a new 2011 back in 2010. The car will ride much better with a quality tire. Kumho makes a great grand touring tire that is reasonable in price. Check tirerack.com for ratings etc.

Wonderful rickkapur, the first owner may not count in my book, it looks like they only had 30 miles.
I am there with you as far lane keep and Collition warning, as I stoped driving the SUV until I added this little mirror that passively added these two features, among host of other features:

nice congrats. how much did you score that car for with only 14k miles?

Curious, what would have been a fair value, from your experience?

When I looked up KBB, the value for what I got was about $13K-$14K; but there are/were not car choices with such low miles on it. Thus, I paid $15K, and am happy with the car. Nonetheless, I am curious of what others have paid in recent times for 2009/2010 v8s with low miles (less than say 50K mile).

Thanks

I just recently purchased a 2011 genesis 4.6 with 16k miles on it. Dealer asked for $16k. Managed to buy it for a little less than $15k.

I too was thinking if 15k was a lot of money for the car. But, it is a very low mileage. It looks, feels, and drives like new. Though I am sure I could have bought it for even less $$$, I do believe that I got "more" than what I paid for.

Congratulations on your recent purchase. It is a great deal
