  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

2015, 5.0 CPO, 30k miles (as of yesterday).

Currently waiting for a flatbed at my place.

Drove about 50 miles today, stopped to get gas about 8 miles from home, made the drive, backed into my parking space and put the vehicle in park. Engine started idling rough. And I mean rough...like a top fuel dragster rough. The CEL came on. I gave it a little extra RPM to see if it would smooth out (I'm an old schooler who has owned quite a few carburator vehicles in the past). CEL light went off and then I noticed the smell. It wasn't anything I recognized, very chemical in nature, almost like what a car smells like that has been running in a closed garage. I got out while it was running and there was white smoke coming from the driver's side exhaust. I shut it down and waited a minute. Tried to start it and it just cranks and won't catch.

No, I didn't put diesel in it - 87 pump octane from Speedway. Never had a problem with that before. I also drive pretty normal, no racing or anything.

Extra: I hooked an OBD scanner up to it for fun about 6 weeks ago and got U0109 as a stored code "lost communication with fuel pump module A". Asked the local dealer about it, they said it was probably nothing.

Any ideas?

white smoke can mean a few things. from a fuel pump to a blown head gasket.

fuel injection pump timing issue - which by your code seems to be the issue.

you have a fuel pump in the fuel tank, but you also have a high pressure injector pump/regulator under the hood for the direct injection, that pumps the fuel to the injectors, and it sounds like this is the unit that is having an issue.

looks to be a $300-$400 part, with labor probably looking at $600-$700 ball park. should be covered under the 5/60 or 10/100

Thanks guys.

Vehicle is still under factory warranty which I was told by my service advisor was still in effect for "about a year". Do you think this would not be covered?

I'm only one guy, lol, just posted twice.

I edited my post above, yes I believe it should be covered it's part of the power-train, and I don't see an exclusion for it in the warranty paperwork on my G80.. doubt there is one on older cars.

Haha I noticed that too late. Thanks, man. I hope that's the problem.

Would that explain the white smoke? I've seen a garage fill up with exhaust a few times in the past, this smelled and looked like that kind of smoke. The vehicle was outside. I always related white smoke to coolant getting past the head gasket or worse a cracked head.

Additionally, when cold, I noticed it kind of "chugged" when accelerating then evened out. Almost like an oscillation.

yeah white smoke happens with fuel related issues as well.

my first thought was a blown head gasket, which is quite possible as well. but I've never had a car not kick over with a blown head gasket, runs like hell and will over heat pretty fast, but should still start

The last time I blew a head gasket on a 1995 4Runner, I drove that thing 6 miles with blue/white smoke pouring out the pipe and it never died.. Ran like a champ and got me home, I shut it down at every red light and it restarted with no issue, just idled hard and chugged a lot of smoke.

and it's still running 340,000 miles later even after all my abuse..

I blew a head gasket on my 1970 Chevelle SS once but that was an easy fix as I had the tools and a garage. But that happened after I was pushing it pretty hard. Several hour straightforward fix once I had a replacement gasket. In any event, white and blue smoke just like you experienced. I've never really heard of a head gasket blowing under fairly benign conditions with this low of mileage. I guess anything's possible.

Could the timing chain (or belt) have broken?

well my mother had a 1994 Ford Taurus Wagon that blew the head gasket like clockwork every 35K miles or so.. and mom was 60 when she bought that POS in 1994, so you know she wasn't pushing it.. Heck if my mom ever drive over 50 (even on a highway) I would be surprised.. I think her record 0-60 time was like 4.5 days..

Are head gaskets or timing chains an issue with the 5.0 cars? I've seen nothing anywhere indicating that at all.

not that I know.. but the high pressure fuel pump seems to be an issue with several manufacturers. BMX, Lexus, Ford, Mini, Ford, all have recalls on them.. Since a lot of parts are shared from the same 3rd party manufacturers it wouldn't surprise me if Hyundai was in the same boat, a quick google shows issues with it on multiple models and motors from Hyundai.

Its 11 PM here. If you are in the east or central they can't do anything with it tonight anyway. What did they say whenyou called them back?

I’m in Florida. They are sending out a second flatbed. The first one was “handling police tow jobs”. The dealership is less than a mile away, I could have pushed it there. I can’t deal with it tomorrow and have rented a car for the day.

I would’ve call AAA, I’ve never used road side provided by the car manufacturer, now I know why.

They just picked it up. The tow driver got it to start. It's pouring smoke out the driver's side exhaust only, smells like raw unburned fuel. CEL was going off, too. It was idling in this pic.

You might have a cat blow out? Though white smoke is usually coolant if it has a sweet taste to it. Blue smoke, you're burning oil and black smoke is unburnt fuel. If it's only coming out one side, either the passenger side is clogged or the driver's side blew out and the exhaust is going through the path of least resistance. Would explain the unburnt fuel smell too...

Fun fact, I'm in Orlando right now for Microsoft Ignite.... it's a gong show here....

Used it twice. In once case it was 20 minutes, the other about an hour. Both were tire problems so no flatbed needed. In once case, it was the same truck AAA uses.
