That makes sense, I remember paying ~$400 a year for a 1977 Datsun 200SX in 1980 and STILL charging me out of state tuition Double burn. Couldn't get out of there fast enough.

IIRC, in TX you should only pay sales tax OR property tax on something. I think that was the reason behind Dallas dropping the property tax scheme on leases.

I bought an airplane as an individual and only had to pay sales tax. If a business had bought it, property taxes would have been assessed every year. Leases are a somewhat gray area, but there's a "sales tax" line in the contract.

I was just pointing out that i live in NY state and I don't pay that tax yearly. I have never heard of it. Just sales tax up front on the purchase.

Many folks are not aware that some states/counties tax vehicles every year, just like property taxes on houses and land. Yes, it's an annual property tax on vehicles. In Virginia the vehicle property tax hits home RENTERS too, which I like, because they would otherwise escape this form of revenue raising. The vehicle property tax decreases each year to reflect the depreciating value of your car.

I don't get too upset about this tax on my vehicles here in Virginia because the total of the property taxes on my two cars and my house is still dramatically less than my house property taxes alone in NJ where there is no vehicle property tax.

Taxes on "property" means, no property ownership at all. It means it is licensed like software.. Revocable possession, and owned by .gov tyrants, allowed to your possession of they say so and you pay them mandated tribute of what they determine. Probably because most people in NYC don't own a car, and even wealthy people in NYC may only own one car (registered in that state). The cost of renting a parking spot for a car in NYC is usually more than car payments.

The cost of real estate is so expensive in NYC, that the property taxes on that (and state income tax) more than make up for no property tax on cars.
