Mine has that pad, but stuff still slides out.
Since you were correcting grammar, let me correct yours too. You ended your sentence with the preposition "for". Bad grammar. (Noted here all in good fun)."The consensus is that it is a useless slot which serves no real purpose. What did Hyundai put it there for?"
The 2 post out of the 10 prior to nb_mike's which note that the slot was "useless" is far from a consensus. Then again, we now regularly allow vocal minorities to dictate our lives, so perhaps 20% agreement is a consensus by today's standards?
[Sorry...I was in a grammatical/statistical mood today. For those who may be offended by corrections made to poor grammar and statistical analysis, please accept my humble apologies.]

Back on topic: the slot works perfectly for my iphone as I don't like it in my pocket while driving. In my prior car, I would put my phone in the cup holder. Now it has its own slot, so I really like this small feature of the car.
+1 - this is the sort of writing up with which we must not put.Since you were correcting grammar, let me correct yours too. You ended your sentence with the preposition "for". Bad grammar. (Noted here all in good fun).

Duh, because you can't text if the phone is in your pocket.
