  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Smart Cruise control

Don't know why all the bad mouthing of the Prius. When I'm on one of my trips, going around 75mph, I've often had a Prius (2nd Generation with the smaller engine) pass me. Say what you want about them. They can go plenty fast enough.

Also, my best buddy in Roswell has a 2009 (2nd Generation) Prius. The ride (suspension) is the same as my Genesis, stiffer than my Continental, and we took a trip up to Clines Corners and back, and yes, the car will hold at least 90 mph all day on US-285.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Bob,

Please don't take my comments as bashing the Prius. I've been very happy with my 2nd generation Prius. The pickup is fine and I can cruise at 80 without a problem and get 48 miles to a gallon. The handling is fine (providing you change the OEM tires) and the car is good in snow in New England providing you have a good pair of snow tires like Blizzaks.

There is much outside noise above 50 mph and the car is not the most comfortable on long trips due to outside noise and suspension. Technology and user interface are great and reliability at 135,000 has also been very good. I will give the car to my daughter next year and want something a bit more comfortable like the Genesis.

I have read all postings concerning the SCC.

I drive 50-60K miles per year on I-10 from Houston to MS and Hwy 90 in South La. These roads are congested but move a consistent speeds at the posted limit or slightly above. I have been doing this for over 20 years and have never had an incidient:)!

My concerns are as follows- When driving on 3-5 lane freeways, it appears that the SCC detects cars left and right as well as ahead of me and slows down- CREATING a traffic hazard as no one else has slowed!

Also, the SCC doesnt appear to be smart enough to know when the yahoo weaving in and around you cuts you off but is going faster than you thereby eliminating a hazard ONCE PASSED! It dang near stops you creating a hazard for the car following!

The other issue is that with dips in the road, the SCC will slow.

I do understand that it takes time to learn the nuances of a new system but there are situations where the SCC is hazardous in driving. Open road, its great!

I understand that you can set 1 of 3 distances but is there a way to use CC without the SCC portion? I have read the manual and there doesnt appear to be a way to disable the "radar" portion and just set it to a speed.

Couple points.

1)I have NEVER had my SCC detect a car that wasn't in my lane, even in Chicago traffic.

2)I do not believe there is a way to engage 'dumb' CC.

At the risk of being accused of old-fogey-dom, my solution has always been not to use cruise control at all. Never have, never will...

I've had much better results with my SCC. For example, if someone cuts in front of me but is going faster, my car doesn't slow noticeably, and I haven't seen it respond to cars in adjacent lanes. I have noticed glitches on hilly roads or tight curves, but overall it's been great.

I agree with Waveman, I have not notice my car slow down when there is vehciles beside me when SCC is engaged.

I have to agree about the uselessness of cruise control in general, EXCEPT to use for short breaks on the Interstate to give the right foot a rest.

I've ranted about this to the point of annoyance, I'm sure, but I just don't get it. If you're paying attention, the best cruise control is your right foot. And if you're not, then you shouldn't be driving.

My view of technology in general is that just because something is possible doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea. I'm also not a fan of cell phones, except for emergencies. I treasure my privacy and don't want to be reachable 24/7. If you need to contact me, leave me a voicemail or send me an email. If I'm interested I'll get back to you.

I had something new happen this morning. I was cruising through the country with the cruise control engaged and no car symbol was shown on the display. Ahead of me and out of range a car was turning. The car was still in my lane going 10-15 when the Genesis locked on to it, firmly brakes and for the first time ever beeped a warning. The car was turning and clearing the lane but I suppose the beep is the car's way of saying "wake up dummy and swerve?"

The car is the only time that I can find in my busy schedule to watch movies. Smart cruise control is essential.

I thought the trans had to be in Park in order for DVDs to play. Sounds like you found a way to defeat that feature - congrats (or something...). Where do you plug in the corn popper?? Did you find a USB version, or do you plug an inverter into the cig lighter?

It's a feature of the '12 4.6. They tried to call you about it but your phone was off.
:p

Smart Cruise control is sweet when you are on highway, why remove it?

When it can't navigate simple curves while maintaining speed.

Have dealer check alignment of radar units on front of car. Kind of like alignment of headlights.

Mine has never been tricked by guardrails, parked vehicles or road signs on everything from Interstates to windy mountain roads. I'd have to agree that something is not aligned properly. The only time mine has made a mistake is on the Interstate and there is a tractor trailer ahead in an adjoining lane which it sometimes locks onto.

All,

From some of the replies, it seems as though many of us have never used cruise control. "do you want to run into the car in front?" No, I dont want to run into the car in front AND I never have in 30+ years of driving and using normal cruise control. You keep an eye on the front sides and rear. You go around or tap your brakes and slow down. The key is YOU control it!

I spoke with engineers at the Hyundai plant in Montgomery. He said that there is no way to disable the smart portion. As we were ending our talk he said that he didn't like the comouter adjusted mileage either.
