If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Going to have a custom exhaust done today

Found a place that does custom work around the corner :D

Only took me 5 tries....but I found a custom exhaust fabricator

Going with a MagnaFlow Muffler

He may be working on a custom High Flow intake system as well

It's about time :)

Let you know how I make out

I have a fair amount of experience with Magnaflow exhaust on the Genesis. Basically, Magnaflows drone, and there is nothing one can do with Magnaflow mufflers to eliminate drone. I used the "X" pipe with the Magnaflow system, then converted the "X" pipe to a Magnaflow "X muffler" - no difference in drone. Rear muffler was a Magnaflow.

I really researched to subject of drone. Concluded that Corsa makes drone-free exhausts, but only for a limited number of cars and not the Genesis.

Researched the "active" muffler systems on Jaguar XKR and Corvette, which eliminate drone.

The only aftermarket mfg that has worked with an "active" muffler is Dynomax in their VT line. I read a lot of reviews on the web - all were positive respecting drone. Bought the Dynomax VTs and fitted them to my '11 4.6 which then had the Magnaflow. It is a tight fit and Dynomax does not offer a variety of inlet/outlet configurations. Was very happy with the install. Drone was virtually eliminated. Power and sound was there when I wanted it. It was OEM quiet at gentle cruise.

I'm interested in the Dynamax VT for
MyR-Spec

Oops. Stupid fingers:( Do you have thoughts about 2012 bumper outlets and a Dynamax installation?

I would research Borla. Ive been very happy with the system on my 4.6
don't know if they have a system for the r-spec yet but im sure they are working on it they seem a pretty competent group.

my borla system utilizes dual pipe (2.25) with a connection behind the 2nd cats. the smaller pipe help to retain heat to propel gasses and to minimize unwanted rasp and quiets the drone in the cabin.

For example: if you went with dual 3" pipe and some flow masters you would get a relative sound like the old 60-70 muscle car sound with that hollow rasp all the low end rumble etc etc to minimize the rasp and drone use smaller pipe,

as far as the exits go I like a quad tip on the Genesis.

i am going to go with the x-pipe and cutouts so it will be stock sound most the time but when i want to open them up it will sound bad a$$

Well, things went pretty smooth.....

But now I see that Borla has the 5.0 R Spec listed for a full CatBack System on their website. But when you go to buy it - it still says you are purchasing the one for the 4.6 - and it shows the same quad exhaust layout for the 4.6

Which I prefer actually :D

But that begs the question...........

Is the stock exhaust on the 4.6 the same as the 5.0 ?
The cat deletes from MSA are the same for the 4.6 as for the 5.0 -

So what gives ?

I'm gonna call Borla on Mondy and get an answer
If I can get the quad catback from Borla - I'm doing it

Only thing that bugs me -

Shouldn't a new exhaust be made for the 5.0 ?
Why would Borla sell the 4.6 exhaust to a 5.0 owner ?

What does it do....... it terms of performance - if anything - if I put an exhaust on my car that was engineered for the 4.6
Wouldn't I get more power gains from a newly fabricated / engineered exhaust for the 5.0 ?

As for MagnaFlow.......the drone could be an issue - so I don't think I'm going there.

I like the deep MagnaFlow sound - but the drone might cause my wife to slap me while going from 1st to 2nd-

Unless the drone is from 1st to 2nd.......and into 3rd - in which case I will end up with a black eye as well .....lol

Dragon: Who cares what engine the borla was made for? If it fits, and doesn't restrict flow like the stock, then it will give you right around 20 more HP to the wheels.

Magnaflow has a much raspier sound and a much more "V6" sound than the borla...which sounds like a lifted ass truck with a giant V8 stuffed under the hood. I have never liked magnaflow because they do nothing for sound and very poor performance gains.

A good friend of mine in the car business just told me the exact same thing

Hopefully the Borla 4.6 does fit - and I'm sure it will ;)

Other than having a body shop do some minor cosmetic work to the rear bumper to fit the exhaust - all is right with the world

I look forward to an awesome sounding exhaust and some nice power gains.

My goal is to have at least 460hp- 470hp to the crank when all is said and done. :)

Well, you can achieve that by running 100 octane after the exhaust hahahaha. But seriously, I am down to two exhaust choices. Borla, or cut-outs ha

Spoke with Greg from Borla

He said to give him a call in a month

The CatBack system should be ready ( No promises )

But to call him to check on the status

Hopefully before the end of summer :)

On Dynomax VT fitment: I did fit these to my '11 4.6. It was a bit tricky in that we had to cant the mufflers from horizontal a bit to fit. This resulted in the mufflers being visible from certain angles, but some flat black paint made them virtually unnoticed. It was also difficult to position the exhaust port exactly at the center of the bumper cutouts. We "fixed" this by using larger chrome exhaust tip. I really liked the end result. It was alternately quiet and loud when I wanted it. I sold the car to a very good friend, offering to return it to stock. He's my age and a true Geezer, but so far enjoys the sound and has not asked me to return to stock.

As for the 2012, one of our members (Skywagon I think) attempted to fit the Dynomax VT mufflers, and gave up thinking it to be too difficult. Nevertheless, I think it can be done. What I would do is to build a new exhaust from the central resonator backwards. The OEM muffler has its intake in the interior corner, which makes it a bit difficult to match an aftermarket muffler. Again, I think the big problem will be mating the rear exhaust of the muffler to the Hyundai bumper ports. Not sure I would spend a lot of time/money trying to match the Hyundai ports. Perhaps, I would just exhaust vis-a-vie a ninety degree bend to the street, leaving the Hyundai ports as "dummies" that soot no more. I remain ambivalent as I plan to trade my RSpec for the new improved version in about a year or so.

I have looked into the Dynomax - and it is a nearly impossible fit -
as you mentioned :)

I am willing to wait till Borla comes out with the CatBack
But I too, will be trading in the Dragon for the new R Spec sedan in 2-3 years

Now that you mention it.......it might be better to hold off
And get the CatBack system for the 5.5 liter monster that is coming

You could easily get 500hp out of the next Genesis R Spec :grouphug:

And I plan to :D
