  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Shot to the gut - car tax

Yes, even Jefferson was a bit nutty when it came to the subject of taxation.

"I approved from the first moment of... the power of taxation [in the new Constitution]. I thought at first that [it] might have been limited. A little reflection soon convinced me it ought not to be." --Thomas Jefferson to Francis Hopkinson, 1789. ME 7:300

I don't think anyone on this forum is qualified to call Jefferson nutty. Jefferson seems to be referring to whether a federal tax was allowed by the US Constitution. It seemed to be not clear to many people, as there were various Supreme Court rulings over the years that affirmed the right to tax income at the federal level, and also other rulings from the court that struck down that right.

It was finally settled by the 16th Amendment to the US Constitution (ratified in 1913) which specifically granted the federal government the right to tax income, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

The Commonwealth of Virginia welcomes you. Now, please pay your damn taxes!

To clarify things: Virginia welcomes you with:

1. State income tax

2. County real estate tax - or real property tax, if you will.

3. County personal property tax on cars.

Many states, however, rank much higher in total taxes.

Lastly, the money is spent as though it were monopoly money. I won't go into details on that - too much.

Probably because a large number of federal bureaucrats live in VA.

They need the money to pay their big salary's and pension plans :D

Taxes that are on real property (not on voluntary interstate or international commerce), mean we are slaves.. Just the cold hard facts for some of the tax apologist, and anti rebel and founding father snarks in here. The past leaders and those million other "founding fathers" who supported liberty never supported forced taxing on "income" or property. Snarks over the decades who sought to enslave and steal for "the good of the people/collective/masses" through illicit taxes on real property, managed to lie and get into power in order to "reeducate" the generations of lemmings.. so that even the lemmings would themselves vote in taxes on property in order to fund the ever growing tyranny.

And the "income tax" amendment is charade of tyranny to begin with.. It is not on "income", but instead it is a tax on a trade of value of one thing for a service provided by another. How is hard work of a "salary man" or hourly worker, traded for compensation "income"? It literally is not income. It is a trade of good/service (labor) for something else. That is no gain of "income" or profit per say. It is a trade for use of ones property (oneself as a free man) for something equal value back.

Just for the record... I opt into this system of tyranny where we no longer own any property, but instead have revocable license to property and trade. That this property or trade is always deemed taxable by those with the armed forces (local, state, federal) that enforce such tyranny. Therefore, I and millions of others obey its rules while in this plantation system. However, we can educate ourselves to the plight we are in.

From time to time those, like who placed this post, groan under the burden of a plantation gone "too far" in their mind taking more than the plantation should. And many times these people are attacked by snarks who really are the slaves in the field brown shirts who bully those groaning that they are wrong, should shut up, and take whatever is extorted from those in the field.

If one becomes a good enough brown shirt, they might earn the ability to be called into the plantation house (which runs the collectives) for a nicer life and become the house slave. This house slave will do the close bidding of the taskmasters, many times as a evil enforcement arm against the "masses" in the "collective" fields.

"You are a slave Neo".

I applaud red dog for making this post. It is not out of bounds o groan about something excessive in ones mind relating to the Genesis. In this case, a good study to understand that we do not own property. If you do not obey their rules on fees, they will confiscate what you acquired through hard personal work.

Hard reading. Interesting that some folks think they are oppressed and live on plantations, yet drive luxury autos.

During the 1796 Presidential election campaign, John Adam's Federalist party referred to Jefferson this way:

"Federalists denounced Jefferson as a Jacobin, an Atheist, a demagogue, a coward, a traitor, and his supporters as “cut-throats who walk in rags and sleep amid filth and vermin.”

John Adams won the election.

More than half of the county taxes go for schools, and there are two reasons.

1. Immigrants are putting an enormous load on the school systems - this doesn't get publicized - not politically correct.

2. People around here want the schools to provide a social life for the kids: this means dance lessons, big swimming pools, archery classes, the whole nine yards.

God Bless Texas!!
TX has pretty high property taxes to fund schools that somewhat makes up for the lack of a state income tax. The high property taxes are mostly to fund schools in areas of the state with a lot of illegal immigrants (and recently legal immigrants) who don't have a sufficient tax base in their own counties (as a result of Federal Court orders to share property tax revenue state wide for schools).

Adams' supporters also accused Jefferson of being the son of a half-breed Indian squaw and a mulatto father.

Jefferson's supporters accused Adams of being a hermaphrodite with "neither the force and firmness of a man, nor the gentleness and sensibility of a woman."

I am not sure what any of this has to do with property taxes on vehicles.

Florida has no income tax, BUT:

I inherited a beautiful 2000 ft2 condo in Punta Gorda, 2 years ago. Place looked like a movie set.

Last year (2014 tax year), the prop. taxes doubled from $2500 to $5000. One of the main reasons I sold it. And, would you believe it? Some people bragged about the increase - thought they were richer because of it, I suppose.

Slavery of comfort and convenience is a wonderful thing...

I don't really mind the County taxes, I'm from NJ originally and I know if my house was transplanted up to middlesex county my tax bill would probably be 8k-10k a yr

I mind the taxes of course but it could be Way worse, hell I think Cali is worse than NJ

So i just group the county taxes in with my real estate taxes makes my yearly Va jail rape about 4.1-4.3k

My county is very rural so i know they need the money, Now if I was up near DC or in richmond I would still have NY plates as it's way easier to get away with in the larger areas (yup I paid the extra 3-400 in insurance to avoid county taxes, the sweet NY license thing were simple moving violations aren't placed on your record, draconian window tint laws and the damn 2 center windshield stickers)

Minute we ever move to a more populous county in Va, the cars get registered in FL

It CT everything is taxed . Try this, if you live in the very affluent town of Greenwich, CT the property tax on your car might be $500.00 for tax year 2015. If you live in the city of Bridgeport, CT [where the word affluent isn't used very often] the tax on the exact same car for tax year 2015 is likely $2,500.00 or more .
The property tax on anything in a 'city' is pounded but if you live in a 'town' like Greenwich - boy do things change. In CT it's all about your areas *MIL rate.
Slap 'Early American' plates on your $1,000,000 Hemi Barracuda (vehicle must be 25 years old or older to qualify for the EA plates) and you'll be taxed at an appraised value not to exceed $500.00 - regardless of what the vehicle is worth. Needless to say there are tons of very valuable collector cars in CT  Had I not sold my old 1965 427 CSX Cobra years ago I would get a property tax bill of about $140.00 a year where I live based on my 27.9 MIL rate. Tax wise a 2015 Genesis is far more valuable to the tax man than a '65 Shelby 427 Cobra. Talk about bragging rights .

*A mill is equal to $1.00 of tax for each $1,000 of assessment.

Don't count on moving to the Richmond area and not registering your car locally. The DMV gets plenty of tip-off phone calls from neighbors turning in year-'round residents who fail to register their vehicles.
