Hey everyone, I own a 2018 Genesis G80 that i gave for it 7.5K service maintenance this Thursday evening. I had some battery issues for which they said they would like to keep it overnight. A rental would be provided. Great, that worked for me but as i head to out of town I informed them that i will pick it up on Monday (big mistake). I keep the Geo-Fence on for my car as it came with the free 3 three paid service. This is where is gets interesting. All over the weekend, my phone has been pinging me locations miles away from the dealership.

It started Friday evening.
  • We received a Geo-Fence boundary notification from your 2018 GENESIS G80 on 03/02/2018 at 04:38 pm EST. Near: 2381 John Glenn Dr, Atlanta, GA 30341, USA (This is the dealership address)
  • on 03/02/2018 at 06:41 pm EST. Near: 3073 Panthersville Rd, Decatur, GA 30034, USA (18.4 miles away from the dealership)
  • on 03/02/2018 at 10:13 pm EST. Near: 122-140 Heritage Way, Covington, GA 30016, USA (25 miles from the previous place, at 10 PM, the dealership closes at 7)
  • 03/03/2018 at 06:51 am EST. Near: 122-140 Heritage Way, Covington, GA 30016, USA (next day morning, looks like the car was kept overnight, also this is a residential address)
  • on 03/03/2018 at 07:26 am EST. Near: 6734-6758 Dawson Blvd, Norcross, GA 30093, USA (37 miles away from the previous place, some random mall outlet)
  • 03/03/2018 at 02:38 pm EST. Near: 122-140 Heritage Way, Covington, GA 30016, USA (37 miles again)
  • 03/04/2018 at 11:03 am EST. Near: 122-140 Heritage Way, Covington, GA 30016, USA (Car was kept again overnight)
  • 03/04/2018 at 11:14 am EST. Near: 4230 Salem Rd, Covington, GA 30016, USA (Gas station, assuming to fill up my tank since he used my gas)

Looks like there as been more then 100 miles of driving, and all over the place. This really angers me as i didnt keep my car there so it could be used by someone else for their personal joyride.
I am going to be disccusing this with regional gensis office tomorrow. Would apprecaite any help as to what should be my next step?

Did they need to drive the car around to test the battery issues? Maybe gave it to a tech to see if they could reproduce the problem during off hours.

I could understand maybe driving it back and forth and i could be wrong, but it looks like it was used more to commute to places. There are multiple more trips that i have not added to the list, along with a couple of speed alerts for speed exceeding 75+. The dealership was open on Saturday but the car was no way around it that whole day. Ever since its left on Friday night, its been with whoever is driving it.

I am in no way trying to justify what has happened, however, if a tech takes the car home to try and reproduce the problem that is not evident in the shop, he has to leave his car at the shop and thus only has your car to drive. Additionally, he may not have encountered the problem, so kept driving it.

But I do understand your concern, and I would probably avoid going to a dealer unless I could reproduce the problem. That can be tough with intermittent electrical problems. You might see if you can find others who have had similar problems on this forum, and what the resolution was.

I would think your next step is to confront the dealer with all these facts and see what his explanation is. We will all be waiting to hear on Monday how he can possibly explain it. No explanation is not acceptable and make them pay for the gas. Also they must recorded the odometer reading so the difference in mileage should be indisputable.

Update yet @Shawn_Dlima ?

Morning everyone,

I confronted the dealership, and was told that they had to record data for the battery issue. So it was plugged in with a computer. However i do believe he was lying for two reasons (I could be wrong, but just have a gut feeling). He told me the car was there on Saturday when he was at the dealership but the car never pinged me from anywhere near the dealership. When i had called them on Saturday, i was advised my SA was off that day. Have spoken with Regional and they said to give them a few days while they look in to it. Would you'll consider it normal for someone to drive about a 150 miles to find a problem?

I'd be ticked-off too. Hyundai dealers, this is yet another reason why Genesis USA wants to cut you off from selling the Genesis brand. Take notes.

So if it was me I would have driven to that dealership first thing Saturday and asked them to show me my car. If they said a tech had it I would have told them to call that tech right then and there and tell him to bring your car back to the dealership.

If not I would go looking for him since you had an address. Sorry this whole thing is unacceptable.

If the tech was off and still had your car, you can sue. One, he isn't covered on your insurance. Two, you didn't give him permission to drive it during "non-working" hours.

I'm fuming because I am putting myself in your situation and I would close that dealership down with what I can sue them for. Man, I need a beer

Would have been fun to just take the car back. I bet someone would have been very embarrassed.

That would have been funny. You could call the dealership the next day and say where is my car and watch them panic? Can you be arrested for stealing back your own car?

I'm with BlancaGenny. I'd make it legally awkward on them. Ask them for a written explanation and copy the State Attny General

Blanca - Don't all dealerships have their own Comp and Collision for taking cars out to check for issues? How else would they be able to road test something? They've never asked me to add them to any of my insurance policies over the years.

The unprofessional joyride, if it is what it seems, should be handled by the dealership, of course. Just not sure we should be making a federal case out of it. Shawn - either the geofencing is reliable or it's not. If it is, it sounds awesome and the dealership is almost certainly caught red-handed and you should probably want to have them pay for mileage and some kind of other freebie (don't just come out 'even'). If it's not, then is this possibly much ado about nothing?

Sounds like a joyride to me.. A battery issue is something that can be bench-tested within a few minutes and does not require an indepth road test. The tech decided to keep your car for the weekend to run his errands. Sounds pretty shitty to me.

Hello, I just purchased a so-called 2015 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 Ultimate from Jim Ellis Hyundai. They placed some cheap tires on the vehicle, atlas tires (never heard of the brand). The tires are flat spotted. After calling Hyundai Corp (they were no help) and posting a negativity review, they are supposedly looking for some Michelin tires off another vehicle. That dealership sucks. I traded in a Lexus GS 350F Sport. There is no comparison in the customer service between Lexus and Hyundai/Genesis. Genesis HAS TO PROVIDE EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE IN ORDER TO COMPETE AS A BRAND! If I could I would trade this vehicle right now. This is my third rodeo with the Genesis. I love the vehicle, but I hate dealing with unprofessional people at the dealerships and corporate. I think I will trade for a Cadillac CT6 or CTS later this year.

Yes, it does sound like the dealership sucks. Atlas tire has been around for many years but I have no idea how good they are. Dealers tend to use lower cost items for used care replacements. Some tire do get flat spotting and someone mentioned that nylon belts are more prone to it.

While I agree that Hyundai needs a good dealer experience to be a real luxury brand for Genesis, they really have no control over what the dealer does about the tires. Best they can do it call and tell them "play nice"

Hope you get the Michelins.

To check for issues within business hours, of course. To keep overnight at a privately owned house, no. There is legal action to be taken here if you press on with it only if you think it's necessary. If there weren't any damages to the car, you still have proof that the tech took the car to his HOUSE. Whether it is the dealership that fires the guy or a service manager that allowed him to take it home, it's at least being taken care of. Going untouched will allow this kind of action to be taken with other customer's cars and it'll keep happening. Do what you feel you need to do, it's ultimately your decision. Me, I would make sure the service manager or tech got some kind of adminstrative action so they know they aren't invisible.

**sorry for the late response, didn't see you responded until today.
