  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I am a few months away from purchasing my first Genesis. I have seen several other genesis with black soot on the bumpers. Is the soot problem something that is only found on the GDI engines?
I rented a 2013 3.8 the other day and noticed that after about 300mi of driving that the exhaust was black and the bumper from the exhaust to the trunk lid was filthy. I am sure it didnt help that the car was white.

I liked the v6, but as I currently have a Camry XLE v6, I want to go to a v8 car with RWD. I love the idea of the 5.0 R-spec, but I am wondering if the soot problem exists on the R-spec as bad as it was on the 3.8.

I could care less about the soot in the air, but the soot on the bumper is something that would bother me. To be honest, I am lazy, therefore will likely not wash the car as much as many do here. I don't want to go a month without washing and find my bumper permanently damaged.

I noticed that the 4.6 is non GDI, however there is something about having a car that crosses that 400hp threshold that is very intriguing and making me lean toward the 5.0.

To summarize, do you R-spec owners have the soot problems seen on the 3.8's?
If so, should the soot issue be present on the non GDI 4.6 engine model?
Does anyone make a different bumper/exhaust that routes the soot farther away from the bumper?

Thank you in advance

Soot problems occur on any GDI engine. So the 5.0 (if it is GDI, which I think it is) will have soot. My 4.6 produces a clean 385hp :D.

BMW, Kia, and Hyundai have all had soot problems with their GDI engines...nothing uncommon.

The soot should just clean right off. I don't think it will bake into the paint or anything.

the soot that was on the 3.8L i rented the other day seemed almost oily. Of course it was raining when i tried to wipe it off and all it seemed to do was smear around.

I really want the 5.0, but i think keeping the machine clean will head me toward the 4.6.

Are there any major differences other than the engine hp/torque and soot from the 2012 genesis 4.6 and the 2012 or 2013 5.0 rspec?
I heard the nav screen is slightly larger on the 2013.

This is now my 2nd 4.6 Genesis
and i have never had one problem with soot. i would say if your going with the 3.8 or 5.0 go with a dark color instead of the white
