  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So, what can I expect for my iPhone?

Based on multiple postings here and elsewhere, it's clear that many Genesis owners are unhappy with the way that their cars integrate with the iPod and iPhone. I already know about some specific deficiencies (e.g., limited ability to randomize playback), but I haven't found a description of what I can expect for my iPhone 3GS.

My iPhone currently works quite well with a standalone Bluetooth device in my car. I dial calls by voice using the iPhone's software and use the device's mike and speaker. Will I get equivalent functionality in the Genesis?

For music, I plug an old iPod into an FM transmitter, which plays through the car's stereo. Downsides are poor audio quality and having to control all playback using the iPod's buttons. Is Hyundai's iPod cable the best way to get music from the device into the car's audio system?

My opinion is yes, and yes.
Bluetooth calls and calling work well on the iPhone/Genesis, though some complain about the phone book not downloading properly/completely. Call quality is great though, most people have no idea I'm handsfree.

As for the iPod integration, you've already seen the complaints. I don't share those, as I don't shuffle playlists (but that works for me anyway). Shuffling songs works fine too.

For the record, I'm talking Tech package only, can't speak to the rest.

Bottom line: make it part of your test drive and see for yourself.

Thanks.

I was going to do that on my last test drive, but I could tell that the guy who came with me wouldn't be able to answer detailed questions, since he wasn't able to do some basic functions on the nav. Next time around I'll just try playing around with the system myself.

Using a 3GS, audio quality is great; +2 on folks not knowing it's through the car. I have too many contacts and so it's easier to use the handset for dialing by name, especially with frequents/recents. Dialing a known number with the shuttle is easier for me than using the handset.

Maybe the touchscreen streams iPod, but with the tech system, the cable is the only way to use an iPod--ask 'em to throw it in. The iPod integration is great coming from a '99 Volvo, but I gather it's not fabulous compared to some of the competition, and since my old iPod (Gen 1, I think), doesn't work in the car at all, I've loaded a bunch of stuff onto a USB stick which is always at the ready. The system dial gives easy navigation through folders and subfolders. I drove a rented Santa Fe for several days last week and was impressed with the BT music streaming--too bad it's not on the '11 Genesis.

I've not had much luck with the voice dialing, others have noted that it's at its worst at speed and that's where I've tried it.
